Pray For Good Things!

This content is provided free of charge by The Ark Church.
Question of the Day: If you could have one wish, what would you wish to receive?
Host and Co-host enter. Have the kids already on stage and ready to participate in the game.
Host
Welcome to the Lab! These kids are going to attempt to eat as many donut holes as possible in 60 seconds without using their hands.
Co-host
On your mark, get set, go!
Play optional game music. Set a 60-second timer. Continue to place new doughnuts on each plate as the kids finish them.
Host
Great job to our winner.
Co-host
Those donut holes remind me of today’s lesson.
Host
Today, we’re talking about bread. Did you know that bread was mentioned in the Lord’s Prayer? It was, and it teaches us something important about how to pray.
Co-host
Like praying for more donuts after I finish eating the whole box?
Host
Not exactly, but you’ll see how it fits in. First, let’s stand to worship. As you do, tell someone nearby your favorite thing to eat on a slice of bread.
Host and Co-host enter.
Host
Does anyone think that Alex should talk to God before he does something drastic?
Co-host
Why do you think people skip asking God what He wants?
Ask a couple of kids for responses.
Host
Let’s see what Jesus taught us to do when we pray by checking out our Big Point.
The Host and Co-host choose a kid to volunteer.
Co-host
Let’s all say it together: Pray For Good Things! Is it okay to pray for things we might need?
Host
Absolutely! Last week, we learned to begin our prayers by respecting God, but He also wants us to share our needs with Him.
Co-host
What about asking what He wants us to do?
Host
Definitely! That’s part of it, too. Sometimes, people worry that God is giving them not-so-great gifts. Let’s play a little game with some treats. Some of them are good, and others are pretty gross.
Choose some kids to come up on stage. Have them spin and choose a jellybean of the same color. If you have a digital spinner, consider using that so the audience can see.
Some of those treats weren’t treats at all. They felt like punishments. Jesus said in Matthew 7:11 (NIrV), “Even though you are evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
Co-host
If we know how to give good things, then think how much better a perfect, loving God is at helping us.
Host
That doesn’t mean that God will always give you a million dollars, but His help will be exactly what you need to live out His big plan.
Co-host
That’s a good thing. Let’s see if Alex is less confused.
Host and Co-host enter.
Host
Rusty and Alex are getting a bit carried away.
Co-host
Yeah, and their Ninja Turtle act doesn’t feel like it’s helping Alex get closer to finding out what God wants.
Host
They definitely need our Big Point Pray For Good Things! Let’s choose an assistant to reveal the Big Verse from the Bible.
Host and Co-host choose a kid to volunteer.
Host
The Big Verse comes from Matthew 6:10-11 (NIrV), “May Your kingdom come. May what You want to happen be done on earth as it is done in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.” What do you think “daily bread” means?
Allow for answers.
Co-host
It reminds me of a story from the Old Testament. When the Israelites were wandering around in the wilderness, God gave them bread from Heaven. It was called manna.
Host
Here’s where it gets interesting. The bread only lasted one day. If they tried to save extra, the bread would be moldy and gross the next morning. They had to get enough for one day and wait for tomorrow to get more.
Co-host
Why do you think God did that?
Host
Let’s think of it this way. Imagine you ask for gum. So, I promise to give you one gumball every day. (Have kids come up to grab a gumball from the gumball machine) If you want more, I will let you come back again the next day. (Have the kids come up again and grab more) You would rely on me for your supply of gum.
Co-host
That was like the bread from Heaven. It taught the Israelites to trust God for help. By praying for God’s help each day, we learn to trust God, too.
Host
That’s because we need God’s help every day. We can’t get by without it. We can’t do everything ourselves. By praying this way, we remind ourselves of how much we need God’s help. It teaches us to trust God. He will help us day after day. Let’s take a moment to worship God.
Optional, play soft instrumental music.
Storyteller
Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. One of the best parts about attending church is that we have many people around us who, like us, believe that God has good things planned for our lives. These people want to put their faith into action to believe for good things for you. So, I want to invite you to come to the front and pray with one of our Connectors. Let them know what you’re asking God for today. Together, you can pray and believe that God will provide. Let’s stand up, and you can come pray with a volunteer as we worship and sing.
Host and Co-host enter.
Host
God provided in a pretty incredible way. Who would have thought that the first fish Peter caught would have exactly the money needed to pay the tax? Only God could do that.
Co-host
That story was a great example of the Big Point, Pray For Good Things!
Host
Talk about what God can do as you do this week’s Big Do. Take a moment to ask God what He wants you and your family to do. Write those things down so you can continue to pray about them. Be willing to say “Yes” to God’s big plan.
Co-host
Let’s examine some real gifts that were given to others and decide if they were good or bad gifts. There might be some surprises there.
Show the slide and have the kids act out what is on screen.
Host
Let’s gather with our small groups and discuss what we’ve learned today.
Gather the kids into small groups and discuss the following.
Let’s think of some needs we have every single day. What do you need more of every day?
What was needed in the Big Story today? (Money to pay the tax) How did God provide what was needed? (Coin in the fish’s mouth) What does that tell us about God? (He can provide in incredible ways)
Do you think that God wants to help us? Why do you believe that? (Jesus said that our Heavenly Father loves us even more than our parents) What are some things you could pray for and ask God to provide? What would you say to someone who thought God is too busy to listen to our needs?
What is the Big Do?
Play optional game music. Choose two kids from the audience to come on stage and answer the question. The first kid to buzz in and correctly answer the question will win a small piece of candy and the opportunity to spin the wheel for a bonus.
