Small Group Instructions
It is always important to read the verses surrounding a verse. This gives you more context. We never want to take a verse and make it mean what we want it to mean and not understand what God wanted it to mean. You will find many teachers. preachers and Christians that will quote a scripture taking it out of context to make it mean what they want it to mean instead of what God was actually telling us.
What do you think Hebrews 12:1-3 means?
Do you agree that sin easily entangles us like it says in verse 1? Why do you think it was so important to for the author to tell us that? Verse 2 is important but so is verse 1. Without knowing that sin so easily entangles us, it wouldn’t be as important to tell us that we should run with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus. God knows when we take our eyes off of him, that is when Satan sneaks in and it is easier for sin to take over us. It’s not impossible to untangle ourselves when we ask for God’s help. The important thing to remember here is, we can’t do it ourselves. Like verse 3 says consider him who endured such opposition. Who is this verse talking about? Why should we consider him? Possibly because if He could consider such strong opposition, our small problems in this world, are no match for His strength. We must ask for help.
Lets play that verse one more time and see if we can memorize it.
"Fix Your Eyes on Jesus" Game Objective: Teach the importance of focusing on Jesus by using a fun, no-supplies-needed activity.
How to Play:
Form a Circle: Have the group stand in a circle.
One "Leader": Pick one person to be the "Leader." This person will represent the idea of keeping focus on Jesus.
The "Distractors": Two other players stand outside the circle as the "Distractors." Their job is to try to get the group to look away from the "Leader" by making sounds, talking, or moving around, but without physically touching anyone.
The Goal: Everyone in the circle must keep their eyes on the "Leader" and not be distracted by the "Distractors." Switch Roles: After a few minutes, rotate the roles so everyone gets a chance to be the "Leader" and "Distractors." Debrief:
After playing, you can talk about how just like in the game, life has distractions, but Hebrews 12:2 reminds us to keep our eyes on Jesus.
This is a quick game that reinforces the message of the verse with no supplies needed.
