Large Group Instructions
Suggested Music selections for this lesson include:
- Optional soft instrumental music for Big Story
Host and Co-Host enter. The Co-Host enters carrying a fishbowl with a fake goldfish floating inside. You can use any kind of clear bowl as a fishbowl. If you have a real goldfish, you could also use that.
Host Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I’m so glad that you visited. Let’s make everyone feel welcome today by turning to a friend and saying, “Hello!”
Host tells the Co-Host “Hello.”
Co-Host Shh, not so loud. You’ll wake up Tony.
Host Who’s Tony?
Co-Host My goldfish. He sleeps a lot. I think. I’m actually not sure when goldfish go to sleep. Looks like he’s up. I guess it’s time to feed him. We need our strength. Tony is racing with me today in the big race. Hold this.
Co-Host hands the Host the fishbowl and pulls out the fast-food sack.
Co-Host (Fast Food restaurant) is his favorite.
Host Jr. Conductors, is (fast food) good food for a fish to eat? (Pause) No! What kind of food do they eat?
Co-Host Fish food? Oh boy, that makes a lot more sense. (To the fish) Tony, can I have your lunch? I’m kind of hungry.
Host What we put inside of us is important. It’s not just food. We’re going to discover what we can put in our invisible hearts. Everyone, stand and let out a big, “Choo-choo!”
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host The big race is going to be so much fun. I’m glad that Farmer Faith and Engineer Courtney are going to help us.
Host I think the Jr. Conductors could help them find just the right thing. Should Farmer Faith and Engineer Courtney give the runners something bad or something good? (Pause) Yes, something good. That reminds me of today’s Big Point. Let’s practice our Big Point again.
Host Put In The Good!
Co-Host Is our Big Point talking about what we use when we run a race?
Host Our Big Point is talking about what someone puts inside of their invisible heart. That’s the part of us that connects with God and follows Him.
Co-Host When we fill our invisible hearts with good things, it helps us follow God and help other people. What can we feed our hearts? I like pizza. Jr. Conductors, pretend to eat a really cheesy slice of pizza.
Pretend to eat a slice and pull away a long string of cheese.
Co-Host The pizza is really hot. Oh no, jump up and down and wave your hand in front of your mouth to cool it off. Let’s quickly drink a whole jug of water.
Pretend to chug a big glass of water.
Host Oh my, you can sit down. Pizza is delicious, but you don’t feed your invisible heart pizza. We feed our invisible heart with God’s Word, the Bible.
Show the edible paper with “God’s Word” written on it with food safe markers. These can be purchased online or at a cake decoration supplier. If you don’t have this option, you could substitute with a cookie with a Bible on it or a cake. Really any kind of item that you can eat could work.
Co-Host Oh, I didn’t know that’s how it worked. Okay, heart, it’s time to eat.
Co-Host takes a bite of the edible paper.
Co-Host I thought the Bible would taste like candy.
Host That’s not how we feed our heart the Bible. We feed our heart by reading the Bible and listening to God. You can read it with a grown-up every day. It’s good food for your heart. Let’s see if we can help our friends with the big race.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host Jr. Conductors, have you ever eaten something spicy? What did it feel like on your tongue? I’m glad that Farmer Faith and Engineer Courtney decided not to give that to the runners.
Host Me, too. Conductor Carl’s idea of giving water is much better. That’s something good for the runners. It reminds us that we only want to put good things in our hearts. Let’s practice singing the Big Point again,
Host Put In The Good!
Co-Host I think we should talk about today’s Big Verse. This verse teaches us when we should feed our hearts.
Co-Host Psalm 1:2 (NIrV) says, “The Law of the Lord gives them joy. They think about His law day and night.”
Host This is a song from the Bible. It’s a song King David wrote. The word “law” in this verse is talking about God’s Word. King David believed that the Bible gives us joy.
Co-Host That joy comes because the Bible is full of true things and teaches us about God.
Host That’s right. We can think about what we read in the Bible day and night. What do we see in the sky in the morning? (Pause) Yes, the sun.
Host Is the sun dark and cold? (Pause) No, it’s bright and warm. Let’s pretend that it’s morning. Lay down. Can you say, “Cock-a-doodle-do,” like a rooster? Rub your eyes. Now sit up. Stretch your arms wide and yawn. What else do we do in the morning?
Have the kids share some morning rituals and act them out.
Co-Host We learned in this verse that we can also think about the true things we read in the Bible.
Host Just like we feed our bodies with breakfast, we feed our invisible hearts when we think about the Bible. What do we see in the sky at night? (Pause) Yes, the moon and stars.
Host Is it dark at night? Yes. Are there a lot of stars in the sky or just a few? A lot. Let’s pretend that we are ready for bed. What kinds of things do you do to get ready for sleep?
Have the kids share nighttime rituals and act them out.
Co-Host We learned from our Big Verse that we can also think about the Bible at night. How can we feed our invisible hearts at night?
Host We can put God’s word into our hearts all day long and even right before bed. Reading the Bible and thinking about it brings us lots of joy. The songs we sing here at church are true words from the Bible. This is a great time to stand and sing a song to worship God.
Play optional soft instrumental music
This is a great time to use our Big Verse. Let’s use it to pray and talk to God. Repeat this prayer after me, “I will think about the Bible all day and night.” (Repeat 3x). I’ll use our Big Verse to pray for all of us. “Dear God, thank You for giving us the Bible. Your word brings us joy, and we will think about it day and night. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host Mmm, that water sure was tasty. It helped me and Tony finish the race.
Host Did Tony have some of the water, too?
Co-Host No, Tony brought his own water. (Whispers) He lives in water.
Host Just like that cold water helped you, God’s word helps us. When we read the Bible, we get to follow the Big Point. Let’s all practice our Big Point again,
Host Put In The Good!
Co-Host That’s what King David did when he was sad. He listened to God, and God’s words helped David become strong and win the battle.
Host We can tell our families about King David when we do the Big Do this week. Conductor Carl gave us a fun idea.
Host Have a healthy snack and talk about good things we can feed our invisible hearts as you eat.
Co-Host The Bible is good for our hearts because it brings us joy. God’s Word reminds us of how much God loves us and how Jesus wants to be our friend. What are some snacks that you enjoy eating?
Have the kids list snacks they like to eat. Talk about what they taste like and even pretend to eat it. If it’s a sour snack, have the kids make a face. If it’s possible, consider giving the kids a snack, like fruit gummies.
Co-Host We have a fun snack to give you today that you can eat as you think about all of the good things God gives us in the Bible.
Host Let’s say our Big Point once more.
Host Put In The Good!
Did our Big Point say Put In The Good! or Put In The Bad?
Stand and pretend that you are running in a race. First, we need to stretch our arms and legs. Run in place. Can you run fast? Can you run slowly? You can sit down.
