Large Group Instructions
Host enters.
Host
Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I have a question for you. Do any of you have a nightlight in your bedroom?
Co-Host
I do. I like to have some light in the room when I fall asleep. That’s why I have a flashlight in my house, in case the power goes out.
Co-Host shows the flashlight.
Host
Flashlights are helpful when you go on a camping trip, too. I heard that Engineer Kelly is taking the Wilderness Explorers on a camping trip today.
Co-Host
That means Mia will get to go. I’m sure she will have fun.
Host
Can I show you something fun to do with a flashlight? Shine that flashlight on my hands. I’ll make a shadow puppet. Jr. Conductors, try to guess what it is.
Lower the lights and have the Co-Host shine the flashlight to the side of the Host. To make it more effective, consider placing a piece of white foamboard behind to catch the shadow. The Host makes a couple of simple shadow puppets and allow the kids to guess.
Host
Did you know that Jesus talked about light in the Bible? That’s what we’re going to discover today. Everyone, stand and give me a big, “Choo-choo!”
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
I thought Mia would be excited to go camping, but she’s afraid to be in the woods after dark.
Host
Do you ever feel nervous in the dark? (Pause) When the light turns on, we usually feel better.
Co-Host
Unless our mommy turns on the light and we’re not ready to wake up. Jr. Conductors, show me your biggest yawn.
Host
When we are friends with Jesus, we always have light nearby no matter where we are. It’s because of today’s true Big Point. Let’s practice our Big Point again,
Host
Jesus Is The Light Of The World!
Co-Host
Jesus is light. That means Jesus shines brightly. Can anything stop Jesus from shining? If there was something, that would make me very nervous.
Host
Do you still have your flashlight?
Co-Host
Yes, I have a few extra, too.
Host
Good, let’s choose some friends to come and help. (Bring up kids) I want each of you to hold a flashlight. Let’s turn off the lights. I need all of our Jr. Conductors to be brave and sit quietly, so you can see what happens.
Turn off the lights.
Co-Host
It’s really dark in here.
Host
Yes, but let’s all turn on our flashlights. (Turn on the flashlights) Shine them around the room.
Co-Host
The light is still bright, even when it’s dark. No matter how dark it gets, the light is stronger than the dark.
Host
That’s true! We can turn the lights back on now. (Dismiss the volunteers) Jesus is the light of the world. Sometimes our world seems dark and scary, like the woods where Mia will camp. But Jesus’ light is so much brighter, and nothing can stop His love from being with us. That’s why we can feel calm and safe no matter where we are.
Co-Host
Jesus is like a flashlight. He shows us the right places to go so we don’t bump our toes on something.
Host
He is our light. That truth could help Mia feel better about staying at the campout. Let’s find out if she will.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host
Do you think Mia will stay at the campout? (Pause) I think so, too. The fire Engineer Kelly made with her was so bright. I think the light helped her feel safe and calm.
Host
Jesus’ light helps us, too. Let’s practice singing the Big Point again,
Host
Jesus Is The Light Of The World!
Co-Host
Engineer Kelly showed Mia the place in the Bible where Jesus talked about being a light.
Co-Host
John 8:12 (NIrV), “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in darkness.” Did Jesus mean it would never be dark again?
Host
No, it doesn’t mean that it will never be dark. It means that if we are friends and followers of Jesus, then He helps us know what is true so that we don’t believe untrue things.
Co-Host
Let’s look at some pictures and see if we can guess what we see.
Host
At first the pictures will be dark, so dark you might have hard time figuring out what they are. We’ll let everyone guess and then show you the picture.
Show each picture allowing the kids to guess. The Co-Host could begin by saying something off the wall to get the kids guessing. Then show the answer slide.
Co-Host
We guessed lots of wrong things when the pictures were dark.
Host
But when we could see the bright pictures, we could easily guess what they were. That’s what Jesus does for us. He makes dark things bright, so we know what is true.
Co-Host
I’m glad that I can be a friend and follower of Jesus.
Co-Host
It’s always the right choice to say, “Yes” to Jesus. It’s almost time to travel to the Big Story Station, but first let’s stand and worship God.
Optional, play soft instrumental music.
One way to pray is to use the words we read in the Bible to help us talk to God. Let’s use our Big Verse to pray. Repeat after me, “Jesus is my light.” (Repeat 2x) Now say, “I follow You. I don’t walk in darkness.” (Repeat 2x) Praying the Bible helps us remember what is true. I’ll use our Big Verse to pray for all of us. Thank You, Jesus for being the light of the world and showing us what is true. I’m glad that we don’t have to walk in darkness because we follow You and You are with us.”
Host and Co-Host enter. Prior to this portion of the lesson, set up a simple obstacle course on the stage. You could use items such as inflatable punching bags, cones, trash cans, etc. to create the course.
Co-Host
I’m glad that Mia stayed for the campout. Now she gets to earn her special Wilderness Explorers’ badge.
Host
Not only that, but she also learned something true about Jesus from our Big Point. Let’s all practice our Big Point again,
Host
Jesus Is The Light Of The World!
Co-Host
You can tell your family about Jesus healing the blind man and giving us light when you do the Big Do this week. Conductor Carl gave us a fun idea.
Co-Host
Use things in your house to make an obstacle course. You could use trash cans, chairs, or couch cushions to make it. Turn off the lights and try to walk through it without bumping into anything. Then try it again with the lights on.
Host
We made an obstacle course so we can try it now. I’m going to choose some Jr. Conductors to try walking through it wearing a blindfold, and then they can try it with their eyes uncovered.
Allow the kids to walk through the obstacle course blindfolded and with their eyes uncovered.
Co-Host
It’s much easier when you can see.
Host
Life is much easier when we follow Jesus and have His light. Let’s say our Big Point once more.
Host
