I Can Treat Others Well

Series Note
Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Elementary lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!
Venue Ideas:
Lesson 7 (Up): Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.
Serve Sunday: Give the kids an opportunity to serve others. The best option is to choose a serving project that matches your giving project. Check with the organization or missionary and ask if there are any projects your kids can complete in serves.
Passport to the World: Create stations in classrooms or around your auditorium highlighting missionaries and/or missions’ organizations your church supports. Show pictures, discuss the ministries, and allow the kids to try some food or treats from that country.

Welcome to Summer To The Max at the Movies! This week is all about the movie, Up! That’s a fun movie about a big adventure in a house that floats in the sky.
Co-host
Do you know what made the house float? (Pause) A big bundle of balloons!
Host
Let’s play a game with some balloons like we saw in the movie. In this game, we’re going to have some friends try to keep their balloon floating in the air while we all count to ten.
Choose 2-3 kids to play the game. Hand them each a balloon and show them how to bounce it in the air with their hands. Have the kids attempt to do that while the Host and kids count. As the game is played, the Co-host will snatch all of the balloons away from the kids.
Host
Did you see what happened? Was that kind? No, not at all.
Co-host
I didn’t have a balloon and the boys and girls did have balloons. I just thought that I could take them and have fun.
Host
Do you remember that we are learning about lots of good things that we add to our lives? Those good things help us follow Jesus better.
Co-host
Yes, I remember that.
Host
One of the many good things we should add is kindness. Do you think it’s kind to snatch away a toy or balloon from a friend? (Pause) You’re right. That isn’t kind.
Co-host
Would it be kind if I helped them play the game instead of taking the balloon? (Pause) That does sound much better. Let’s play again.
Optional, play movie theme music. Play the game. The Co-host will help the kids keep the balloons afloat.
Host
You did such a good job of showing kindness. Let’s sing today’s Big Point together to find out how we can show kindness. Put your hand next to your ear.
I Can Treat Others Well!
Co-host
Treating others well means that we want to do things that help them instead of hurt them. Jesus is kind, so we should do what He does.
Host
We can be kind to anyone, but it’s especially important to be kind to our friends, family, and the people at church. We should never try to hurt them or be mean to them.
Co-host
I sure am glad that Jesus is kind.
Movie Moment
There is a scene in the movie Up where Russell shows up at Carl’s door asking if he needs help for his Wilderness Explorer badge. Carl says no, but Russell doesn’t give up—he sticks around, determined to help however he can. If your church has the proper licensing you may choose to show this clip. If you cannot show the clip, simply summarize the moment or describe it to the kids.

Russell was excited to help, and he did a good job in the movie. He even saved the special bird, Kevin. You can be a big helper just like him.

Jesus helps us when we choose to be kind. He gives us power to keep making that wise choice and helps us think of ways to show kindness. Let’s sing our Big Point again,

Let’s see what the Bible says about kindness in our Big Verse.
Co-host
1 John 4:21 (NIrV), “Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”
Host
Should we love God? Everyone, shake your head “yes.” Of course we should love God. He has been kind and loving to us. So if we love God, then we must also love our brother and sister.
Co-host
Do we only love our brother and sister?
Host
That verse doesn’t just mean our brothers and sisters. We should love them. But when our Big Verse says, “brothers and sisters” it also means our friends, family, and all of the Christians who follow Jesus.
Co-host
I have an idea. Let’s play a smile game. We have a balloon with a smiley face on it. We’re going to pass the balloon all around the room. When the music stops, whoever’s holding the balloon has to say something kind about one of our friends here.
Host
Let’s see if our kind words can make our friends smile.
Optional, play movie theme music. Play the game. Pass the balloon back and forth among the kids. Begin by passing it to the adult volunteers in the room so they can demonstrate speaking something kind.
Host
That was fun. I like treating our friends well.
Co-host
Let’s see what happened to someone who had been mean to Christians wanted to join the group. Do you think Peter showed him kindness? Let’s see.
Host
I’m glad that Peter and his friends showed kindness to Saul and welcomed him to the group. That reminds us to show kindness to all of our friends here at church. Let’s show some kindness now by praying for our friends. Place your hand gently on the shoulder of the boy or girl sitting next to you. Let’s pray this prayer. “Dear God, help this person and help me show them kindness. Amen.”
Share info about the giving project you have chosen to support. Consider donating all summer offerings to a local ministry or global missionary.

You can tell your family all about what you learned about Peter when you do the Big Do this week.
Co-host
Put the name of each person in your family in a jar. Then, take turns drawing a name. For the rest of the week try to do kind things for that person.
What are some kind things that you can say or do? Let’s think of them and then act them out. (Help the kids suggest some kind things and then act them out such as giving a hug, sharing a toy, saying a kind word, etc.)
Can you make a really angry face? In our Big Story, who had been mean to the Christians? Saul Did Saul change his mind and decide to follow Jesus? Yes
Look just a tiny bit scared. Look kind of scared. Look really, really scared. Were the Christians scared when Saul wanted to join their group? Yes Did Barnabas tell the Christians to let Saul join? Yes What did Peter and his friends decide to do? To let Saul be part of the group
Let’s point to everyone we can see in our group. Point at all the people in the room. 1 John 1:21 (NIrV), “______ who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”
Anyone
Just some people
What is our Big Do? Draw your families’ names from a jar and do kind things for them.
