The Bible Guides Us

This lesson teaches that the Bible is like a guidebook that helps us stay on the right path. Abraham’s life shows how important it is to listen to God instead of relying on our own ideas. Through stories and activities, kids learn that God’s Word leads to wisdom and better choices.

Question of the Day: Have you ever gotten lost while visiting somewhere new? What happened?

WelcomeMaterials: Lab Coat (2), Interlocking Foam Tiles

Host and Co-host enter. Prior to the Welcome, use the interlocking foam tiles to create a square playing area. They can be the same or different colors. If you don’t have foam tiles, you can use plates, tape, or even pieces of paper. Determine one correct path prior to service. Example: 3 steps forward, 1 step to the right, 1 step forward, 2 to the left, 1 forward, etc. Kids can only move one tile at a time, either forward or to the side. If possible, create a slide or poster that shows the correct path from start to finish. Choose several contestants prior to the service beginning.

Host

Welcome to the Lab! We’re going to see how well these kids can navigate this maze. There’s only one correct path, which they can’t see, so they’ll have to guess which way is correct. You can move one space at a time forward or to the side.

Co-host

You’ll go one at a time, so pay attention to the person in front of you. If they take the wrong step, don’t make that same mistake.

Play the game, allowing each kid a turn to move through the maze. Let them know when they make a wrong step. That child is out, and the next one goes.

Host

That was challenging. Let me show you the correct path.

Host

Let me ask the contestants this question. Would it have been easier to play the game if you could have seen this first?

Co-host

Yeah, that would have kept you from going on the wrong path. You probably would have all finished the maze and reached the end.

Host

Today, we will discover how the Bible leads. Let’s face it: life can feel as confusing as a maze. If you don’t have a good guide, you can easily end up lost.

Co-host

Let’s get ready to check in at the lab but first, tell someone nearby who in your family never gets lost.

Engage 1Materials: Lab Coat (2), Cookies

Host and Co-host enter. Prior to service, make three batches of sugar cookies. One batch follows a recipe exactly. Make one batch with no sugar and another, leaving out baking powder and eggs.

Host

Sounds like Rusty’s inventions haven’t been very well thought out. I’m surprised the flying turkey didn’t take out a wall.

Co-host

He needs to slow down and learn some things before he creates a bigger disaster.

Host

That reminds me of today’s Big Point. Let’s choose someone to help us reveal it.

Host and Co-host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-host

We are going to count down from three and then you get to read the Big Point.

Host

Let’s all say it together, The Bible Guides Us! The Bible is not an ordinary book. It’s a book that comes from God. He inspired people to write exactly what He wanted us to know about Him. Taking time to read and understand the Bible helps you know how to make the right choices.

Co-host

Earlier, we made some cookies. Does anyone have a favorite cookie?

Allow for answers.

Host

To bake any kind of treat, you must follow a recipe precisely. We baked three different batches of cookies. Would anyone like to taste-test these cookies?

Bring up some volunteers to try each cookie.

Co-host

It looks like you didn’t enjoy some of those cookies. Why not? (Allow for answers) There might be a good reason why you didn’t like some of them. For one batch of cookies, we followed the recipe exactly. Here it is.

Host

Look at all of those ingredients. Each one of them matters if you want a tasty cookie. The problem is that in some of these cookies, we left out the sugar. Other cookies are missing the baking powder and eggs. That’s why the cookies are so flat. Not following the guide, our recipe created a “treat” no one would want.

Co-host

If we ignore the Bible and do whatever we want to do, then we create problems for ourselves. The Bible is the book we read to know what is true, but knowing is only the first step. The next step is DOING what God says in His Word. Let’s see what Rusty is up to now.

Engage 2Materials: Lab Coat (2), Soccer Ball

Host and Co-host enter.

Host

I definitely would not want to use Rusty’s microphone to sing.

Co-host

Me, neither. Wow, he really needs to do some reading and safe experimentation before he gets others to use his inventions.

Host

We need the Bible just as much to help us make wise choices. Remember our Big Point,

Host

The Bible Guides Us! Let’s choose an assistant to reveal the Big Verse from the Bible.

Host and Co-host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-host

We will all count down from three, and then we will read the verse.

Co-host

The Big Verse comes from 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIrV), “God has breathed life into all of Scripture…It is useful for correcting our mistakes.”

Host

We may not always like being corrected, but without correction, we would just keep making the same mistakes. Correction is good. Let’s show you an example from sports.

Co-host

Has anyone here never played on a soccer team?

Choose a couple of kids who haven’t played soccer.

Host

Let’s see if you can juggle the ball in the air from knee to knee.

Allow the kids to try a couple of times.

Co-host

If we left you alone to do this, you might get a bit better, but odds are you would keep struggling. A soccer coach wouldn’t let you fail over and over. He or she would teach you how to do it. Let’s help our friends by going over some tips from experienced coaches.

Show the slide and demonstrate each step. Then, have the kids attempt again. Review where they messed up, referencing the slide, and have them try again. If you are unfamiliar with juggling, search the web for tips. This site is helpful. wikihow.com/Juggle-a-Soccer-Ball If you would like more of a challenge, you can have the kids juggle with their feet.

Steps:

Lift your knee so your thigh is flat for the ball to bounce on.

Hold the ball above your knee.

Drop the ball and bounce it with your knee back to your hands.

Drop the ball and bounce it between your knees.

Host

You learned a new skill because you listened to instructions, tried, and then listened to corrections. The more we are willing to listen to God’s direction and correction in the Bible, the better we’ll be able to serve God and live a life that pleases Him. Let’s take a moment to stand and worship God.

Big Story

Optional, play soft instrumental music.

Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. You can use the Bible to help you as you pray. Scriptures can be turned into prayers. Let’s turn our Big Verse into a prayer. Repeat after me. “Jesus, I believe You inspired the Bible. Help me to listen to it and correct my mistakes. Amen.” Let’s repeat that prayer again. (Repeat 2x) I’m thankful we have God’s Word to help us learn and grow as His followers.

Let’s say the Big Point again,

Co-host

The Bible Guides Us!

Host

Abraham didn’t listen to God and made a big mistake, one that caused many problems. Thankfully, he corrected his mistake by listening to God’s words to him.

Co-host

You can share the story of Abraham’s mistake and wise choices when you do this week’s Big Do.

Host

Use an online map or GPS to guide you somewhere fun like a park, restaurant or store. Talk with your family about how God guides us.

Co-host

Last week, we learned that the Bible is made up of 66 smaller books. Did you know that the Bible wasn’t written in English? It was written in the languages of the people who first read it.

Co-host

The three original languages were Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

Host

The Bible was written by many different authors, approximately 40.

Host

The books of the Bible were written at different times throughout 1500 years. The books were written to people who lived in Israel, Persia, and throughout the Roman Empire. What’s amazing is that all of these different books and authors don’t conflict with each other. Instead, they tell one big story of God’s love and how He saved us.

Co-host

Reading your Bible will help you learn as it corrects your mistakes. You can read along with your parents, too. Let’s connect in our Small Groups and discover more.

Small Group

Gather the kids into Small Groups and discuss the following.

  • Let’s practice finding a verse in the Bible. (Show the Bible) Remember, the books in our Bible have chapters and verses to make it easier to find things. We can take turns finding different scriptures. Ex: 2 Timothy 3:16, Genesis 15:5, Psalm 119:105
  • Rusty’s inventions did not work out well. Which one do you think was the worst? Why was he having a hard time creating something? Because he wasn’t listening to anyone or learning from mistakes. He just kept creating things. Why did that keep him from being successful? He never learned how to do things correctly. He couldn’t get better.
  • What was Abraham’s mistake? Abraham listened to his wife’s advice instead of God’s word. When Abraham followed God’s plan, did things go better? Yes How did God keep His promise to Abraham? He made Abraham’s family large
  • What is this week’s Big Do? Use an online map or GPS to guide you somewhere fun like a park, restaurant or store. Talk with your family about how God guides us.
