Countdown From 10

Music suggestions for this lesson include:

  • Welcome Segment: Various animal sound effects

  • Big Story: Soft instrumental music

  • Big Review: Game music

Rules
WelcomeMaterials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Earmuffs

Host and Co-Host enter. The Co-Host is wearing large earmuffs or headphone.

Host Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! (Points to the Co-Host’s earmuffs) It’s not cold in here. That seems like an odd thing to wear.

Co-Host A bear! Where?! Run away.

Co-Host runs around the stage.

Host Jr. Conductors, did I say, “Bear?” No. I said, “Wear.”

Co-Host Hair? I have (color) hair. What color hair do you have, Jr. Conductors?

Host It seems like our friend is having trouble hearing. Why do you think he/she can’t hear me? (Pause) I think it’s those earmuffs. Let’s play a listening game. I’m going to play animal sounds. See if you can guess which animal makes that sound.

Play various animal sound effects. The Co-Host should guess all the wrong animals.

Co-Host I was really good at that game.

Host Jr. Conductors, do you think our friend is right?

Co-Host I do not bite. That’s rude. I only follow the rules.

(Co-Host exits.)

Host I think our friend has a lot to learn about listening. Thankfully that’s exactly what we’re discovering in today’s Big Point. If you are ready to help him/her, say, “Choo-choo!”

Engage 1Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Earmuffs

Host and Co-Host enter.

Host Do you think Engineer Courtney has to build a submarine all by herself, or can she ask for help? (Pause) I agree. It’s a wise choice to ask.

Co-Host No, this isn’t a mask. These are called earmuffs.

(Host takes off the earmuffs.)

Host You aren’t listening very well. You keep mixing up all the words I say because you are wearing these earmuffs.

Co-Host I’m wearing them because I don’t want to listen to anyone else. I want to do everything by myself.

Host That’s what Engineer Courtney thinks, but we learned something different in our Big Point. Let’s practice it again, Jr. Conductors.

Host Listen To Wise People!

Co-Host No, wise people do everything by themselves.

Host That’s not what the Bible says. Listening is good. Let’s play a listening game. It’s a fun game called Simon Says. You must do what Simon says to do. If I say, “Simon says hop up and down,” should you do it? Yes. If I say, “Wave your arms,” don’t do it. Only do the things that Simon says to do.

Co-Host I’ll be good at this game, but I should probably wear my earmuffs.

Play the game. Go slow so that it’s easy for the kids to follow the commands. The Co-Host should fail to follow Simon’s commands but do the things that Simon doesn’t say to do.

Co-Host Did I win?

Host Jr. Conductors, did our friend play the game well? (Pause) No, you didn’t because you weren’t listening.

Co-Host It sounds like listening is important.

Host God wants us to listen to others because that’s how we learn things. It’s okay if you don’t know everything. God gives us helpers to teach us. Let’s see if Engineer Courtney can find a helper to teach her how to build a submarine.

Engage 2Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Earmuffs, Blindfold, Target

Host and Co-Host enter.

Host Do you think that Engineer Courtney made a wise choice by asking Professor Beaker for help? (Pause) She followed our Big Point.

Host Listen To Wise People!

Co-Host I guess I didn’t make a wise choice when I wore my earmuffs and didn’t listen. Engineer Kelly’s verse from the Bible helped me learn that.

Co-Host Proverbs 12:15 (NIrV) says, “Those who are wise listen to advice.”

Host That’s true, but not everyone tells us wise things to do. We want to learn to listen to people who share wise words.

Co-Host That’s why it was wise to ask Professor Beaker to help build a submarine.

Host That’s right. He knows how to build things like rockets and boats that travel under water.

Co-Host We should listen to people who say the same kinds of things that we hear God tell us in the Bible.

Host That’s right! Let’s show you what it looks like when we listen to wise and unwise people. I’m going to set up a target on stage. (The target can be an actual target or any item) You will wear this blindfold.

Co-Host I can’t see. How can I find the target?

Host Your fellow engineers will help you. The only problem is that they are going to close their eyes, too. Listen and follow what they say.

Have the adult/teen volunteers close their eyes and try to guide the Co-Host to the target.

Co-Host I give up. I can’t find it.

Host That’s what happens when we listen to unwise people. They can’t tell us the right things to do. Let’s change something now and have the Jr. Conductors help you. This time, they will keep their eyes open.

Have the kids guide the Co-Host to the target by yelling directions.

Co-Host I found it! Thanks, Jr. Conductors!

Host They were like wise people. The Jr. Conductors could tell you exactly where to go. That’s why it’s important to listen to the wise people God gives us to help us. Let’s stand and worship God.

Big Story

Play optional soft instrumental music

Let’s bow our heads, close our eyes, and take a moment to pray our Big Verse. That means we are going to repeat the Big Verse and remind ourselves of what God teaches us in the Bible. Proverbs 12:15 says, “Those who are wise listen to advice.” So, repeat after me and say, “I am wise and listen to advice.” (Repeat two times) Now I will use that verse to pray for all of us. (Pray)

Engage 3Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

Host enters.

Host Did you enjoy traveling under the water with Engineer Courtney? Was the shark really scary? It’s a good thing she built a submarine to keep her safe. She wouldn’t have done it if she hadn’t followed our Big Point. Let’s practice it again,

Host Listen To Wise People!

Co-Host I wish that King Rehoboam had learned the Big Point. He didn’t listen to wise people and made a big mess.

Host Yeah, he listened to his friends who weren’t wise. We can talk about the wise people we know when we do the Big Do.

Co-Host The Big Do is to talk to your family about people you know who are wise. See if you can decide why they are good people to listen to.

Host Let’s look at some pictures of people we might meet and decide if they are wise or unwise people.

Ask the kids to give a thumbs up if the person is wise or a thumbs down if the person doesn’t seem wise. Explain why that person might or might not be wise.

Co-Host I’m thankful for wise people who help us.

Host Me, too. God is so kind to give us lots of help. I think we should practice the Big Point again.

  • Did the people ask King Rehoboam to let them rest or to make them work harder? Let them rest. They had worked really hard. Let’s stand up and pretend to work hard cleaning up the room. Let’s pick up the toys and then sweep the floor. Now let’s all sit down and pretend to take a nap. After we finish our work is a great time to rest.

  • I’m going to whisper different words. Let’s see if you can use your listening ears to hear what I’m saying. (Whisper different words) Did King Rehoboam listen to the wise advisors or to his friends? Friends Did King Rehoboam make a wise or unwise choice? Unwise
