  • We cannot succeed in anything until we know what we’re trying to accomplish.

  • What are we trying to do when we read the Bible?

    • Our goal in reading must be rooted in the kind of book the Bible is.

    • The Bible is a living WORD (act of communication) from God to his people through his people.

  • Therefore, our goal is twofold:

    • First of all, our goal is to discern the voice of God.

    • Second, our goal is to discover the author’s intended meaning.

      • Think about how communication works…
  • Who determines the meaning of a text?

    • We pursue “exegesis” and try to avoid “eisegesis”

      • Exegesis = drawing meaning out of the text

      • Eisegesis = reading meaning into the text

    • This is not separate from hearing God; it is how we hear God.

    • We don’t bypass the human author to get to the Divine author.

  • Our goal is to discern God’s voice by discovering the author’s intended meaning.

    • Put simply, we listen to God by understanding the text.

    • 2 Tim 2.7: Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.
