The Bible Helps Us

This lesson teaches that the Bible is our source of strength and wisdom in every situation. Through Hezekiah’s example, we see how God’s Word brings courage and hope even in the face of fear. The Bible helps us trust God’s promises and reminds us that He is always in control.

Question of the Day: What makes you feel better on a sick day?

WelcomeMaterials: Lab Coat (2), Don’t Make Me Laugh Game

Host and Co-Host enter. This Welcome uses the Don’t Make Me Laugh game for ideas for kids to act out. If you can’t use this game, you can create your own improv scenarios for the kids to perform.

Host

Welcome to the Lab! Have you ever heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine?” It means that laughter can help us feel better.

Co-Host

So, let’s give you a chance to laugh. We’re going to play a game called Don’t Make Me Laugh. In this game, some of you will act out a funny scenario. We’ll see how well each one can make us laugh. You in the audience don’t have to keep a blank face. It’s okay to enjoy the game and laugh.

Before the service, pick out some of the best scenarios from the game. For each child playing, pick a card and read the scenario. Have the child act it out as if playing charades.

Host

We have some pretty funny kids in our church.

Co-Host

When you feel sad or heartbroken, it has the potential to ruin your day or even several days. Thankfully, God has given us a tool to help us.

Host

The Bible can help us when we’re feeling down. It gives us wisdom and encouragement to keep going. So, pay close attention to today’s lesson.

Co-Host

We are going to see what's going on in the lab today. As we do, tell someone nearby the funniest movie or show you’ve ever watched.

Engage 1Materials: Lab Coat (2), Jenga

Host and Co-host enter. This Engage uses a Jenga game. If you have access to a larger version of the Jenga blocks, consider using that one.

Host

Does anyone think that Hans Von Striker will cheat in the Scrabble game?

Co-host

I think Herman was right to suggest Sophia use the Bible to help with her nerves.

Host

That’s what we’re reminded of in today’s Big Point. Let’s choose someone to help us reveal it.

Host and Co-host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-host

Help us count down from three and then read the Big Point.

Host

Let’s all say it together, The Bible Helps Us! The Bible was written for our benefit. The words and stories in the Bible teach us about God. It reminds us of what is true when our world feels a bit shaky.

Co-host

Does anyone enjoy playing Jenga with your family? Someone tell us how the game works.

Allow a child to explain the game.

Host

Let’s play a quick round of the game.

Choose a few volunteers to play the game until the tower falls. Ask the kids to restack the blocks.

Co-host

That tower got a bit shaky at the end. Every time a block was removed, it threatened to destroy the tower.

Host

The Bible helps us. Imagine that these Jenga blocks represent your faith in Jesus. When something bad happens, or a challenge pops up, it can try to chip away at your faith.

Remove a block.

Co-host

But reading the Bible and listening to God’s truth feeds our faith. It builds it up by teaching us what God has done in the past and what He’s promised to continue doing.

Host

It’s like the Bible restores our faith. (Place the block back in the spot where it was removed) That’s why it’s so important to read the Bible daily. It’s a way to strengthen yourself. Let’s see how Sophia’s game is going.

Engage 2Materials: Lab Coat (2), Rope, Scissors

Host and Co-host enter. This Engage demonstrates the cut and restored rope trick. You can find numerous online demonstrations of the trick. This video shows an easy method to perform. youtube.com/watch?v=L_B1R-W44R0 You can purchase cotton rope from a magic store, but any rope should work.

Host

Did you guys catch Hans cheating? Yeah, he had a pocketful of extra tiles. No wonder he was able to spell so many words.

Co-host

Sophia seems discouraged. I’m glad Herman was there to help her.

Host

His advice to her also works for us when we’re feeling down. Remember our Big Point,

Host

The Bible Helps Us! Let’s choose an assistant to reveal the Big Verse from the Bible.

Host and Co-host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-host

Shout it out as we count down from three, and then we will read the verse.

Co-host

The Big Verse comes from 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIrV), “God has breathed life into all of Scripture… It is useful for making our lives whole again.”

Host

Proverbs 4:22 (NIrV) says, “[My words] …are life to those who find them. They are health to a person’s whole body.” The word for health, originally written in the Hebrew language, can mean medicine. God’s wisdom, which we find in the Bible, gives us health. It cures us when we’re not feeling our best.

Co-host

Our Big Verse says that the Bible makes our lives whole again. It’s easy to feel your life is messed up or can’t be fixed whenever something bad happens.

Host

It’s like this rope when I cut it. (Cut the rope) It seems irreversible. But God’s Word can bring healing and health to your spirit when you read it.

Allow the kids to try a couple of times.

Co-host

That’s because it’s full of God’s truth and His Holy Spirit. When we read the Bible, we spend time with God and invite Him to help us. God will speak to our hearts and minds through the Bible, giving us wisdom on how to work through challenging situations.

Host

What seemed impossible becomes possible with God. (Show the restored rope) He takes a broken heart and heals it. He takes a crazy situation and provides wisdom. God’s Word will bring good things to your life. Let’s take a moment to stand and worship God.

Big Story

Optional, play soft instrumental music.

I have no idea what problem you might be dealing with today, but the good news is that God knows. When you read the Bible, God guides you towards scriptures that can help you, Scriptures from the Bible that lift you up and remind you that God is with you. If you feel nervous or upset about something and would like God’s help, I want to invite you to come to the front and pray with one of our adult volunteers. Together, you can ask God for His wisdom and help.

The Bible Helps Us!

Host

I’m sure it had to be scary when Hezekiah faced down the largest, fiercest empire of his day. God’s Word came through Isaiah and encouraged the king when he needed it most.

Co-host

God’s Word can help us, too. You can share the story of King Hezekiah when you do this week’s Big Do.

Host

Find a way to be helpful around your house this week. Maybe help with a chore or clean up around the house. Then, talk about how the Bible is helpful to us.

Co-host

So far, we’ve learned that the Bible is made up of 66 books and was originally written in the languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. There were around 40 different authors who wrote across 1,500 years. Have you ever wondered how you study the Bible to learn? After all, understanding the Bible is important if you want the Bible’s help.

Host

One helpful tip is to think of some simple questions. Hold up five fingers.

Host

Point to each finger as we list them: who, what, when, where, why? The Five “W’s” of understanding the Bible. It’s helpful to think about who wrote that book of the Bible, when they wrote it, what they wrote about, where that book was originally written, and why it can help me now.

Co-host

There are great tools to teach you more about answering those questions. Let’s connect in our Small Groups and talk more about the Bible.

Small Group

Gather the kids into Small Groups and discuss the following.

  • Let’s practice what we learned today about the Bible. (Show the Bible) Let’s think about our Big Verse today. Who wrote 2 Timothy? Even though it’s named “Timothy,” it was written by Paul. He was Timothy’s mentor. We learn that in the Book of Acts. Timothy was the person to whom the letter was written, but Paul probably wanted the whole church to hear the letter, too. Timothy, we learn from the Bible, was left in charge of a church in the city of Ephesus. That city was in the country we now call Turkey. Paul wrote this letter to give Timothy instructions on how to lead the church. That’s a big job. It was probably written near the end of Paul’s life. This book helps us by teaching us to stick to the truth and trust God’s word to help us.

  • What did Hans Von Striker do during the Scrabble game? He cheated. What did Herman suggest to Sophia when she was feeling down? To read God’s Word and allow it to help her.

  • Why was Hezekiah scared when the messenger from Assyria read the scroll? The Assyrians were nasty people with a bad reputation, and Hezekiah worried they would be next. How did God’s Word help Hezekiah? He encouraged him not to give up. God told the king what He would do, and God kept His Word and saved them.

  • What is the Big Do? Find a way to be helpful around your house this week. Maybe help with a chore or clean up around the house. Then, talk about how the Bible is helpful to us.
