I Can Worship God In Truth

This lesson helps children understand that real worship means knowing and following the truth about God through Jesus. Using the story of Peter and Simon, it shows the importance of rejecting false beliefs and focusing on God’s Word. Kids are encouraged to worship God with genuine hearts and to let the Holy Spirit guide them in truth.

Series Note

Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Junior lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!

Venue Ideas:

Lesson 6 (Kung Fu Panda): Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.

Ninja Warrior: Rent, purchase, or create Ninja Warrior stations for the kids to showcase their ninja skills.

Martial Arts Demonstration: Contact a local martial arts gym to see if they can do a martial arts demonstration for the kids.

Firefighters and Police: Connect with your local firefighters and police to bring a firetruck and police car to visit the kids. Allow the kids to tour the vehicles and experience it up close.

Welcome

Host

Welcome to Summer To The Max at the Movies! It’s Kung Fu Panda Week.

Engage 1Materials: Karate Gi, Chopsticks, Chopstick Helpers, Plates, Noodles (Cooked), Table (2)

Prior to this Engage, choose 8-10 kids to play this game. On the stage, set up two tables. On each table, place one plate for each kid. The first plate contains the noodles. On the opposite end of the table, place an empty plate to collect all of the noodles passed down the line. Set a pair of chopsticks in front of each child’s plate.

Suggested music: Kung Fu Fighting. Co-host enters making various Karate and Kung Fu movements.

Host

You’re really into the theme this week.

Co-host

I know. This costume was not cheap.

Host

I can imagine.

Co-host

You won’t have to imagine once you get your credit card bill. You were so generous to buy me this costume.

Host

Wait, what? I didn’t…

Co-host

Po was quite the Kung Fu artist. Of course, his real specialty was noodles. That’s what this next game is all about. (Bring up the kids) We have two teams of kids. In front of each one is a plate. (To the Host) This game makes no sense. Why are the plates empty?

Host

The first plate is full of noodles. You have to pass the noodles down the line, but you can only pick them up with chopsticks. The winning team is determined by whoever gets the most noodles to the final plate in 60 seconds.

Suggested Game Music: Kung Fu Fighting. Play the game. The first child must pass noodles to the next child, who will continue passing them down the line. Remind the kids they can only use chopsticks.

Host

Great job to our winners. Po didn’t start out knowing how to be a Kung Fu master. He had to learn and grow in his martial arts. That’s what we do as followers of Jesus. We grow as we discover more about Jesus. We need everyone to help us count down from three, and then we’ll read the Big Point.

Co-host

Let’s all say it together, I Can Worship God In Truth! Worshipping God in truth means that we worship the one true God. We don’t worship other things or people. We also understand the truth about our Heavenly Father.

Host

Thankfully, we don’t have to guess what is true about God. We know the one true God because of Jesus. Jesus is God, and everything that Jesus said and did showed us the truth about the God we worship.

Co-host

You can’t know God if you don’t know Jesus.

Host

The good news is that we have the Bible to teach us more and more about Jesus. That way, we can be sure that we worship God in truth. That’s how we keep growing.

Movie Moment

There is a scene in the movie Kung Fu Panda 4 where Po faces off against the Chameleon, a villain who transforms into different fighters—including Po himself. Po ends up giving the scepter to the red panda, Zhen, who uses it to defeat the Chameleon and save the day. If your church has the proper licensing you may choose to show this clip. If you cannot show the clip, simply summarize the moment or describe it to the kids.

Engage 2Materials: Karate Gi

Play suggested music: Kung Fu Fighting. The Co-host is attempting various fast Karate chops as the Host tries to address the kids. He/She should continue until the Host finally gives him/her a look.

Host

Let’s say the Big Point again together,

Host

I Can Worship God In Truth! Wow, that was intense when it looked like Po was fighting himself. But was that really him? It kind of looked like him.

Co-host

It definitely wasn’t Po. It was like an evil version of Po. The true Po is kind and helpful. It would be important to know the difference between the real Po and the fake Po if you needed help.

Host

That’s why it’s important to know the truth about God. We want to worship God in truth. Believing things about God that aren’t in the Bible won’t help you grow as a follower of Jesus or live out God’s big plan.

Co-host

Let’s see what the Bible says about our Big Point. We need everyone to count down from three, and then we’ll read the verse.

Host

John 4:24 (NIrV), “God is spirit. His worshipers must worship Him in the Spirit and in truth.” Jesus said that to a lady who lived in a place called Samaria.

Co-host

Why do you think He told her people had to worship in Spirit and truth?

Host

In that country, Samaria, people worshipped God, but they also worshipped other fake gods. Jesus wanted her to know that His followers must worship the true God. We are able to do that because we have the Holy Spirit’s help.

Co-host

Let’s see how many of you can tell the difference between what is real and what is fake. Have you ever seen the show “Is It Cake?” There are cakes decorated that are so real that you can’t tell the difference. We’re going to look at some slides and see if you can figure out which one is which.

Host

It was so hard to tell which one was which.

Co-host

What if someone says something about God, and you don’t know if it’s true? How can we worship God in truth?

Host

That’s a great question. Jesus said that His followers worship God in Spirit and in truth. All followers of Jesus have the Holy Spirit’s help. If someone says something untrue about God, the Holy Spirit can help you remember Bible verses that teach you about God. He can also speak to your heart and warn you when someone says something false about God.

Co-host

Our heart is that invisible part of us that connects with God. Instead of hearing the Holy Spirit speak out loud, you might have a thought pop up from Him that reminds you of the truth.

Host

Peter traveled to Samaria and found some confused people about God. One guy did not understand the truth about God. Let’s see what Peter said to him.

Big Story

Host

I love that Peter didn’t let Simon keep thinking untrue things about God. Peter set him straight about what it really meant to follow God and receive the Holy Spirit. Let’s take a moment to quietly talk to and listen to God at our seats.

Take a moment to thank God for letting you know the truth about Him and ask God to let you know if there’s anything you’re thinking about God that isn’t true so you can make a different choice. Then, sit for a moment and listen for the Holy Spirit to speak. (Pause) I’m so glad you took a moment to listen.

Share info about the giving project you have chosen to support. Consider donating all summer offerings to a local ministry or global missionary.

Engage 3

Co-host

I’m glad that we can know true things about God. Those true things inspire us to worship God. We shouldn’t let anything that’s the opposite of God into our hearts.

Host

That brings us to this week’s Big Do.

Host

Listen to a worship song about God. Talk with your family about what it means. See if you can find some scriptures in the Bible that match what the song says about God.

Co-host

Let’s say our Big Point again,

Co-host

I Can Worship God In Truth!

Host

Let’s connect in our small groups and discuss today’s lesson.

Small Group

Gather the kids into Small Groups and discuss the following.

  • Why do you think knowing what is true about God is so important? We could be worshipping someone or something that isn’t God. We could believe things about God that are wrong. Being confused doesn’t help you.

  • Why was Simon wrong for asking to buy the Holy Spirit’s power? You can’t buy God’s power. He wanted to use that power to make money. He didn’t want to help people.

  • What could you tell someone who believed things about God that aren’t found in the Bible? You could show them the true things written about God in the Bible. You could help them understand why knowing what is true is important. Kindly demonstrate respect and honor for God.
