Series Note

Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Elementary lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!

Venue Ideas:

Kick-Off Lesson (Star Wars): Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.

Star Wars Inflatables: Rent space-themed inflatables for a super-sized service.

Jedi Training Course: Create simple “Jedi training” stations using cones, pool noodles, and balance challenges to help kids grow their skills—just like Jedi in training.

Face Painting: Hire a face painter or utilize volunteers to paint space-themed designs.

Welcome to Summer To The Max at the Movies! This summer we’re talking about some of our favorite movies to find out what we can discover about following Jesus.

Engage 1Materials: Foam Lightsaber, Star Balloons

Co-host

Do you think that we can learn how to be better at listening and obeying Jesus? We sure can! That’s what our Big Point is going to show us.

Host

Let’s get ready to sing the Big Point together. Put your hand next to your ear.

I Can Grow!

Co-host

Okay, let’s try to do the Big Point right now. Boys and girls, squat down low…now, stand up and reach high in the sky. Stand on your tippy toes. (Stand and reach up) Wow! Look at how quickly we all grew up.

Host

Boys and girls, you can sit on your pockets. We don’t grow that quickly. We grow a little bit more every day. I’m sure you are much bigger now than you were at your last birthday. Our Big Point means that we can become better followers of Jesus.

Co-host

I never realized that I could become better at listening to Jesus or doing what He says to do. If I grow and become a better friend and follower of Jesus, will that help me?

Host

Everyone, shake your head “yes!” This week is Star Wars week. I love watching those movies and cartoons. The heroes in those movies had to learn a lot before they could stop the bad guys.

Co-host

I remember the heroes had lightsabers like this. (Show the foam lightsaber) Let’s all pretend to swing our lightsaber. (Swing the lightsaber) The hero, Luke, had to work hard to learn how to use this.

Host

Let’s choose a friend to help us with a Star Wars challenge. Our friend is going to see if he/she can keep the balloon floating by hitting it with the lightsaber while we count to five.

Co-host

Before we play, I’ll show our friend how to win the game.

Optional, play theme music. Demonstrate the game. Allow the child to hit the balloon while everyone counts to five. If they child fails, show him/her again and allow them another chance.

Host

Let’s clap for our friend! Good job. Just like he/she learned to play the game and get better, we can learn how to follow Jesus by listening to everything He says in the Bible. Let’s stand and sing a song to Jesus now.

Movie Moment

There is a scene in Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures where Luke trains with a lightsaber aboard the Millennium Falcon. Obi-Wan guides him to trust the Force as he learns to block blaster bolts from a training remote. If your church has the proper licensing you may choose to show this clip. If you cannot show the clip, simply summarize the moment or describe it to the kids.

Engage 2Materials: Popcorn, Salt, Butter, Candy, Pretzels, Oreos, Popcorn Bucket (2), Plastic Worms, Dirt, Sticks

Host and Co-host enter. This Engage uses popcorn. According to American Academy of Pediatrics, popcorn isn’t a choking hazard for children 4 or over. However, use caution whenever introducing snacks into a lesson.

Co-host

How many of you have a dog or cat at home? Do you remember when they were tiny puppies and kittens? Are they cute when they’re little?

Host

They sure are, but are they supposed to stay puppies and kittens forever? No, if they are healthy dogs and cats then they grow up. When we are following and obeying Jesus, we become better friends of Jesus. Let’s sing our Big Point again,

Host

I Can Grow!

Co-host

I have an idea. Let’s see what the Bible says by reading our Big Verse.

Co-host

2 Peter 1:8 (NIrV), “All these things should describe you more and more. They will make you useful and fruitful as you know our Lord Jesus Christ better.”

Host

The Bible has a list of all kinds of good things that we can add to our life like kindness and love. Adding good things to our life helps us to grow so God can use us to be His big helpers.

Co-host

Summer to the Max is all about the movies. Does anyone like to get snacks when you go to the movies? My favorite snack is popcorn.

Show both popcorn buckets full of popcorn.

Host

It’s fun when you can add extra toppings to your popcorn to make it really yummy. I’m going to show you some toppings we might add and see if you think it will make the popcorn taste better or worse.

Co-host

Let’s add some salt. Pretend to sprinkle salt on the popcorn. That makes it taste so good. Now we can pour some butter over the top. Will that taste good?

Add those in one bucket.

Host

Next, we’ll add some worms and dirt. Everyone, say “yum, yum!” (Add them in the second bucket) Would that taste good? No, you’re right. What about some candy and cookies? That’s much better. Let’s drop some in the popcorn.

Add them to the first bucket.

Co-host

Some sticks from our backyard would be perfect, right? (Add sticks to the second bucket) It wouldn’t? Would it taste bad? Let’s drop in some pretzels. That would be better.

Add the pretzels to the bucket.

Host

Which popcorn bucket would you like to eat? (Show both) We want to add good things to our life so we can be helpful to God and others. We’re going to learn about all kinds of good things to add that will help us grow. Let’s listen to a story about Peter, one of Jesus’ friends.

Big Story

Host

I love that Jesus forgave Peter and even gave Peter the chance to be His big helper. Let’s quietly talk to Jesus now and ask Him to make us a big helper, too. (Pause) Now, I’ll pray for us, too. (Pray)
