Small Group Instructions

Section 01Materials: Note: Game option: Buy a cheap puzzle to do as a class. Make sure to buy one small enough to finish within your class time and also nothing that might frustrate those not “in to” puzzles. Before class begins take a piece out and hide it somewhere in the room. Have the class search for the missing piece after they realize it is gone. Take time during the puzzle time to approach serious subjects that your students may be dealing with. While they are working, they may be more open to talking about depression, anxiety, suicide, etc. These are all matters Jr. Highers either deal with personally or through friends. Talk about how knowing Jesus helps but talking to someone who knows Jesus can help when these thoughts and situations arise also. Students need to know you are safe person to discuss these topics with if they deal with them. Be open to helping them find a Christian counselor if needed.

Can someone retell that verse in their own words? What do you think it means?

Can someone tell this verse in their own words? Do you think this verse is literal of your life on Earth? It would be easy to thinks this just means our eternal life, however, have you ever seen someone fall away from God and continue to make poor decisions that lead them down a bad path? What happens to them? Mostly if you continue to watch their life, bad circumstances continue to find their way into their lives. God’s word isn’t just about following rules. God wants us to have a good life so if we follow his Word, we won’t always have things go our way but we won’t find ourselves in a hole we can’t get out of either. God will always help us. But we have to believe in Him to be able to ask for His help.

How can we take this lesson and apply it our lives? Let’s review the 3 circles in this next video. Pay close attention to what happens when people try their own methods to get out of brokenness compared to when they use Jesus to get out of brokenness.

Did you pay attetion? All those things we mentioned earlier about ways people try to fill the missing piece? Those are the boomerangs that pull us back into brokenness. Only Jesus can fill that hole and break the boomerang back into brokenness. How many of you have chosen to follow Jesus? Why or why not?

You may allow kids to share their own stories about how they decided to follow Jesus and why? If they say “I don’t know”, challenge them on it. We should all be able to give an answer for why we believe when asked.  1 Peter 3:15 "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect"
