Large Group Instructions
Welcome segment Prep: This segment uses a drum major hat and baton, but it isn’t essential if you don’t have one in your inventory. You may be able to borrow them from your local high school band.
Host and Co-host enter, dressed in overalls.
Host
Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I’m so glad that you came to visit.
Co-Host
Do you know what kind of hat I’m wearing? You might not have seen one like this before. (Pause) It’s a hat that people wear who are in a marching band. Marching bands play instruments and march at the same time! Let’s stand and pretend that we are in a marching band. I’ll use my baton to lead the band.
Pretend to march as a marching band. Have the kids march in place, pretend to play different instruments, turn, and look in different directions, etc.
Host
You can sit down. That was fun, pretending to be in a marching band. Today we are going to hear a true story about a king who marched in a parade.
Co-Host
Their parade was all about praising God. I bet that was a fun parade to watch.
Host
We will learn all about that king soon but first, say a big, “Choo-choo!”
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
Engineer Courtney is embarrassed to sing the song she’s learning at church. Do you think she should feel embarrassed about praising God?
Host
No, praising God is a great thing to do. I think we should encourage our friend, Engineer Courtney, to practice our Big Point. Let’s help by saying it together,
Host
I Won’t Stop Praising God!
Co-Host
We don’t ever want to stop praising God. Praising doesn’t just mean singing. We praise God when we think about how good God is and all the Bible says about Him.
Host
Let’s stand up and play a game. For this one, you’ll get to move your muscles. I’ll tell you something to do, like hop, or walk in place, or move your arms. Your job is to keep doing it until I say, “Stop.” If you hear anyone but me say stop, don’t stop!
Give the kids simple movements to follow. As the kids perform the actions, have different people in the room tell them to stop, such as the Co-Host or other adult/teen volunteers.
Co-Host
Good job, Jr. Conductors, you can sit on your pockets. It was hard not to stop when other people said, “Stop,” but you listened to the right person and kept going.
Host
If someone tells us not to thank God or not to praise Him, should we listen to them and stop?
Co-Host
No! But it wouldn’t be respectful to sing loudly all the time. I don’t think our teachers or parents would like that, but we can always quietly tell God, “Thank you.” Then, when it is time to sing, we can praise God with lots of energy.
Host
Let’s see if Engineer Courtney will feel differently after hearing the Big Point.
Host and Co-Host enter. If you don’t have smiley face balloons, then draw a face on a small balloon.
Co-Host
Inspector Nigel is really good at hiding, but I’m glad that he helped Engineer Courtney learn that praising God is not something she needs to hide.
Host
He helped her learn why it’s good to follow the Big Point. Let’s say it together,
Host
I Won’t Stop Praising God!
Co-Host
Inspector Nigel shared a verse from the Bible.
Co-Host
Psalm 150:6 (NIrV) says, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” Let’s all take a deep breath in (breathe in). Blow all of the air out!
Host
Look, we all have breath. That means we can all praise God. Let’s blow up these balloons using our breath.
Bring on stage a few older kids from the class. Hand each one a balloon with the straw attached. If you have enough volunteers, you may involve a couple of them as well.
Co-Host
Let’s see what is on the balloons when we blow them up.
The Host, Co-Host, and volunteers blow up the balloons. Have them pinch the end of the balloon. Show the smiley faces to the kids.
Host
Look at those smiles. When we use our breath to praise God, it brings smiles to our faces. That’s because praising God is a joyful thing to do. Show me big smiles. Let’s let our balloons go on the count of three. 1…2…3.
Let the balloons fly around.
Co-Host
That breath helped the balloons move all around. Our breath helps us worship God, too, with lots of fun and movement. In a moment we will hear about a king who used his breath to move and dance as he praised God. Let’s stand and use our breath to worship God now.
Play optional soft instrumental music
Jr. Conductors, let’s take a moment to thank God for all He has done for us. Quietly, at your seat, tell God some things you are thankful for. Don’t stop until I say, “Stop.” (Pause) Good job. Let’s follow King David’s example and praise God with all our hearts.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
I’m glad Engineer Courtney decided to praise God like King David. She even invited Conductor Carl to join the choir!
Host
King David made a wise choice when he praised God even though his wife, the queen, didn’t like his choice. King David knew that praising God was more important.
Co-Host
You can tell your family about King David and his dancing when you do the Big Do this week.
Co-Host
Have a family dance contest! See who can dance the silliest, the longest, or who can dance the best.
Host
I have an idea. Let’s play a freeze dance game right now. When you hear the music, dance with lots of energy, but when the music stops, freeze and not move a muscle.
Co-Host
While you’re frozen, we’ll listen to the Big Point. You can’t start dancing again until the Big Point ends and the music starts playing. Let’s see if you can listen and freeze at just the right time.
Play the track. Intermittently, the dance music will play and then it will stop and play the Big Point. Help the kids remember to freeze and listen to the Big Point, and then dance when the music begins again. You can fade out the video at any point.
Host
You did a great job! I hope you have lots of fun teaching your family the Big Point.
