Large Group Instructions
Host and Co-Host enter, dressed in overalls. This Engage uses various clothing items, such as hats, pants, shirts, shoes, etc. Whichever items you choose, be sure that each item has a match. Separate the items into two piles, with each pile containing at least one of each item.
Host
Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I always have so much fun learning about Jesus with you. The more I discover about Jesus, the more I want to be just like Him.
Co-Host
Have you ever played dress up at home with your mommy or daddy’s clothes? Are their clothes teeny tiny or are they really big? (Pause) They’re big! Let’s play dress up at the Train Station.
Host
That will be fun! I’ll choose a Jr. Conductor to help us. (Co-Host) will choose something to wear from this pile of clothes. We’ll help our friend choose something that matches.
The Co-Host chooses an item from one of the piles of clothes. The Host and audience help the volunteer child look through his/her pile of clothing to find a match. Have the child put on that item. Repeat with as many items as time allows.
Co-Host
That was fun. Look at our friend; he/she looks like me.
Host
He/She does look like you. Today we will hear about someone important who it’s great to copy. We don’t have to wear the same things as Him, but we should definitely copy what He said and did. I can’t wait to share the Big Point, but first let’s hear a big, “Choo-choo!”
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
Did you see who took the Easter Eggs? (Pause) It was Roberta?! She is always trying to swipe things at the Train Station. Is that a wise choice to take what doesn’t belong to you? (Pause) No, it isn’t.
Host
I can understand why Engineer Courtney is upset, but do you think that she should be mean to Roberta? I don’t think that’s a good choice to copy. Let’s see what our Big Point says about who we should copy. Let’s sing it together,
Host
I Want To Be More Like Jesus!
Co-Host
Jesus is the best person to copy. Jesus did not go around being mean to people, even when people were mean to Jesus.
Host
Copying Jesus means that we do and say the kinds of things that Jesus said and did. Maybe it would help to play a copycat game.
Co-Host
Let’s choose some Jr. Conductors to play this game with us on stage. It’s fun to play games with our friends.
Bring 2 or 3 kids on stage as volunteers.
Host
In this game, our friend, (Co-Host), will walk across the stage with very silly motions. He/She might hop, walk zig zag, or even roll. Why, he/she might do all those things. Our job is to copy exactly how he/she walked. We have to do every movement that he/she did.
The Co-Host travels across the stage, mixing up 2 or 3 movements such as hopping, baby steps, slow walking, spinning, etc. Then the Host, along with one of the kids, tries to copy the Co-Host’s exact walk. Have the audience help the volunteers remember the steps. Allow each child to try the game at least once.
Co-Host
You did a good job copying me. I’m glad all of our friends were here to help. Our friends can help us copy Jesus by reminding us to do wise things.
Host
Becoming more like Jesus is wise because Jesus is holy and good. We can copy everything that Jesus said and did because Jesus’ way is always the wise way to speak and act. I’m glad that God gives us the power to be more like Jesus. Let’s see if Engineer Courtney’s friends help her follow the Big Point.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
I’m proud of Engineer Courtney. She decided to help Roberta instead of making fun of her for crying. Do you think that she made a wise choice?
Host
I do. Did Engineer Courtney follow the Big Point and act like Jesus? She did! Let’s say the Big Point again,
Host
I Want To Be More Like Jesus!
Co-Host
I like the verse that Farmer Faith shared from the Bible.
Co-Host
1 Peter 2:21 (NIrV) says, “He left you an example He expects you to follow.”
Host
An example is something you follow so you can do the same thing. Like drawing, how many of you love to draw? Can you tell me your favorite thing to draw with?
Allow the kids to answer.
Co-Host
Drawing is so fun! Let’s see if we can follow an example and draw a picture. I have a marker/chalk board and some markers/chalk. Let’s look at these pictures and try to copy them. These pictures will be our examples.
Show the slides. Each slide will show an additional step toward drawing the finished picture. Follow along with the simple steps. Engage the kids, asking them what is on the screen. Occasionally draw the wrong line or image and ask the kids if you followed the example correctly. Erase it and redraw the correct line. Finish the image and present to the kids.
Host
Does our picture look like the example on the screen? (Pause) It does. That’s because we followed the example. We become more like Jesus when we follow His example and think and act like He did.
Co-Host
Do we have pictures of Jesus to copy? (Pause) No? Then how do we copy Jesus?
Host
No, we don’t have pictures, but we do have the Bible. The Bible tells us lots of stories about the things that Jesus said and did. We can read those stories with our families and learn about Jesus.
Co-Host
Then we can copy what Jesus said and did! It’s a good idea to ask ourselves, “What would Jesus do if He were me?” Then we can make the wise choice to act and speak like Jesus. Another wise idea from the Bible is to worship Jesus.
Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. We can use our Big Verse to pray and chat with Jesus. Repeat this prayer after me. “Dear God, help me to follow Jesus’ example.” (Repeat 2x) Following Jesus’ example helps us to become more like Him. Let’s stand up and worship Him now.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
Even though Roberta made a rotten choice, Engineer Courtney made the right choice by helping her. She followed Jesus’ example.
Host
Other people will sometimes do unwise or hurtful things, even when you try to do the wise thing. Don’t ever let that stop you from following Jesus. Let’s all practice our Big Point again,
Host
I Want To Be More Like Jesus!
Co-Host
Jesus’ friends, the disciples, learned that they didn’t have to act like everyone else. We can all follow Jesus, no matter what everyone else chooses to do. I’m glad they learned our Big Point, too.
Host
You can tell your family about James and John and what they learned about Jesus when you do the Big Do this week.
Host
Find someone you can serve. You can serve your parents by helping around the house. You can serve your teacher by helping at school. You can even serve by holding the door open for someone else.
Co-Host
Let’s think of some ways to serve others and be more like Jesus this week.
Have the kids suggest ways to serve others, then have everyone act out that suggestion. You may want to offer the first suggestion to give the kids some ideas to start.
Host
Let’s say our Big Point once more,
Host
I Want To Be More Like Jesus!
Did our Big Point say I Want to Be Less Like Jesus or I Want To Be More Like Jesus?
Let’s pretend to open an Easter Egg. Crack it open. What did you find inside? (Allow for answers) Who stole Easter Eggs at the Train Station? Roberta the Robber What did Engineer Courtney do when Roberta hurt her arm? She made fun of her at first, but then decided to help Roberta Did Engineer Courtney or Roberta act more like Jesus? Engineer Courtney
See if you can follow my example. I’m going to make a silly face and you try to copy it. (Make silly faces and have the kids copy each one) 1 Peter 2:21 (NIrV), “He left you an (picture / example) He expects you to follow.”
What did Jesus’ friends ask for in the Big Story? They wanted to be the most important Did Jesus say, “Yes” to making them most important? No Who did Jesus say to copy? Himself Why is it a wise idea to copy Jesus?
What did Conductor Carl tell us to do in the Big Do? Serve someone
