Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Elementary lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!

Venue Ideas:

Lesson 4 (Despicable Me): Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.

Picnic: Purchase picnic supplies and food.Enjoy an indoor or outdoor picnic.

Ice Cream Sundaes: Provide ice cream with all the toppings. Kids get to create their own ice cream sundaes. You could even purchase banana flavored ice cream or include bananas to incorporate the minion theme.

Welcome to Summer To The Max at the Movies! This week is Despicable Me week. I love those silly yellow Minions that help Gru.

Engage 1Materials: Spinning Wheel

Co-host

They are really funny, aren’t they? Sometimes those little Minions just can’t seem to stop themselves from making the wrong choice. Do you think we can control what we do?

Host

It would be so silly if we couldn’t do that. I have an idea. Let’s play a game where we spin this wheel and do whatever action its says when the wheel stops.

Spin the wheel and play the game. You can have kids come onstage and spin the wheel. Suggested actions: Be a monkey, silly dance, hop like a bunny, make a crazy face, pretend to cry, etc. Have all of the kids perform the actions.

Co-host

Oh my, that was a fun game, but I’m not sure that I would enjoy never being able to decide what to do. Sometimes we think that we have to throw a fit when we feel frustrated or cry when we don’t get our way.

Host

Let’s sing today’s Big Point together and find out what God says about controlling ourselves. Put your hand next to your ear.

I Can Choose My Actions!

Co-host

God helps us choose the right things to do, even if we don’t feel like doing them. You can say “no” to doing what you feel like doing.

Host

Choosing your actions means choosing to do the things that will make you a better big helper to God.

Co-host

That’s a great action to choose.

Movie Moment

There is a scene in the movie Despicable Me where Gru and Dr. Nefario race to save the girls from Vector’s ship. It’s a funny and intense scene—Vector gets hilariously smushed by the expanding moon, while Gru risks everything to rescue the girls. If your church has the proper licensing you may choose to show this clip. If you cannot show the clip, simply summarize the moment or describe it to the kids.

He didn’t have to be bad. He learned to be a good dad. We can make good choices, too, when we follow Jesus. Let’s sing our Big Point again,

Let’s see what the Bible says by looking at our Big Verse.

Co-host

1 Corinthians 9:27 (NIrV), “I train my body and bring it under control.” What does that mean?

Host

That verse means that if we want to get better at doing something, then we have to keep trying. Let’s have some friends come on stage to help us.

Co-host

They are going to do something hard. You might not get it right at first, but that’s okay. Let’s keep trying.

Have the kids practice different things like hula hooping, tossing a ball into a basket, jumping a small hurdle, and walking on a balance beam. Encourage them as they try more than once to succeed.

Host

Let’s clap for our friends for not giving up. It wasn’t easy. That’s true about making good choices. It’s not always easy to choose to do the right thing.

Co-host

Thankfully, God helps us do better when we keep working hard to make good choices. Don’t give up and just do what you feel like doing. Keep trying every day.

Host

Let’s listen to a story about Peter and how he learned to make good choices.

Big Story

Host

Peter made a better choice when he chose to be joyful instead of angry. He was under control. We can do that, too. Let’s take a moment to ask Jesus to help us choose good and wise actions today. Close your eyes and talk to Him quietly at your seat. (Pause) Now, I’ll pray for all of us. (Pray)
