I call that a disaster. (Pause) Oh, you mean my dance? I can’t help myself. I have to dance whenever I hear the music.

Then you need to hear about the Fruit of the Spirit because the one we’re talking about today can help you learn how to control yourself, which is something I hope you learn to do. To begin today, we’re going to play a game that will require some self-control. It’s called a flinch test. We’re going to have some kids to come on stage and try it out. The goal is not to move, even an inch.





Flinch Test Ideas:

Blow up a balloon until it pops

Wave a feather near someone’s face

Surprise someone by blowing an air horn 

Throw a ball attached to a rope that comes close but doesn’t hit someone

It was hard to completely avoid moving. Are you sure I can do that?

I’m going to help our friend get under control. While I do that, You get to see what's going on today in the lab. As you do, tell someone which is harder: not to complain when dinner is something you dislike or not complaining when you have to go somewhere boring.

Then we need to choose a Lab Assistant to come up and help us reveal the Big Point so we can discover the truth from the Bible.





**Host** and **Co-Host** choose a kid to volunteer.

Get ready to read our Big Point. We’ll count down from three, and then it's all you!

Play “Footloose” 1:02-1:29. **Co-Host** tries to resist but gives in and dances.





**Host**

You can control your actions. Let’s let this group of kids show you how it’s done. When you hear the music, show (**Co-Host**’s name) the craziest dance you’ve ever done. Wiggle your arms, jump up and down, shake a leg. Whatever. But when the music stops, freeze wherever you are. If your arms and legs are up in the air, stay there until the music starts again. 

Play “Footloose” 1:02-1:29



Play the music, and have the kids freeze when it stops. Vary the length of time you play the song, including some short clips with short pauses as well as a long freeze.

Maybe you can control your dancing, but what about when you’re so frustrated you just want to scream and call people names?



**Host**

We have help controlling ourselves. When we listen to and follow the Holy Spirit, He helps us produce good fruit, like self-control. Even when it seems impossible, God can help us stay in charge. He gives us power.



**Co-Host**

He gives us power to choose. I like that. It’s much better than being controlled by an 80s dance song. We should see if Rusty has learned that yet.

Rusty seems convinced that he has no option but to act like a chicken.

He’s having a hard time believing that the Big Point is true. But it is. Anyone in this room can do it with the Holy Spirit’s help. Let’s say it again,

We need a Lab Assistant to help us reveal the Big Verse so we can find out what the Bible says.





**Host**

The Big Verse helps us understand more about the Big Point. After we count down from three read the verse.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIrV), “God gave us His Spirit…He helps us control ourselves.”



**Host**

The Holy Spirit helps us control ourselves. That’s why followers of Jesus can be more successful at having self-control.



**Co-Host**

It actually works in any situation. We’ll choose some of you to come up and pick an item from this bag which represents a place where you might need self-control. We’ll talk about how we can stay in charge in that place.





Have kids choose items from the bag. Have the **Co-Host** and kids act out the scenario and allow the kids to suggest ways to stay in charge.



Books: You get bored in the library, and you feel the urge to make loud noises, so everyone in your class will laugh.

Soccer Ball: Your coach tells you to play defense, but you really want to be an attacker. You feel the urge to rush forward and go for the goal.

Foam Finger: Your parents tell you to leave your brother/sister alone, but you can’t seem to resist the urge to poke him/her.

Some of you might feel out of control today. No matter what has happened, remember that God hasn’t given you a spirit of fear, but a spirit of self-control. We have some volunteers at the front who want to pray with you. If you’re having a hard time staying in control, come to the front, and let’s pray together. God wants to help you stay in charge.

You can share that story with your family when do this week’s Big Do.

The Big Do is to test your family’s ability to resist making a noise. Yep, it’s a simple quiet game. See who in your family can stay the quietest the longest. 



**Host**

Let’s try it now. We’re going to see which group (divide the kids by section, gender, or grade) can avoid making a single noise for the next 30 seconds. Our adult volunteers will monitor the groups to make sure. If even one person makes a peep, your whole team is out. 









Have the kids sit quietly for 30 seconds. Don’t play any music. Have the volunteers check the crowd for any noises. You can eliminate teams or simply declare whoever is left as the winner after a certain number of rounds.

Welcome to the Lab! We are so glad you are here! Go ahead and turn to your Small Group Leaders now to talk about the Big Question of the Day. 







Optional, play game music. 

Small Group Leader

Use this time to introduce yourself to your kids, talk about the Big Question, and go over the rules. Use the ball to signify whose turn it is to talk. If someone wants to answer the question, he/she raises their hand, and the Small Group Leader throws that child the ball. When the person finishes speaking, he/she throws the ball back to the Small Group Leader, who then chooses the next person to answer.







Today we are wrapping up our series about the Fruit of the Spirit. Let’s take a look at the verse in the Bible that talks about these good qualities the Holy Spirit grows in us. 

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIrV), “But the fruit the Holy Spirit produces is love, joy and peace. It is being patient, kind and good. It is being faithful and gentle and having control of oneself.” The last Fruit of the Spirit is self-control. That reminds me of a game you may have played before, Red Light Green Light. That’s right! It’s time for Lab Wars. Today I need you to send up two representatives from each group.



The rules of the game are simple. Everyone starts at the far end of the room, and when the lights show green, you start walking. When the lights show red, you must freeze exactly where you are. This is a true test of your self-control. I’ve got several judges up here, and they aren’t going to even let the smallest of movements get past them. If they see you move, you’re out. This is high-stakes Red Light Green Light. Whichever person wins, their entire group gets candy! Are you ready? Here we go!







For extra fun play suspenseful music. Signify the Red and Green Light however you would like to. Whenever it is “red light,” keep the lights on red for a little while, and then make the kids freeze for a longer period of time. This will up the suspense, and it allows you an opportunity to get the crowd involved in cheering.





Great job to our winning group! You definitely have to practice self-control in order to win at that game. Let’s check in with our friends in the Lab. 

Lab Wars

Rusty is having some serious chicken issues. We should quickly reveal today’s Big Point to help him out. I need a Small Group to help me count it down and reveal what it is. 





Let’s all say it together, **Stay In Charge!** When we walk in step with the Holy Spirit, He helps us stay in charge of our emotions, mind, bodies, and feelings. Let’s turn to our Small Groups to do an activity to help us live this out.

**Small Group Leader**

Today each of you will make a bracelet. Every time you see it, remember what you can do to practice self-control. 



The first bead is red. (Show the red bead). Red means stop. When something happens that make you angry or anxious, and you are tempted to lose your cool, take a pause and step back. The next bead is yellow. (Show the yellow bead). The yellow bead means pray. This could be out loud or in your head but take a moment and ask God to help you. The last bead is green. (Show the green bead). Green means go. When you've stopped and prayed, then it is time to act. Move forward with your day knowing that the Lord will help you practice self-control.



By following these steps, you can listen to and follow the Holy Spirit and stay in charge of your feelings, words, and actions.





Handout the supplies. Kids can add other colors on either side of the red, yellow, and green beads to make it their own and be creative. As they work, discuss the following:

What does it mean to be "in charge" of your words? **Speaking words that are kind, respectful, encouraging, loving, true**



Ephesians 4:29 (NIV) says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." 



What does it mean to be "in charge" of your actions? **Choosing to obey God and the authorities He has put over us, doing things that help others and show them His love**



Jeremiah 26:13 (NIrV) says, "So change the way you live and act. Obey the Lord your God.

Even when it seems impossible, God can help us have self-control. When you wear these bracelets, it will help give you a reminder that God gives us the power to

I want everyone to close your eyes. Think of a situation in which it is hard for you to have self-control. Maybe it’s at school, with a certain friend, at home. I’m going to give you a minute to think.



Everyone can open their eyes. We are going to pray and ask God to give us self-control in these situations. We can ask Him to help us stay in charge of our thoughts and emotions and thank Him for helping us in those situations. I want everyone to bow their heads and close their eyes and pray on your own about your situation for just a moment. 









Allow the kids time to pray on their own, and then finish the time by praying for your group.

God always hears our prayers! So, this week, I know He is going to help you with those situations you just prayed about. Let’s say our Big Point again
