Engage 1 Prep. This segment uses a large mouth as a fun visual. You could make one out a piece of foam board, purchase an inflatable pool float in the shape of a mouth or even a shark mouth, or you can simply use a hula hoop to represent a mouth.


Engage 3 Prep: Choose a range of snacks. Before the Engage, look at the labels of each item in order to compare calories, fat, protein, etc. Choose two teams of kids along with an adult volunteer to help. Encourage the audience to shout advice as they play. The winning team is the one with the most correct answers.

What is all of that?

**Co-Host**
I’m participating in Herman’s neighborhood fitness contest. I’m aiming to be the healthiest person at the lab.

**Host**
(To the kids) Do you guys think that our friend is making healthy eating choices?

**Co-Host**
What could be better for getting in shape and building muscles than junk food and energy drinks?

**Host**
A lot of things. Can you guys name some foods that you know are healthier than these foods?

**Co-Host**
You’re sure that a one pound bag of M&M’s is not as healthy as a pound of vegetables? Shocking. I guess I need to return some things to the store and do some research on healthy food. 

**Host**
Did you know that we also have to keep our invisible hearts healthy? A strong spirit inside you is just as important as a healthy body. In fact, it’s more important. Today we’ll discover what to feed it. But first stand to your feet and tell someone nearby which fruit you like best: apples or bananas.

What should a personal trainer actually do for Rusty? (Allow for answers) Does it seem like that guy is helping or hurting Rusty?

**Co-Host**
Yep, his words are really hurtful. Did you know that you can feast on words?

**Host**
It’s true. Words are like food for your invisible heart, the part of you that connects with God. Let’s learn our Big Point to see what our heart needs. I need a volunteer to help us reveal it.

(**Host** and **Co-Host** choose a kid to volunteer.)

**Co-Host**
Would you please help us count down from three and then read the Big Point?

**Host**
Let’s all say it together, **Put In The Good!** It’s not enough just to try to keep out bad stuff, like we talked about last week. If you want to guard your heart, then you have to actively put good stuff inside.

**Co-Host**
Imagine if you avoided junk food but never actually ate any good food. You still wouldn’t be healthy.

**Host**
I have a giant mouth here. Let’s feed this mouth. I’m going to read each item, and you guys can tell me if it’s something you should feed on or not. If it’s good food for our invisible hearts, then I’ll have someone place it in the mouth.


On each of the foam balls, (it could be any size ball such as a playground ball or ball pit ball) write or attach a label with the following words or phrases. 

 - Remembering how God has helped you

 - Doubting that God really cares

 - Negative thoughts about yourself

 - Remembering God’s plan for your life

 - Talking about God’s love

 - Saying what God can do

 - Complaining

 - Thankfulness for what you have

 - Reading about Jesus’ miracles

 - Speaking your faith in Jesus

 - Talking about your fears over and over

 - Assuming the worst will happen

 - Believing God will give you strength

If you ate a steady diet of bad words, then you would feel terrible.

That’s why we feed our hearts good things. If we want a healthy heart, then we have to focus on what is good. Let’s see if Rusty can do that.

He believed everything that guy said, and now Rusty doesn’t believe he can win. I can’t stand the thought of Skip cheating his way to victory. Rusty needs to follow our Big Point,

**Put In The Good!**

**Host**
When it comes to good things to put inside you, nothing is better than God’s Word. Let’s reveal the Big Verse.

(**Host** and **Co-Host** choose a kid to volunteer.)

**Co-Host**
Help us as we count down from three, and then you can read the verse. 



**Co-Host**
Psalm 1:2 (NIrV) says, “The Law of the Lord gives them joy. They think about His law day and night.”


**Host**
King David wrote this song. He was someone who loved to think about God’s Word. There’s a reason why it’s helpful to think about the Bible throughout your day. I think we have something that will help. I’m going to show you a slide, and I want you to memorize what it says.


**Co-Host**
What did it say? (Allow for answers) What’s wrong? Why didn’t you get it memorized?

**Host**
It’s hard to get things into your brain in only three seconds. You need a little time to read it over and over. Let’s bring the slide back up, and this time one of our adult volunteers will stand in front of your group and help you guys memorize it.


Show the slide for a couple of minutes. Split the kids into groups or sections and have an adult volunteer help each section of kids memorize the phrase on screen. Allow the kids to say the phrase from memory.

It made a big difference when you had time.

That’s why we want to spend time reading and thinking about God’s Word. It’s the best “food” for our heart. If you don’t spend time in it, you won’t know what the Bible says.

A strong heart needs God’s Word.

Speaking of putting in the good, let’s do that now by worshipping God.



Engage 2

As a Christian, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. You have other Christians to help you stay strong, even when bad things happen. They can pray for you and remind you of God’s words. They bring good to your heart. We have some adult volunteers at the front who would like to pray with you. It doesn’t matter what kind of challenge you’re facing; you have help. If you’d like to pray with someone, come to the front.



Big Story

Rusty sounded like a completely different person when he quoted God’s word.

**Host**
That trainer may have had big muscles, but he had a weak spirit. Thankfully Rusty can train him on how to build up his heart. Remember,

That’s what David did in our story. He was down, but not out because he listened to God. God’s word built up David’s spirit, and he was able to win the battle.

**Host**
That’s a story that you can share when you do this week’s Big Do.

Have a healthy snack with your family, and as you eat the snack, talk about good things that you can put into your invisible heart.

**Co-Host**
Let’s practice picking out the healthiest snack. We’ve learned today how to pick out good things for our invisible hearts, but let’s see how good you are at picking out snacks for your body.

We have different snacks. When I say go, each team has 60 seconds to arrange these in order from the least healthy to the healthiest. We have compared the nutritional value of each item. Let’s see if you can figure it out. Go!

Gather the kids into small groups and discuss the following.

 - How did the personal trainer’s words hurt Rusty? **They made him feel like a failure. They destroyed his confidence** Has anyone’s words ever got you down? What happened?

 - How would you have felt if you were in David’s situation? How did David make a wise choice? **He used God’s words to strengthen himself** 
 - Why is it important to put good things in our heart? **It strengthens our spirit. It helps us to have faith in difficult times. The good things remind us of truth. It helps us to keep going and not give up**
 - What did Herman tell us to do with our families in the Big Do? **Have a healthy snack with your family and talk about good things that you can put into your invisible heart.**

Lab Wars Prep: Prior to this segment, prep each group by providing a bean bag and printing the Big Point on paper, one word per sheet. To make it more challenging for the older groups, print some random words and put them in the mix. (Suggestion: “Burger”, “Don’t”, “Never”, etc.)

Hey guys, welcome to the Lab! One thing everyone loves is yummy food. Someone, raise your hand and tell me your favorite food. (Walk around with the microphone, allowing some kids to answer this question) Very few people, when asked this question, will say broccoli, zucchini, or brussels sprouts! But all those things are really good for you! Just like there are good things you can put in your body, there are also good things you can put in your spirit. That’s what we’re talking about tonight. But first let’s stand up and worship God! 


You guys did a great job worshipping God! It’s now time to break up into your small groups. Go ahead and turn to your small group leaders now. 

Small group leaders, Use these two minutes to introduce yourself to your kids and go over the rules you have for your group. This will set the expectation and show the kids clear boundaries, setting your group up for success. The ball can be used as a tool to signify whose turn it is to respond.

It’s time for Lab Wars! In this week’s battle, everyone gets to play! Each team has several words printed on paper. As a group, put them in the correct order. When your small group leader says you have it correct, a chosen representative can run up here with your bean bag and try to throw it in the giant mouth. If you are an older group, be careful! There are some words that don’t belong, so toss those out! Does everyone understand? Small group leaders, choose your representative now, but remember, don’t come up until you have the words in the correct order. On your mark, get set, go! 
 

Congratulations to our winners! You guys unscrambled those words so fast! What was printed on the papers? (Allow the kids to answer.) That’s right, and that is our Big Point today! 

**Put In The Good!** Just like it’s important to feed our bodies with healthy food, it is even more important to feed our hearts with good things! Before we dive deeper into this, let’s check in with Herman and the gang to see what they’re up to. 



Lab Wars

That might be the worst personal trainer I’ve ever seen. Does it seem like that guy is helping or hurting Rusty? You’re right; his words are really hurtful. Do you know that you can feast on words? It’s true. Words are like food for your invisible heart, the part of you that connects with God. And just like it’s important to feed your body healthy food, it’s important to feed your invisible heart good things. That’s what our Big Point is all about. Let’s look at it again, 

**Put In The Good!** Let’s turn to our small groups and play a game. Each group has several plastic balls with a phrase on them. It’s up to you to decide if the phrase is something we should put in our hearts. If it is, then toss it in the bucket. Let’s play now!

Younger: If the child(ren) can’t read, read the phrase to the group, and then choose a kid to decide whether it is good or bad. If it’s good, let the kid toss the ball in the bucket.

**Put In The Good!** When it comes to good things, God’s Word is the very best thing we can put in our heart. Let’s reveal our Big Verse. I need a small group to help me count it down from three! (Choose a small group to help you count it down.) Ready,

Psalm 1:2 (NIrV) says, “The Law of the Lord gives them joy. They think about His law day and night.” When you spend time reading and thinking about God’s Word, you get stronger, and your invisible heart gets healthier! Let’s turn to our small groups and spend some time strengthening our hearts. 

Each small group has several verses typed on a piece of paper along with some 3x5 cards. Have the kids pick a verse to write on their card. Spend the rest of the time decorating the card. They can take home this card and put it on their bathroom mirror or somewhere they will see it all the time to help them memorize the verse.

Younger: For the younger groups, provide 3x5 cards with the verse printed on them. Read the verse together as a group, then give them time to decorate the card. 



If you want a strong heart, start by filling it with God’s Word. You can do this by taking home the card you decorated and putting it in a place where you will see it all the time. You could put it on your bathroom mirror or on your bedside table. Read the verse at least one time every day. This is a great way to get God’s Word inside your heart. Each time you read your verse, you will be following our Big Point, 



**Put In The Good!** Let’s check out a true story from the Bible about a king who did just that. 

As a Christian, you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. God gives us other followers of Jesus to help us stay strong, even when bad things happen. They can pray for you and remind you of God’s words. Other Christians bring good to your heart. That’s why you have a small group! Let’s turn to our small groups and encourage one another to follow our Big Point. 


The goal in this segment is to create a place where kids can openly share and to bring accountability to becoming more like Jesus. Do this by truly listening, responding with love, and showing them what it looks like to be a friend and follower of Jesus. A ball can be used as a tool to signify whose turn it is to respond.


 - Have you ever eaten something that really hurt your stomach? Tell me about it. 
 - Why is it important to put good things in our hearts? **Because when we do, it keeps our hearts healthy and our spirits strong. It helps us face hard things with peace and strength.**
 - What are some good things we can put in our hearts? **God’s word, faith-filled words, being thankful, talking about things God has done, etc**.

We are going to practice putting good things in our hearts. I want you to grab your 3x5 card. Take some time right where you are and whisper it over and over. Then we will pray it all together. 


We have a real enemy who doesn’t want us to have a strong heart. But when we guard our hearts by putting in good things, we are able to stand firm when hard things happen. Guarding our hearts brings us joy and peace! Following our Big Point helps us so much. Remember,
