What’s So Special About Jesus?

There are many religions that teach that there are many ways to get to Heaven. If you will give to the poor, make a pilgrimage to a holy city, or simply die trying to bring harm to those who don’t believe in your god—your chances for access into Heaven get more and more likely. Even in the Christian church world, there are many children who are confused as to exactly what is THE WAY to get into Heaven. Is it through going to church every time the doors are open? Giving in the offering? Memorizing scripture? In this lesson, the children will learn that Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE life. The only way to assure your place in Heaven is by putting your trust in Him—PERIOD!

SkitMaterials: Referee Ricky

Leader: Today our verse in “Ten For Life” is John 14:6. (All of a sudden the music theme from “NFL On Fox” or “Monday Night Football” begins playing. Referee Ricky comes running in blowing his whistle!)

Ricky: (blows whistle) WOO HOO! What’s going on people?

Leader: Hey there, Ricky! What brings you here?

Ricky: I came by to get some advice.

Leader: Well, I will certainly try my best to help you. What’s up?

Ricky: I got this friend of mine who is a referee...

Leader: Of course.

Ricky: Well, anyway...he’s also a guy who grew up in another country. He grew up being taught about Jesus.

Leader: That’s a good thing, right?

Ricky: Well, normally I would say, “Yes,” but in this case I am not sure. He said he was always taught that Jesus was a good teacher, a good man, and a good prophet.

Leader: Those things are definitely true.

Ricky: Yeah, but he says that’s IT! He says that Jesus is not the Son of God. He says that He is not the way to Heaven. He says that there are many paths to Heaven and that we all have to find our own path to Heaven. Is that true?

Leader: Well, what do YOU think?

Ricky: I don’t know what to think. I mean, it sort of makes sense what he is saying. I mean there are SO MANY religions out there. Surely they can’t all be wrong. I mean there has to be more than ONE way to Heaven, don’t you think? I just wish I knew what the Bible had to say about all of this.

Leader: I think you’re in luck.

Ricky: How do you figure I’m in luck. I don’t even know what the Bible says about it.

Leader: I’m saying that because today’s Power Verse talks totally about this. I want you to watch our Power Verse video. I think it will clear this up completely.

Ricky: Wow! So, Jesus really is THE ONLY WAY to get to Heaven.

Leader: That’s right! So, what are you going to do with this information?

Ricky: I tell you what I am going to do. I am going to go to my friend and put it in his face! I am going to say, “Oh yeah! Jesus is THE WAY! Jesus is THE WAY! In your FACE!!!”

Leader: That’s no way to act!

Ricky: Why not? I’m right! He’s wrong! I have to “face” him. That’s the American Way.

Leader: I don’t think that is what God would have you do. What you need to do is share God’s love with him and show him that Jesus cares about him. Then, as he sees God’s love in you, it will show him that Jesus in you makes a difference.

Ricky: Then, I will be able to tell him about how Jesus is THE WAY. Not to put it in his face, but so that he can accept Jesus in his life. Right?

Leader: I think that is a much better plan.

Ricky: Well, cool! I can’t wait to go talk to him. I will see you all later! (runs out of the room blowing his whistle while his theme music plays)

Game Time

Choose one boy and one girl to compete in this game (with the help of their team members in the audience).

They will take turns (with the help of their team members in the audience) deciding which way to turn. If they make the correct choice, they will find food under their arrow and can continue to play if they want. For every piece of food they find, their team will receive points. However, if they don’t find food, their turn is over and the lose all the points for that round. The team with the most points wins the game.

Illustrated MessageMaterials: a pen and piece of paper; a sticker

Ask anyone what they think about Jesus and you will likely get some of the same answers. “Jesus was a good man.” “Jesus died on a cross.” “Jesus was a teacher who lived long ago.” “Jesus was a kindhearted person who treated people fairly.” All of these statements about Jesus are true. But, there’s much more to Jesus than many people know. He was MUCH more than just a “good” man, a “kind” person, and a “powerful” prophet. In our Power Verse for “Ten For Life” today, we are going to learn what makes Jesus so special. Jesus tells us three things about Himself that set Him apart from everyone else in the world.

The world says that there are many ways to get to Heaven. They say, “Trust in Mohammad! Pray to Buddha! Do good deeds! Be a nice person!” Those are all things that people say will get you to Heaven. The world doesn’t believe that there is only ONE WAY to Heaven. But, Jesus said in our Power Verse today, “I am THE WAY…” Heaven is Jesus’ home, so He certainly knew how to tell us how to get there, right?

(choose a volunteer from the audience) Boys and girls, I am excited because I have invited __ (name of volunteer) to my house for dinner. There’s only one problem. They do not know how to get to my house. They come to me and say (have your volunteer repeat after you) , “How do I get to your house?” I say, “I would love to tell you how to get to my house. Do you have a pen and paper to write down the directions?” (pull out the pen and paper and hand it to them) “Of course you do. OK, write this down as I tell you the directions. Go straight down Main st., turn left on 3rd street, and then go 6 blocks.” (once your volunteer has written down the directions, show them to the audience) Now, kids, I have given my friend the directions to my house. This is the way to get to my house. What happens if my friend decides there are many ways to get to my house and they choose one of those ways? What if along the way to my house some people on the side of the road say they have a better way to get to my house?

What if my friend here chooses to follow their way instead of the way I gave? That’s right, my friend will probably get lost and never make it it to my house. It’s MY house, and I know how to get there. The way to get there is to follow the instructions I gave, right?

Just like my friend, ___________, should listen to the directions I was giving to MY home, we should pay close attention to the directions that Jesus is giving to God’s home. The world tries to say there are many ways to get to Heaven, but the world is not who we should listen to. Jesus knows the way to Heaven. We should listen to what He says is THE WAY to get there. He said, “I am THE WAY.” That’s one of the things that is so special about Jesus. He is THE WAY! But, also...

When something is the TRUTH, you can’t argue with it. It doesn’t matter if you BELIEVE it’s true. If it’s true—then it’s true, right? (place the sticker in the middle of your forehead) I have a sticker in the middle of my forehead. But, you know what? I don’t want to BELIEVE that there’s a sticker on my forehead. I choose to believe that there is NOT a sticker on my forehead. But, guess what? There’s a sticker on my forehead, isn’t there? Even though I don’t believe it—it’s still the TRUTH. But, you don’t get it. What if I go to my friend’s house and she tells me that there is NOT a sticker on my forehead. So, I begin to doubt whether or not there is a sticker on my forehead. Does that change the fact that there is a sticker on my forehead? Nope! Because the TRUTH is—there’s a sticker on my forehead.

Boys and girls, the TRUTH is the TRUTH. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the TRUTH…” There are many people in the world who believe that Jesus is not the way and the truth. But, just because they don’t believe it—it doesn’t change the TRUTH! No matter who believes it, no matter who doubts it—the TRUTH is the TRUTH. Jesus is THE TRUTH! That’s another thing that is so special about Jesus! But also…

Jesus is THE LIFE—eternal life! He is the only way to find true life—in Heaven! God’s plan all along was for us to accept Jesus as our Savior, be forgiven of our sins, and spend eternity in Heaven with Him. That’s THE LIFE that God has to offer through Jesus.

What’s so special about Jesus? He is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE. No one comes to the Father in Heaven except by accepting Him. He is ready and willing to forgive each and every one of our sins and give us THE LIFE God has promised for us in Heaven. That’s special. That’s what is so special about Jesus!

(play soft music) Pray with those children who have not received Christ as their Savior. Pray that God will help them always believe in Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life.
