Signs of Glory (John 1-12) – Prologue, 1:1-18 – First Witnesses, First Week, & First Sign, 1:19-2:25 – Four Encounters, 3-4 – Four Feasts, 5-10 – Final Sign, 11

The Raising of Lazarus (John 11)

Lazarus = “God helps” ● Headline: “A certain man was ill…” ● Bethany (2 Miles east of Jerusalem)

Narrative Sessions: ● Jesus’ Perfect Timing? Jesus waited 2 days. Lazarus had been dead for 4 days. • Possible reconstruction: Did Lazarus die the same day Jesus gave the message, “This illness does not end in death”, to messengers who then had a two-day journey home, only to find Lazarus already dead? ● Risk of Return = Let’s go die with Jesus! ● Human Response = If you had been here… (x3). ● Jesus’ Response = Jesus was deeply moved and troubled. ● John’s Belief = Later he will believe at the sight of the burial clothes (Jn 20:5-7). ● Jesus’ Substitution • Jn 11:16 “Let’s go die with him!” • Jn 11:53 “From that day on, they plotted to take his life.” • Jn 12:10 “The chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well…” ● I am the Resurrection & the Life (number 5 of 7)

Caiaphas Prophesied? ● High Priest from 18-35 AD (appointment by Rome). Caiaphas was the son-in-law of Annas, who was appointed by Rome as the High Priest AD 7-14. Several of his sons were also appointed High Priests. ● Caiaphas prophesied? (cf. Saul, Balaam, etc.) “It is better for one man to die for the people than that the whole nation perish”. How did John know Caiaphas said this? He had connections in the household of the high priestly family. ● John’s Gospel presents a trial—not only of Jesus, but also of those who opposed Him.
