Small Group Instructions
This lesson talks about communion. It is important that you know what your church believes about communion and how to take it. If you have questions, please check in with your minister to see how best to approach this lesson.
Objective: Students will learn about the significance of communion, specifically focusing on the story of Jesus breaking bread, and understand the deeper meaning of this symbolic act.
Begin by discussing with the students if they have heard about communion and what it means to them. Explain that communion is a special time for Christians to remember what Jesus did for us. Share the excitement and importance of the lesson.
Discuss the Story
Breaking Bread: Provide each child with a small piece of unleavened bread or a cracker. Talk about how Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it. Encourage the students to break their bread as a simple reenactment.
Communion Cups: Distribute small disposable cups filled with grape juice. Discuss the symbolism of the cup in communion, representing Jesus' blood. Encourage the students to hold the cup and think about Jesus' sacrifice.
