I Can Learn From Jesus

In this lesson, children learn that Jesus is the best teacher who helps them make wise and loving choices. Using the story of Peter and Cornelius along with scenes from Zootopia, kids see how listening and learning lead to understanding and friendship. Through games, worship, and reflection, they are encouraged to follow Jesus’ example every day.

Series Note

Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Elementary lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!

Venue Ideas:

Lesson 3 (Zootopia): Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.

Petting Zoo: Hire a local petting zoo or utilize members in your church to provide some animals for an outdoor experience.

Game Show: Host a game show with real prizes. Choose fun prizes to give away to the winners, even cash or gift cards. Create your own game show or use some of the game shows already created by Crowd Control Games. (www.crowdcontrolgames.com) These games add fun and professionalism to your game show experience.

Stuffed Animal Show and Tell: Allow kids to bring their own stuffed animals to show and tell their friends about. You could also provide stuffed animals for those who did not bring one or for everyone.

Welcome to Summer To The Max at the Movies! We have a fun movie this week. It’s Zootopia. Do you remember if that movie is about people or animals? Yep, it’s full of animals.

Engage 1

Co-host

I liked the sloth that moved (Say it slowly) super slow. Let’s wave our hand like we’re as slow as a sloth.

Wave at the kids slowly.

Host

In that movie, some of the animals were scared of the other animals because someone told a lie. That’s why it’s so important to learn what is true.

Co-host

I have an idea, let’s share some facts about animals so you can learn something new.

Host

At the end, we can see how much you remember.

Play the game. For some of the animals have the kids act out the animal or make its sound. At the end of the game ask a couple of questions related to the facts.

  • An ostrich’s eyes are bigger than its brain.

  • Hummingbirds can weigh less than a penny.

  • Bats have thumbs.

  • Gorillas burp when they’re happy.

  • Sharks lay the biggest eggs in the world.

  • Walruses can sleep in water.

  • Starfish aren’t actually fish.

  • Some snails can sleep for 3 years.

  • Rats laugh when they are tickled.

  • A chameleon’s tongue can be twice as long as its body.

  • Blue whales make the loudest sound of any animal.

  • A sheep has four stomachs.

  • An octopus has three hearts.

  • Honeybees dance.

  • Turtles can breathe through their behind.

Host

We learned a lot about animals. There were so many things I didn’t know. That’s why it’s important to listen and learn. Otherwise, you’ll never know new things.

Co-host

You know, I think there’s Someone we should always listen to because we learn good and important things from Him.

Host

You’re right. Let’s sing today’s Big Point together and find out who it is. Put your hand next to your ear.

I Can Learn From Jesus!

Co-host

Jesus teaches us how to make wise choices and be God’s big helpers.

Host

That’s why we use our listening ears when we pray and read our Bibles.

Movie Moment

There is a scene in the movie Zootopia where Judy and Nick visit the DMV to run a license plate. The worker—a sloth named Flash—moves and talks incredibly slowly, even while telling a joke. It’s a silly scene that shows Judy’s growing impatience and Nick’s love of messing with her. If your church has the proper licensing you may choose to show this clip. If you cannot show the clip, simply summarize the moment or describe it to the kids.

I’m so glad that all of the animals became friends again at the end of the movie. That would have been sad if they all stay scared and angry.

Host

I agree. They learned how to get along. Learning is important if you want to grow and be a better helper to God. Let’s sing our Big Point again,

Host

I Can Learn From Jesus!

Co-host

Let’s see what the Bible says about learning by looking at our Big Verse.

Co-host

Proverbs 23:12 (NIrV), “Listen carefully to words of knowledge.”

Host

That verse reminds us to listen to what God teaches us. What part of our body do we use to listen? Point to it.

Co-host

You’re right, we use our ears to listen. But we also use something else. Do you know what it is? (Pause) Point to your brain.

Host

We use our ears to hear sounds, but our brain is what helps us understand the sound. That’s why you have to listen carefully by paying close attention.

Co-host

Let’s play some animal sounds for you. Listen closely and see if you can name which animal makes that sound.

Find and play the following sounds one at a time and allow kids to guess, then play the slide showing the correct animal. You can make the sound as obvious or as difficult as you choose for your group. Choose new kids for each round to allow more kids to participate.

  • Grizzly bear
  • Chicken
  • Dog
  • Duck
  • Cricket
  • Humpback whale
  • Kitten
  • Lion
  • Turkey
  • Wolf

Co-host

You had to listen closely to know which animal to guess. I’m glad that we can read our Bible and come to church. That helps us learn from Jesus. The Bible teaches us what Jesus says.

Host

Jesus’ words are so helpful to us. Let’s listen to how Jesus taught Peter to help other people.

Big Story

Host

Peter listened to Jesus and helped Cornelius say “yes” to Jesus. Peter was confused, but Jesus’ words helped him. Let’s ask Jesus to help us listen closely and obey Him. I’ll pray for all of us as you close your eyes. (Pray)

Share info about the giving project you have chosen to support. Consider donating all summer offerings to a local ministry or global missionary.
