Countdown / Rules

The **Host** and **Co-Host** enter wearing lab coats. This game is called “What’s in the Box?” Choose several kids to come up to stage, blindfolded. The child must then reach inside the box and guess what he or she is touching. Be creative with items to place in the box. Ideas include: spaghetti noodles, fake fishing worms, Orbeez, crickets, boiled egg with toothpicks, weasel ball toy. If you can find a box with a clear glass or plastic front, that works best, so the audience can see what is in the box.


**Co-Host**
Are you guys ready to play the most exciting game in this room? It’s called “What’s in the Box?”

**Host**
Our blindfolded contestants will reach inside this box and try to correctly guess what they are touching. No help is allowed from the audience, but feel free to react to the “grossness” that you may witness.

**Co-Host**
What’s in the box? Is it alive? Will it bite? Who knows? Let’s play.


Play the game. Allow the kids to reach in and touch the items. Play up the mystery of what’s in the box to amp up the nerves about reaching in. Reveal the correct items after each kid has had a turn.


**Co-Host**
None of those items were particularly scary, but what made it scary was the fear of what it might be.

**Host**
Today we will discover how to handle fear because it’s possible to be peaceful even in a scary situation.

**Co-Host**
First stand to your feet and tell someone nearby which is scarier: a thunderstorm or a surprise spelling test. Let’s see what Herman and Rusty are up to.


Welcome

Worship

Before the Engage, set up the experiment components on the stage.

**Co-Host**
Those kids look like trouble. None of you have ever acted like that with a babysitter, I hope.

**Host**
That looked like a scary situation for Rusty and Sophia. Have you ever been in a situation that was scary? What happened?


**Co-Host**
Fear is something everyone faces, but just because we feel it doesn’t mean we have to act on it.

**Host**
That’s true. We need an assistant to help us with this experiment. (Bring up assistant) I have a table, tablecloth, and dishes on top. I want you to remove the tablecloth without disturbing the items on the table.



Have the child attempt to remove the tablecloth.


**Co-Host**
That jumbled everything up on the table. That reminds me of what happens to us in scary situations. Someone gets sick, you’re in a dangerous place, your family doesn’t get along, the list keeps going. Those scary situations are like pulling the tablecloth out and turning your world upside down.

**Host**
Even though we can’t control scary problems, we can control our response. Let’s see what our Big Point says. I need our assistant to help us reveal it.

**Co-Host**
You will help us count down from three and then read the Big Point. 


**Host**
Let’s all say it together, **I Can Have Peace When I’m Afraid**

**Co-Host**
God wants to give us the power to choose peace, even when we feel afraid.

**Host**
When we trust that God is with us and that He is helping us, bad things may happen, but they don’t have to turn us upside down. Let’s try this again.


Have the **Co-Host** reset the table. When you replace the tablecloth, leave it about halfway on the table, underneath the items, but with most of it hanging off the edge facing you. The tablecloth should be smooth with no seams on the end. Pull straight down as fast as you can to remove it.


**Host**
When you have faith in God, you can choose a calm and peaceful attitude.


**Co-Host**
Let’s see if Rusty and Sophia can choose a peaceful attitude.


Engage 1

**Host**
They have lost total control of their daycare. Have you ever seen your classmates lose control when a substitute teacher was in charge?

**Co-Host**
And it seems they don’t want to deal with the kids any longer. I think they just want to run away. The Big Point could be helpful, 

**Co-Host**
**I Can Have Peace When I’m Afraid!**

**Host**
Let’s see what the Bible says about peace by checking out the Big Verse.


**Host** and **Co-Host** choose a kid to volunteer.



**Co-Host**
We need you to help us count down from three and then read the verse. 

**Co-Host**
John 14:27 (NIrV) says, “I give my peace to you…Do not let your hearts be troubled. And do not be afraid.”

**Host**
Can you believe Jesus said that on the night before He was going to die on the cross!?! Jesus had peace, even when He knew He was going to die. Jesus wanted His disciples, and us, to have that same peace.

**Co-Host**
Some people, like Rusty and Sophia, believe that you find peace when you get rid of your problems. Let’s bring up an assistant to help us. Suppose you find out your best friend is moving.



Hand the child the box labeled “Friends.”

**Host**
That could make you feel afraid that you’ll be left alone. Some people believe that if you could just keep your friend from moving, you would feel perfectly calm and peaceful.


**Co-Host**
Then other problems have a way of popping up. Maybe your family starts fighting a lot.


Hand the child the box labeled “Family.”


**Host**
Even if you stopped them from fighting, something else could pop up, like a bully at school.


Take the box away and hand the child the box labeled “School.”


**Co-Host**
Maybe you think that you’d be peaceful and not afraid if you could get the bully to go away, but then someone you love might get sick, and then you’re afraid they might not get better. 


Hand the child the box labeled “Health.”


**Host**
Finding peace isn’t about getting rid of problems. There will always be challenges that make us feel afraid. Peace comes from knowing that Jesus is with you. (Hand the child the box labeled “Jesus”) He wants to give us peace so that we don’t have to be afraid. If you feel fear, focus on Jesus. Remember that He is with you, and that He will never leave you.

**Co-Host**
A great way to do that is by praying. Another way is worship. Let’s stand and praise Jesus now.


Engage 2

You guys see and hear a lot of crazy stuff on TV and online. You have heard about terrorism and hurricanes, and sometimes you may worry if you and your family are going to be okay. You might be worried about things that are going on right in your own house. The good news is that God has the power to help you. God wants to bring peace to your life, in spite of whatever is going on around you. That’s why we pray and chat with God about the stuff that’s bothering us. He cares about us and will help us. He wants you to be full of peace, not fear. God has amazing power. I want to invite you guys to come down and pray with an adult volunteer. Together you can talk to God and share with Him what’s worrying you, and then ask God to help. You’ll be amazed at what our God can do.

Wow, Sophia and Rusty had those daycare kids marching like a well-run army.

**Host**
It’s safe to say that they got over their fear. See, they didn’t need to get rid of the kids, they just needed to find peace in the middle of the problem. Remember our Big Point, 

**Host**

**Co-Host**
Elisha’s servant couldn’t see the huge army surrounding the enemy army. But once he saw them, he wasn’t afraid any longer. In the same way, we need to remember that even though we can’t see Jesus, we know that He is always with us.

**Host**
This is a great story to share with your family when you do this week’s Big Do. 


**Host**
Find a small rock in your backyard and write “peace” on it. Carry it with you, and whenever you are afraid, hold onto it and remember that Jesus gives you peace.

**Co-Host**
Let’s look at some situations that kids might face, and you tell us how you can choose a calm and peaceful attitude in the middle of that problem.


Show each of the following scenarios and discuss helpful ways to deal with worry and fear. Have the kids suggest positive actions and discuss why giving into fear can create more problems.

Great job. Let’s turn and connect with our small groups and talk about what we’ve learned from the Bible.


Engage 3

 Gather the kids into small groups and discuss the following. 

  - What is something that really makes you feel nervous or afraid?
 - Why was Elisha’s servant afraid?  **He saw the enemy army surrounding them** Why was Elisha not afraid? **He could see the angel army surrounding the enemy** 
 - Why can we be calm in a scary situation? **Because we know that God is with us, and that He will help us even though we can’t see God**
 - When you feel afraid what are some true things that you can tell yourself? **God can calm the storm. I trust that my mom or dad will return to pick me up. My bad dream isn’t real, but Jesus is real. I am not alone because Jesus is with me. God’s angels watch over us to help us.**
 - What did Herman tell us to do with our families in the Big Do? **Find a "peace" rock to help us remember Jesus is with us**

Question of the Day: What bug do you hate most?

Hey guys, welcome to the lab! Have you ever followed someone who was leading you in the wrong direction? Maybe Google Maps took you and your family on a crazy route, or maybe your friend told you to do something that you knew you weren’t supposed to do. Some people, and some things, make really bad leaders. Our feelings are the same way. We all have emotions, like anger, sadness, fear, and disappointment, but these emotions should not have the final say so. You can choose to not let your emotions take the lead. Before we get started on today’s lesson, let’s worship our God who always gives us peace. 


You guys did a great job worshipping God! It’s now time to break up into your small groups. Go ahead and turn to your small group leaders now. 

Small Group Leader,
Use these two minutes to introduce yourself to your kids and go over the rules you have for your group. This will set the expectation and show the kids clear boundaries, setting your group up for success. The ball can be used as a tool to signify whose turn it is to respond. 



It’s time for Lab Wars! This is the part of our service where each team has a chance to win points! Tonight we are talking about fear. There are some crazy fears out there, like pogonophobia is the fear of beards, and ablutophobia is the fear of taking a bath. For tonight’s game, each team will make up their very own phobia. Your small group has a sheet of paper with a mad lib on it. Take some time to fill in the mad lib and then name your phobia. I will be the judge. The team with the best, most crazy, most creative phobia wins! You have two minutes to come up with your phobia. Ready, set, go!


After the two minute timer is up, go around with the microphone to each group. Allow them to read you their phobia, and then pick the team with the most creative one. 



Congratulations to the winning team! Those were some crazy phobias. There are a bunch of phobias out there. It seems like a person could be afraid of anything! Fear is a very real thing. Everyone has felt afraid at some point, but if you let fear be the boss, you can get really stuck. Let’s check in with Herman and the gang to see if they have ever been afraid. 


Lab Wars

That looked like a scary situation for Rusty and Sophia. Those kids were acting out of control! Have you ever been in a situation that was scary? What happened? 

Fear is something everyone faces, but just because we feel it doesn’t mean we have to act on it. Let’s take a look at our Big Point to understand more about what this means. I need a small group to help me reveal what it is. 

**I Can Have Peace When I’m Afraid!** When we feel afraid, God gives us the power to choose peace. We don’t have to stay afraid! This doesn’t mean we will never face scary situations. It means that God will be with us and give us peace, even when we face scary things. One scary thing we all have faced are storms! Let’s turn to our small groups and do an experiment. You and your group get to create a tornado using a couple of bottles. Let’s do it now! 


Follow the steps below to create a simulated tornado in a bottle. Allow 1-2 kids to help with each step, involving as many as possible. When the bottle is finished, allow them to take turns creating a tornado.

Step 1: Pour the water into the bottle using the funnel.

Step 2: Allow the kids to add some of the objects provided.

Step 3: Attach the Tornado Tube to the Bottles.

Step 4: Shake the bottle in a spinning motion to create a funnel in the water. Allow the kids to take a turn.



Give the kids a moment to settle down from the activity. You may want to say something like, “Ok, everyone, sit back on your pockets and face the front.” Then pause until you have their attention.



You guys created mini tornados! If you have seen a tornado in real life, they are definitely a little bigger than that. 

Storms can be scary, and storms aren’t the only scary thing you’ll face. Maybe dogs scare you or maybe spiders freak you out! No matter what comes your way, God can give you the power to choose peace. You don’t have to be afraid all the time. Just remember our Big Point, 


**I Can Have Peace When I’m Afraid!** Let’s see if Sophia and Rusty can choose peace.

**I Can Have Peace When I’m Afraid!** Having peace isn’t about getting rid of every scary situation. In fact, Jesus never promised us that every problem would go away. Let’s take a look at what He did promise us in our Big Verse. First, I need a small group to help me count down. 

John 14:27 (NIrV), “I give my peace to you…Do not let your hearts be troubled. And do not be afraid.” Jesus gave us His peace; it’s ours! But how do you keep your heart from getting troubled or bothered by fear? It sounds like it’s easier said than done. Let’s turn to our small groups to play a game that will help show us how to do just that. 


Each group has a Pie Face game. Play a couple rounds as normal, loading up the tray with whipped cream and cranking the gears. Then play again, only this time put your hand between the kid’s face and the whipped cream. Afterwards ask the kids the following question

Were you more nervous playing without my hand to block or without my hand there? Why? **I was less nervous when your hand was blocking the whipped cream because I knew it wouldn’t hit my face.**


Give the kids a moment to settle down from the activity. You may want to say something like, “Ok everyone, sit back on your pockets, face the front.” Then pause until you have their attention. 

Some people believe that you find peace when you get rid of your problems. That’s not true. There will always be challenges that can make us feel afraid. Peace comes from knowing that Jesus is with us. Just like your small group leader used their hand to block the whipped cream from hitting you, Jesus is with you and He’s helping you. Knowing that brings us peace. When you feel fear, focus on Jesus. Remember that He is with you and that He will never leave you. That is how you can follow our Big Point,

 - Why do you think God doesn’t want you to be afraid? **Because fear isn’t good for us. It doesn’t make us feel good, it limits us, and keeps us from doing what God wants us to do.** 

 - What is something you can do to choose peace next time you are afraid? **You can remember God is with you, you can repeat the Big Point, you can pray, you can read a Bible verse, you can talk to a trusted adult, etc.**

We are going to take a moment to pray as a group. But first, does anyone have something specific you want to pray for? Maybe there’s something that you are afraid of, and you want to ask God to give you peace. (Take a moment and get prayer requests from your small group and then pray as a group). 


Give the groups a moment to finish up. You can say something like, “Ok, if you aren’t finished yet, take the next couple seconds to finish up” Then give them a moment until you have their attention. 



Fear is not God’s best for you. It steals your joy, your peace, and can keep you from doing what God wants you to do! It is a horrible leader. Thankfully, Jesus gives us His peace and promised to never leave us. I am so glad our Big Point is true, 



**I Can Have Peace When I’m Afraid!** Let’s see if Sophia and Rusty can get a handle on their fear.
