Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors!

Co-host

Would you like to play a game? Let’s choose a friend to come onstage and play.

Choose a child volunteer.

Host

In this game, (Co-host) will bounce the ball to our friend, and I want you to bounce it back. Let’s see how many times we can bounce it back and forth.

Bounce the ball back and forth and have the kids in the audience count how many times in a row you successfully bounce it.

Co-host

You did a great job of catching and tossing the ball. You gave it and received it. That’s what we’re going to talk about today. Forgiveness is something we give and receive.

Host

Jesus taught us how important it is to say, “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you.” To get started, let’s stand and sing. As you do, say, “Choo-choo!”

Engage 1Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

Host and Co-host enter. Have the ingredients set on a table on stage before you begin.

Host

Did Engineer Courtney and Engineer Kelly make a wrong choice?

Co-host

They sure did. I can’t believe that Conductor Carl’s office is full of water. Let’s move our arms like we’re swimming underwater. (Pretend to swim) Now, use your hands to make fins next to your face and make a face like a goldfish. (Make a fish face)

Host

I’m thankful that Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer what to do when we make a wrong choice.

Co-host

Let’s stand and practice our Big Point to find out what Jesus said to do. Ask Forgiveness And Forgive!

Host

What two special words do we say when we do the wrong thing? (Allow for answers) That’s right, we say “I’m sorry.” Will Jesus forgive us when we say that?

Co-host

Let’s think of some choices we might make and think about that.

Show the slides and ask the kids what is happening in the picture. Ask them if Jesus would forgive us if we made that choice. Talk about what we should do in each situation if we make the wrong choice.

Grab a toy from a friend

Stay up past our bedtime

Refuse to listen to our teacher

Draw on the wall

Throw a fit for not getting our way

Host

Sometimes we make the wrong choices. When we do, we should tell God that we’re sorry. Let’s say that together with a motion. Say, “I’m sorry.”

(Repeat the phrase with the ASL motion)

Co-host

We do that because bad choices make it hard to be God’s friend. It’s also wise to tell our mommy and daddy, teacher, or friend, “I’m sorry” when we do something wrong. Let’s say it again.

Repeat the phrase with the ASL motion)

Host

I hope Engineer Courtney and Engineer Kelly share the kindness that Conductor Carl showed to them.

Engage 2Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Angry Face Balloon, Smiley Face Balloon

Host and Co-host enter.

Host

Are you surprised that Engineer Courtney and Engineer Kelly wouldn’t forgive Chef Bananas? Was his mistake as bad as when they flooded Conductor Carl’s office? No, it wasn’t. They really need to hear our Big Point again. Ask Forgiveness And Forgive!

Co-host

Ms. Meagan shared what Jesus taught us to pray in the Bible. Matthew 6:12 (NIrV), “And forgive us our sins, just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us.”

Host

Jesus wants us to say I’m sorry and forgive others when they say sorry. When we won’t forgive someone, it makes us look like this. Can you pretend to blow up a balloon?

Blow up the angry face balloon. If you can’t find one, then just draw a face on a regular latex balloon.

Co-host

What kind of face do you see? It does look angry. Can you make a face that looks angrier than this balloon? (Pause) Oh my, you look so mad. What do you think would happen if we kept blowing up the balloon?

Host

You’re right, it would pop. If we don’t forgive, we’ll become so angry that it hurts us. But when we forgive, guess what happens? It lets out all of that anger. Do you want to see what happens to the balloon when I let it go?

Let the balloon go, allowing it to fly across the stage.

Co-host

When we ask for forgiveness and forgive, it helps us to choose this kind of attitude. Let’s blow up another balloon together.

Blow up the smiley face balloon. If one is not available, draw a smile on a regular balloon.

Host

What does that face look like? (Allow for answers) Can you smile that big? (Pause) Forgiving others helps us choose to be joyful.

Co-host

In just a moment, we’ll hear a story that Jesus told about someone who asked forgiveness, but listen to hear if he also forgave. Let’s stand and sing a song to God.

Big StoryMaterials: Crown, Bags of Gold, Chair

Optional, play soft instrumental music.

Storyteller

Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. Jr. Conductors, think about someone who made you mad this week. Maybe someone took your toy, or called you a name, or even pushed you. Instead of being angry at them, can you forgive them? If you can do that, quietly say, “I forgive,” and say their name. (Pause) Now, let’s pray and thank God for being so kind to forgive us. (Pray)

Engage 3Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Dirty Shirt, Clean Shirt

Host

Was Conductor Carl pleased that Engineer Courtney and Engineer Kelly didn’t want to forgive Chef Bananas? (Pause) No, he wasn’t. He wanted them to follow our Big Point , Ask Forgiveness And Forgive!

Co-host

The servant in Jesus’ story did not make a good choice when he didn’t forgive. The king was kind to him, but he wouldn’t be kind to his fellow servants. You can share that story when you do the Big Do.

Host

This week’s Big Do is to think of one person in your family that you need to forgive and do it. Then, think of one person you need to ask to forgive you and ask them.

Co-host

Do you ever go outside and play? (Allow for answers) What kinds of games do you play? (Allow for answers) Do you ever get dirty when you play outside? Yes, sometimes our clothes can get really dirty. (Show the dirty shirt) Let’s hold our noses and pretend that this dirty shirt does not smell good.

Host

Would you want to walk around all day long wearing a dirty, smelly shirt? What about going to sleep in one? That would be awful. Wouldn’t it be better to wear a clean, nice-smelling shirt to bed? (Show the clean shirt)

Co-host

Making wrong choices makes you feel bad. It’s like getting dirt all over you. When we don’t ask for forgiveness, it’s like walking around all day with that mess. Asking forgiveness is like asking God to clean all that bad stuff off of you.

Host

Let’s sniff in the air and pretend to smell something really clean and lovely. (Sniff) It’s a good choice to always follow our Big Point. Ask Forgiveness And Forgive!

Big Review

Hmm, did our Big Point say Ask Forgiveness And Forgive or Never Say Sorry?

Let’s pretend to count our coins. (Pretend to count ten coins) In Jesus’ story, did the servant owe the king a little bit of money or a lot of money? Lots Was the king mean to him, or did he forgive him at first? Forgave him
