Series Note

Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Elementary lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!

Venue Ideas

Lesson 5 (Super Mario Bros): Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.

Games: Provide a variety of board games and video games for kids to pick and play.

PJ and Movie Night: Wear pajamas and watch the movie while enjoying a treat.

Field Day: Have field day games outside. Split the kids into groups and have them compete in relay races, tug of war, and similar types of games.

Welcome

Host

Welcome to Summer To The Max at the Movies! Are you excited for Super Mario Bros. week?!

Engage 1Materials: Super Mario Hat (2)

Co-host

I like playing the video game and watching the movie. When Mario eats the mushroom does he shrink or grow tall? (Allow for answers) That’s right, he becomes tall. Stretch your arms up high to make yourself tall.

Host

Let’s pretend to be Mario inside of the video game.

Co-host

How can we do that?

Host

We’ll watch the game on the video and pretend to do all of the things that Mario does. We’ll jump when he jumps and run when he runs.

Co-host

Let’s make sure we don’t quit until we’ve finished.

Have the kids stand and follow the action on the screen. It is a first person view of a Super Mario level. Encourage the kids to jump, run in place, etc. as they follow the level to the end.

Co-host

Good job! You can sit down. That wasn’t easy to keep going, but I’m glad you did.

Host

Let’s sing today’s Big Point together and find out what we’re going to learn in today’s lesson. Put your hand next to your ear.

I Don’t Have To Give Up!

Co-host

Even when things don’t go our way, we don’t have to stop following Jesus. We can still obey Jesus and do what He tells us to do.

Host

By not quitting, we can be God’s big helper. That means we can help lots and lots of people.

Co-host

I’m glad we don’t have to give up.

Movie Moment

There is a scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie where Mario trains on an obstacle course that Princess Peach completes with ease. Mario struggles, fails over and over, but keeps trying—and eventually pushes through and finishes the course. If your church has the proper licensing you may choose to show this clip. If you cannot show the clip, simply summarize the moment or describe it to the kids.

Mario had such a hard time finishing that course. I sure am glad that he didn’t quit.

Host

That’s why he was able to save everyone by stopping that mean Bowser. Mario was a good example of our Big Point. Let’s sing it again,

Host

I Don’t Have To Give Up!

Co-host

Let’s see what the Bible says in our Big Verse.

Co-host

James 1:3 (NIrV), “Your faith will be tested. You know that when this happens it will produce in you the strength to continue.”

Host

That verse means that when something bad happens, it doesn’t have to make us stop. Instead, God will help us get stronger so that we can keep going.

Co-host

I have an idea to help us learn more about the verse. We’re going to play a matching game. A friend will turn over a card and then try to find a match. We have to try to find and match each one.

Set up matching game with limited number of matches based on your allotted time. Have the kids take turns trying to match the cards. After the first couple of missed matches stop for a moment.

Host

It’s hard to find all of the matches.

Co-host

It kind of makes me feel like giving up and stopping the game.

Host

We don’t have to do that. Each time we turn over two cards we’re learning where to find all the pictures. Each time we miss one, we’re actually getting closer to winning. Soon we’ll know where they all are so we can find all of the matches.

Co-host

Let’s keep going!

Finish the game.

Host

You did such a great job finding the matches. Just like we got better each time we looked at the cards, we grow stronger even when bad things happen. That’s because God helps us and makes us strong. Let’s listen to a story about Peter and how he and his friend didn’t give up.

Big Story

Host

Peter’s friend didn’t give up praying for him. They believed that God could help him. I’m glad that they didn’t. Let’s help our friends right now just like we heard in the story. Let’s pray for a friend. Everyone quietly ask God to help the friend sitting next to you. (Pause) Wow, you prayed for someone. That’s being like Jesus. Now, I’ll pray for all of us. (Pray)

Sometimes bad things will happen. People might even be mean like the king in our story. I’m glad that God helps us stay strong and not quit. Let’s practice our Big Point. Put your hand to your ear and sing it again.

You can tell your family what you learned about Peter when you do the Big Do this week.

Pick a job to do with your family, maybe a tough job like cleaning up outside. Even though it’s going to be hot, don’t quit until it’s finished.
