The Bible Trains Us

This lesson shows that the Bible is a powerful tool for learning how to live in a way that pleases God. By hearing the story of King Josiah, children discover the value of listening carefully and choosing to obey God’s Word. It encourages kids to practice reading the Bible so they can grow in wisdom and faith.

Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! Let’s play a fun listening game.

Co-host

It’s called Simon Says. Whatever we tell you that Simon says to do, you do. But if we don’t say “Simon Says,” don’t do it.

Host

Let’s do an animal themed Simon Says to make it silly.

Do Simon Says with animal motions such as “monkey arms,” “frog hops,” “bunny noses,” “lion roars,” “bird wings,” etc. Be silly with your movements, and work in a few that Simon doesn’t say.

Host

You can sit down and take a break. Say, “Whew!” Use your finger to point to your ear. Did you use your ears to play that game? You sure did. You used your ears to listen.

Co-host

We’ve learned how important it is to listen to God’s Word, the Bible. The Bible teaches us the important things that God wants us to learn.

Host

You can’t learn from God if you don’t hear what the Bible says. We’ll learn more with Conductor Carl and his friends soon, but first say, “Choo-choo!”

Engage 1Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Toy Instruments

Host and Co-host enter.

Host

Elmer wants to drive before he learns how to do it. Do you think he should sit and listen to Mr. Rios first?

Co-host

I agree. He can’t hop in the car without being trained. If he tried to drive first, he might crash.

Host

That reminds me of our Big Point. It teaches us why listening to the Bible is important when following Jesus.

Co-host

Let’s stand and practice our Big Point.

Co-host

(Practice the Big Point) The Bible Trains Us!

Host

The Bible teaches us all how to be Jesus’ friends and followers. It helps us think

and act like Jesus so we can make wise choices.

Co-host

If you didn’t read and obey the Bible, you might do the opposite of what Jesus wants you to do. That wouldn’t help at all.

Host

Being trained is helpful. We have some friends who are going to help us on stage.

Choose kids to come on stage. Hand each one a toy instrument such as a drum, trumpet, recorder, etc.

Co-host

Let’s look at each instrument. When our friend holds it up, shout out its name. Then, we’ll see if we can make the sound.

Have each child hold up the instruments one by one. Have the kids name each one and attempt to make the sound.

Host

When I say go, I want all of you who have an instrument to use it to make a sound. Let’s see how it sounds. Go! (Have the kids play the instruments) Did that sound like a song? Not really. They could play a song if they practiced playing their instruments every day.

Co-host

If we read the Bible every day, then God can train us to be better followers of Jesus. That will help us make wise choices and help others. Let’s see if Elmer is listening in his class.

Engage 2Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Mirror

Host and Co-host enter.

Host

Does Elmer still seem confused about how to drive safely? Yes, he does. I’m glad Mr. Rios is there to teach him how to drive. I’m thankful we have the Bible to train us. Let’s stand and practice the Big Point again,

Host

The Bible Trains Us!

Co-host

Let’s look at the Big Verse from the Bible.

Co-host

2 Timothy 3:16 (NIrV), “God has breathed life into all of Scripture… It is useful for training us to do what is right.”

Host

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? (Pause) Yes, you see yourself. Do you ever look in the mirror and see crazy hair after waking up?

Co-host

Do you ever make silly faces to see what you look like? Can you make a super silly face right now?

Host

Looking in the mirror is helpful because it shows you what you look like. If you see something that doesn’t belong, you can wipe it off, like a giant booger.

Co-host

When you read the Bible, it teaches you how God wants you to act, speak, and think. If you do things that are different from what the Bible says to do, then you can make a change to obey the Bible.

Host

Let’s practice copying what we see in the mirror. We’ll show you some faces, and we want you to copy them by making the same face.

Show the slides and have the kids copy the faces they see.

Co-host

Be sure to copy what God says to do in the Bible. That’s something a king learned to do. We’ll hear about him today. Before we hear our Big Story, let’s stand and worship God!

Big Story

Optional play soft instrumental music

Jr. Conductors, I’m glad God teaches us when we read the Bible. Let’s pray and thank God for giving us the Bible and for giving us grownups who read the Bible to us. We can also ask God to forgive us when we don’t listen and obey the Bible. Bow your head and close your eyes. I’ll pray. (Pray)

Engage 3Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

This Engage uses a Books of the Bible song. Different versions can be purchased or found online. Find one that works for your group. For this series, we will focus on learning the New Testament books.

Host

I’m proud of Elmer for passing his test. He listened to everything Mr. Rios taught. Now, he can drive safely. Let’s practice our Big Point,

King Josiah listened when the Bible was read to him. He realized they weren’t obeying God, so he decided to make different choices. You can tell your family about King Josiah when you do this week’s Big Do.

Host

This week’s Big Do is to find something you can practice doing better, like tying your shoes, drawing pictures, or even riding a bicycle or tricycle.

Co-host

This month, we’ve been learning the books in the Bible. I’m excited that you’re learning the books in our song. I think we should practice them again. When we’re done, we can see how many you remember on your own.

Play Books of the Bible Song and sing along. You can even incorporate your worship team in this segment and add fun motions to the song.

Host

Don’t forget to keep learning all of the important things in the Bible. Let’s say our Big Point.
