Large Group Instructions
Host and Co-Host enter dressed in overalls. The Co-Host is reading a book.
Host Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors!
Co-Host Hey! Can you wait just one minute while I finish my book? I want to see how it ends.
Host I guess we can we wait just a moment. Let’s put our hands in our lap and sit patiently while our friend reads.
Lead the kids in patiently waiting with a smile.
Co-Host (Reading) “I do so like green eggs and ham! Thank you! Thank you, Sam-I-am!” That was surprising. I thought that Sam’s friend didn’t like green eggs and ham. Would you ever eat green eggs and ham?
Host That doesn’t sound very yummy to me. You read the whole book, and we discovered that Sam’s friend does like green eggs and ham. We can learn things when we read books.
Co-Host Are books only about made-up stories like “Green Eggs and Ham?”
Host No, today we’re going to learn about the Bible. It’s full of true stories about real people. When we read the Bible, we can learn about God. I can’t wait to share the Big Point with you. Give us a big, “Choo-choo!”
Host and Co-Host enter. This Engage uses a microphone. If your group is small enough for everyone to hear, then you could substitute with a foam or inflatable microphone to add some fun.
Co-Host The menu board at Chef Bananas’ cake shop didn’t talk about God at all. It only talked about delicious food. What’s your favorite kind of cake? I like chocolate cake.
Host I don’t think they’ll solve Conductor Carl’s scavenger hunt at Chef Bananas cake shop. Our Big Point was much more helpful. Let’s stand and practice the Big Point again,
Host The Bible Tells Me Who God Is!
Co-Host I like to read my Bible. Do you ever read the Bible with your family? The Bible tells us true things about God. Host It sure does. Let’s practice sharing true things about ourselves. I’ll start by telling you my name. My name is Engineer (Host’s name) and I was born in (City).
Co-Host Now we know what city our friend was born in. My name is Engineer (Co-Host’s name) and my favorite game to play is (Game).
Host Isn’t it fun to know a game our friend likes to play? Now we want to know about you guys! We’re going to let some of you share as we ask questions.
Ask several of the kids questions such as their name, favorite color, favorite food, favorite show, etc. Use the microphone to interview them or if you have a small group, pass the inflatable microphone around the group to designate who should speak.
Co-Host I know so many fun things about the Jr. Conductors now.
Host Me, too! And we can learn more about who God is when we read the Bible. The Bible is the story of God and how He created us and loves us.
Co-Host Do you think we could learn about what God likes from the Bible, too?
Host We sure can! Let’s see if our friends at the Train Station will find the Bible. Maybe you guys can help them out.
Host and Co-Host enter. This Engage uses a book. You can choose one that is about animals or make a slipcover for any book you find and write “Animals” on the cover.
Co-Host I think that going to the library was a great idea. Have any of you ever been to the library before? Lionel learned that you have to be quiet in the library. Turn to a friend and say, “Shh!”
Host Our friends at the Train Station made a wise choice when they looked in the Bible. Do you think that they found the answer to Conductor Carl’s scavenger hunt? I do. Let’s practice singing the Big Point again,
Host The Bible Tells Me Who God Is!
Co-Host I like the verse they found in the Bible.
Co-Host 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIrV) says, “God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true.”
Host I have a book that teaches me true things. It’s about animals. Do you like to learn about animals? Let’s learn about giraffes. I’ll show you some pictures from the book. Giraffes have long necks and eat leaves from tall trees.
Host Let’s pretend to stretch our necks up high, like a giraffe.
Co-Host If someone told you that giraffes are pink with purple polka dots and ate fish for dinner, would you think that was true? (Pause) No, that’s not true, but the animal book did teach us true things about giraffes.
Host Look, the book also teaches us about camels. Camels have a hump, or sometimes two, that help them store the food and water they need as they travel through the desert. Round your back like a camel hump.
Co-Host If someone told you that camels are green, live in the swamp, and eat flies, would that be true? (Pause) No, I’m glad the animal book taught us what is true about camels.
Host Just like my book taught us about animals, the Bible teaches us what is true about God. Each time we read the Bible, we become better prepared to know if someone says something untrue about God. It’s important to know who God is.
Co-Host That’s true! Before we hear God’s story from the Bible, let’s stand and sing some true words to God.
Optional, play soft instrumental music.
It’s always good to hear God’s wonderful story and to be reminded of how much He loves us. It’s also a wise idea to thank God. He is so kind to us. One way we can show God our thanks is by worshipping Him. We can worship in lots of ways. One fun way to worship is by singing. We are going to do that right after we visit with our friends at the station.
Host and Co-Host enter. Prior to the Engage, place a slip of paper in each balloon and blow them up, but don’t tie them. Use a binder clip to keep the air from escaping.
Co-Host That was a fun scavenger hunt. I’m glad that our friends worked together to find the right book, the Bible.
Host They learned our Big Point, too. Let’s all practice it again,
Host The Bible Tells Me Who God Is!
Co-Host Our Big Story helped me understand so much more about God. It makes me feel good to know how much God loves me.
Host You can tell your family about what you learned from the Bible when you do the Big Do this week.
Host Make a list of things that you know are true about God. If you get stuck or don’t know what to write, look in the Bible for help.
Co-Host Let’s play a game and discover some more true things about God. We have chosen four Jr. Conductors to help us. In each of these balloons is a slip of paper that tells us something true about God. The challenge is to get the papers out.
Host We’re going to let the air out of the balloons and watch where they land. When we do, what do you think will happen? Once the balloons land, we will take turns going to get them.
Choose kids to play the game. Choose a child to be “it” and release the air from a balloon. Take out the slip of paper and read it. Continue until you’ve read them all. Slips of Paper: Strong, Loving, Wise, Friendly
Host All these things we read are true words about God. Let’s say our Big Point once more,
Did our Big Point say The Bible Tells Me Who God Is Not or The Bible Tells Me Who God Is?
I spy something… (Play I Spy with different objects found in the room) Who went on a scavenger hunt today? Engineer Courtney, Engineer Kelly, Farmer Faith, Lionel What were they looking for? The Bible
Take in a big breath. Hold it. Hold it. Let it out. Take in a tiny breath. Hold it. Let it out. 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIrV), “God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is ____
- True
- Untrue
Pretend to paint a picture. What should we paint? (Pause) What do we need in order to paint? Right, a paintbrush. (Pretend to paint) Look at your creation. In the Big Story, we learned that who created the world? God did God do it because He loves us or doesn’t like us? He loves us
I’m going to say something, and you tell me if it is true or not true. The sky is made of chocolate. Not true Lions live in the ocean. Not true God loves you. True If you want to know what is true about God, which book should you read? Bible Should you believe something about God that does not agree with what we read about in the Bible? No
What did Conductor Carl tell us to do in the Big Do? Make a list of things that you know are true about God, and if you get stuck look in the Bible for help.
