We all have heroes. Heroes can inspire us to be more than we are, to do more than we think we can do, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. The key is choosing the right hero. At the risk of sounding cliche, Jesus is the perfect choice for a hero. But “be like Him?” Be holy? It sounds impossible, outrageous, even presumptuous. Yet, His Word tells us to, “Be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). Yikes! It’s an incredible thought that’s challenging to grasp-and we’re going to teach this to kids?! Actually, childhood is the perfect time to be introduced to such a transformational concept, because kids believe. Kids believe that God is who He says He is - that He is perfect, good, powerful, and worthy of our worship. Kids believe that they can do what God says they can do. If God says He has a Big Plan for this world and He wants them tobe a part of it, then they say, “Sign me up!” If God says to live life like He would, they say, “Ok.” Sounds simple. Simple, yes, but not necessarily easy. To be holy means to be like Jesus, but that isn’t easy, right?! That’s the point. It’s impossible without Him. We need the Holy Spirit on the inside of us to teach, remind, and empower us to choose what Jesus would choose. As friends and followers of Jesus that’s exactly what we have - the Holy Spirit and power. We have Him. As kids begin to understand and embrace this truth, God’s light and power inside of them will begin to shine. They will actually give people a glimpse of Jesus!
