I Was Made Special

This lesson teaches kids that God made each of us special and with a purpose. Through the story of David, they learn that even ordinary tasks can prepare us for God’s bigger plans. Children are encouraged to see themselves as God’s creation, capable of doing good works and helping others.

Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I’m so glad that you came by to visit. I know that Conductor Carl is always happy to have his friends join us for lots of fun.

Co-host is wearing shoes on his/her hands.

Co-host

My feet are tired. Jr. Conductors, do you ever get tired of walking? I do. Let’s rub our feet and say, “Ouch.” That’s why I’ve decided to use my hands to walk.

Shows the shoes on his/her hands.

Host

Jr. Conductors, were our hands made to do the same things our feet do? (Pause) You’re right! God made our hands to do other important things.

Co-host

I’m going to try walking on them anyway.

Co-host places his/her hands on the floor in an attempt to do a handstand and

walk. He/She fails to do it. After trying multiple times, he/she is visually frustrated.

Co-host

My hands don’t work. Ugh. I guess this means my hands aren’t very helpful.

Host

That’s not true. Our hands are helpful. Let’s think of some of the things we do with our hands.

Have the kids act out different tasks, such as waving, shaking hands, playing games, holding objects, etc.

Host

Our hands were made for special jobs. You know what? We were made by God for special reasons, too. That’s what we’re going to learn about at the Train Station. But first, let’s say, “Choo-choo!”

Host

Engineer Courtney thinks she has nothing to bring to the art show. What does she think will make her special?

Co-host

Yes, she thinks she should become a superhero. Let’s hold out our arms like we’re flying. (Pretend to fly) It’s fun to pretend, but I hope we don’t all have to become superheroes.

Host

We don’t need to be superheroes to be special. That comes from God. We’ll

learn all about it at the Music Store when we practice our Big Point.

Co-host

(Practice the Big Point) I Was Made Special!

Co-host

What does that mean?

Host

Our Big Point means that God created us for His big plan. God has a plan to help people, and we get to be part of that plan. Isn’t that wonderful?

Co-host

I do like being a big helper. We can be Jesus’ big helper.

Host

We can. That means each one of us has special things that we can do. Let’s look at some items and have the Jr. Conductors tell us what special job they can do.

Show the slides and have the kids describe the item, tell what it can do, and even act out using it.

Hammer

Saw

Wooden Board

Screw

Paintbrush

Co-host

I don’t think a hammer would make a very good paintbrush.

Host

That’s true. Each of those tools is used to build a house. They’re all part of the plan to build something people can live inside. We get to use the special things God placed inside of us to help people know more about Jesus. I’m glad that God made us special. I hope Engineer Courtney can learn that.

Engage 2Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Engage 2 Activity, Paints or Markers, Paintbrush, Easel

Print Engage 2 Activity prior to service. If you have access to a large format printer, consider printing a large version of the activity page. The slide will project the activity page so everyone can see the pictures.

Host and Co-host enter.

Host

Engineer Courtney thought she wasn’t special because she couldn’t rescue that cat from the tree. Can you make the sound of a kitty? Is that true? No, she was still made special by God. Let’s stand and practice the Big Point again,

Host

I Was Made Special!

Co-host

Ms. Meagan shared an important Big Verse from the Bible with her.

Co-host

Ephesians 2:10 (NIrV) says, “We are God’s creation. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good works.”

Host

When you draw a picture for your mommy or daddy, are you happy you worked hard on your drawing? (Pause) Of course, you are happy because you created it for someone special like your parents.

Co-host

God created us. We are special to Him because He made us. God has given each of us the power to do good things. Point to yourself and say, “I can do good things.”

Host

Let’s choose some friends to take turns helping us paint a masterpiece. Each of these pictures has numbers on them. Those numbers tell you which color to use.

Co-host

We’ll have two friends come and paint one of the sections of the picture while (Host) and I help paint other parts. Then, we’ll choose two more friends to help.

Have the kids come on stage two at a time, and each of them will work on one of the two pictures. The Host and Co-host can speed up the process by coloring in parts of the picture. Choose more kids to come and paint or color another section until the picture is complete. Encourage the kids in the audience to help them choose the right color.

Host

Look at how great our masterpiece turned out. Give yourselves a big hand for helping us finish the picture.

Co-host

It makes me feel special to know that God created me to do good things. It doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside. Each of us has special things from God on the inside.

Host

We’ll learn about that in our Big Story. First, let’s stand and worship God!

Big Story

Optional, play soft instrumental music

Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. I’m glad that Jesus helps us to do great things. While your eyes are closed, think of one great thing God wants you to do when you get home. Does God want you to obey right away, clean up without being asked, or be a big helper? Think for just a minute. When you have thought of something, give me a thumbs up. Great, now keep your heads bowed and eyes closed, and let’s talk to Jesus and thank Him for helping us. You can pray right at your seat. Repeat after me. Dear God, thank You for making me to do great things. Thank You for all the ways You help us to be great helpers. In Jesus name, Amen. You did a great job!

Engineer Courtney discovered that she did have something special to share at the art show: her costumes. That’s what we learned from King David in our Big Story. Let’s practice our Big Point,

Host

I Was Made Special!

Co-host

We can practice the Big Point this week by doing the Big Do.

Host

This week’s Big Do is to take turns sharing something special about each person in your family.

Co-host

Can you stand up and show me special things that you can do? I’ll give you something to try, and you can see if it’s something you can do. It’s okay if you can’t. I’m sure there will be something you can do.

Suggest different things the kids can do, such as standing on one leg, singing in a very high or very low voice, twirling five times, making an animal sound, etc.

Host

That was lots of fun. You should ask your parents what special things they can do, too. Let’s say our Big Point.

Host

I Was Made Special!

Big Review
  • Let’s Practice our Big Point again. Hmm, did our Big Point say I Was Made Unspecial or I Was Made Special?
