I Was Made Different

This lesson helps children understand that being different can be a strength when they follow God’s ways. Using Daniel’s story, it shows how choosing obedience and wisdom honors God even in tough situations. Kids are encouraged to live out Romans 12:2 by letting their thoughts and actions reflect Jesus.

Host

Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! It’s always so fun when you visit. Together, we learn more about Jesus and the great big plan He created us for.

Co-host

What do you think about my overalls and hat?

Points to himself/herself.

Host

I think that looks so nice.

Co-host

No, silly. Do you see how I dressed exactly like you? No one will be able to tell if I’m you or you’re me. Look, Jr. Conductors. (Stands next to the Host) You can’t tell who is who, can you? This is such a funny joke.

Co-host laughs.

Host

Jr. Conductors, do we look exactly the same, or do we look different? You’re right,

we look different.

Co-host

No way! We look exactly the same. Jr. Conductors, can you point to all the different things about us? I’m sure that you won’t find any.

Host assists the Jr. Conductors in pointing out the differences. You can even have a child come on stage and point them out.

Co-host

That’s surprising. I thought we looked the same, but we actually look different. I hope that’s okay.

Host

Today, we’re going to learn that being different is not a bad thing if you’re following Jesus. Sometimes, obeying Jesus means you have to say and do things differently than others. Before we visit Conductor Carl and his friends, let’s say, “Choo-choo!”

Host

Jr. Conductors, do you think it’s wise for Mia to copy her friends’ bad choices?

Co-host

I agree. Mia could get in a lot of trouble by doing exactly what her friends do. Wait a second. Didn’t you say that we could be different?

Host

Yes! God helps us to be different when being different means choosing to be wise.

We’ll learn all about it at the Music Store when we practice our Big Point.

Co-host

Let’s stand and practice our Big Point together.

Co-host

(Practice the Big Point). I Was Made To Be Different!

Host

Our Big Point reminds us that God created us for His big plan. He wants us to follow Him as part of His family. If someone asks you to join them in making wrong choices, we should be different.

Co-host

I have an idea. Let’s look at some pictures and see if you can pick out which one is different than the others.

Show the slides and have the kids name each picture, then ask them to determine which one is different than the others.

Co-host

We should look different from anyone who is acting unwise.

Host

We want to copy Jesus and the things He said and did. If you do that, then you can be a big helper in God’s big plan. Let’s hope that Mia learns to be different from her friends.

Host

I Was Made To Be Different!

Co-host

Pirate Pete shared an important Big Verse with her from the Bible.

Co-host

Romans 12:2 (NIrV), “Don’t live the way this world lives. Let your way of thinking be completely changed.”

Host

That verse means that we should copy people who act like Jesus. If someone is being disrespectful to their mommy or daddy, should we copy that person? No.

Co-host

If someone is kind and helpful, is that a way Jesus would act? Yes

Host

Let’s play a fun game that’s all about copying. We’re going to move our bodies and clap our hands. Each time we do that, we want you to try to copy what you saw and heard us do.

Have the kids stand and begin with simple movements like clapping twice. As the kids grow comfortable with the patterns, add other movements such as stomping each foot, clapping overhead, or quick claps in succession.

Host

That was so much fun, and you did a great job copying us. When we read our Bibles and pray and chat with God, we learn how to copy Jesus better.

Co-host

That helps us not to copy people who are making unwise choices. In just a moment, we’ll hear the story of a young man who was surrounded by people who didn’t love God.

Host

Let’s listen and find out what choice he made in our Big Story. First, let’s stand and worship God!

Big Story

Optional, play soft instrumental music

Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. It helped Daniel to have friends who also wanted to make wise choices. We have friends at church who make wise choices, too. I’m glad that God gives us good friends. Let’s pray for our friends. You can do that anytime, so let’s do it now. Touch the shoulder of a friend nearby if they don’t mind. Repeat after me. “Dear God, help my friend to make wise choices and follow You. Amen.” Great job. Let’s keep helping our friends, just like Daniel and his friends.

I’m sure Mia is glad she made a wise choice not to copy her friends. They are all stuck at home being punished. But Mia gets to go out and play. Being different is okay when you follow God. That’s what we learned from Daniel in our Big Story. Let’s practice our Big Point,

Host

I Was Made To Be Different!

Co-host

We can practice the Big Point this week by doing the Big Do.

Host

This week’s Big Do is to try something different to eat. Instead of choosing the same thing, try something new. Then, talk about how we can be different and obey Jesus.

Co-host

Let’s look at some foods, and tell me if they are different or the same as what you eat at home. Some of the foods will be from different countries than the one we live in.

Show the slides. Ask the kids if the foods are the same or different from what they normally eat. Have the kids pretend to eat them.

Host

Have fun with the Big Do. Let’s say our Big Point.
