What are we trying to do when we read the Bible?

**Begin with the right _goals_.**

   - We cannot succeed in anything until we know what we’re trying to accomplish.

   - What are we trying to do when we read the Bible?

     - Our goal in reading must be rooted in the kind of book the Bible is.

     - The Bible is a living WORD (act of communication) from God to his people through his people.

   - Therefore, our goal is twofold:

     - First of all, our goal is to discern the voice of God.

     - Second, our goal is to discover the author’s intended meaning.

        - Think about how communication works…

        - Who determines the meaning of a text?

        - We pursue “exegesis” and try to avoid “eisegesis”

            - Exegesis = drawing meaning out of the text

            - Eisegesis = reading meaning into the text

        - This is not separate from hearing God; it is how we hear God.

        - We don’t bypass the human author to get to the Divine author.

   - Our goal is to discern God’s voice by discovering the author’s intended meaning.

     - Put simply, we listen to God by understanding the text.

     - 2 Tim 2.7: Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.
