Lessons

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world—people who enhance the lives around us, reflect God’s goodness, and shine brightest in darkness. He challenges us to evaluate our values through how we spend our time and money, reminding us that true treasure is found in Him. Like a perfect shepherd, Jesus not only provides and protects but passionately pursues us, even when we feel lost or unworthy. These lessons call us to live purposefully, love boldly, and trust that we are deeply valued by a God who never stops seeking us.

Lesson 1

Salt

As Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount, he shares a parable that calls us “the salt of the earth.” This sermon took place long before “salty” became slang for bitter or passive aggressive. In its ancient context, Jesus’ comparison of believers to salt reveals our calling to enhance the lives of those around us, give all the glory to God, and make people want to learn more about Jesus.

Lesson 2

Light

Have you ever noticed how your phone screen appears impossibly dim to read in the glaring sun, yet blinds you with brightness in a pitch black room? That’s the power of light. It shines brightest in the darkness. Jesus has called you to be the light. What exactly does that mean? It means that we find our power source in Jesus, shine for others to see, and drive out the darkness around us.

Lesson 3

Treasure

Do you want to know what people value? Look at how they spend their time and their money. Calendars and bank accounts reveal a lot. In this parable, Jesus tells a story straight from a pirate movie — about buried treasure. It forces us to ask ourselves, “what does our lifestyle say about our values?”

Lesson 4

One Lost Sheep

Jesus is a good shepherd, so he protects and provides for his sheep. He takes it one step further though, because he is our perfect shepherd. He pursues his sheep as well. When you are lost or far from home, never underestimate the passionate pursuit of Jesus for his people. Whenever you are feeling isolated, alone, average, not-good-enough, or inadequate, remind yourself that you are the one lost sheep Jesus will never stop pursuing.
