1 Corinthians 1:10 thru 31

Paul addresses a major problem in the Corinthian church: disunity caused by pride and loyalty to different leaders (Paul, Apollos, Peter). His solution is a return to the Gospel—Christ crucified—which may seem foolish to the world, but is God's true wisdom and power. The message of the cross leaves no room for boasting or comparison. True unity comes from humility and focusing on Christ alone. Core Message: Boast only in the Lord.

Section 02

Session 2 – 1 Corinthians 1:10-31

Summary: The dominant theme of at least the next several chapters, if not the whole

book, is unity.

The issue in particular the Corinthian believers faced was divisions and competition

with one another based on their associations with different Christian leaders, namely

Paul himself, Apollos, and Cephas (Peter).

The antidote to this disunity will be to focus on the core Christian message of grace

and a series of reflections on how that message works itself out in a community.

The message of the Gospel is Christ crucified, which is a stumbling block to Jews and

foolishness to the Greeks. But for those who believe, it is the power and wisdom of

God.

Stay humble by reflecting on the message of the Gospel.

Therefore there is nothing for anyone to boast about. Paul ends this section by quoting

Jeremiah 9:24,

“Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Questions for Reflection/Discussion:

-What are some faulty ways that Christians divide themselves from one another?

-In what ways could you be tempted to think of yourself as better than other believers?

-How does the message of the cross eliminate any place for disunity?
