Series Note

Each Summer to the Max lesson incorporates a special venue into the service. Adding a venue allows the summer schedule to change while keeping the focus on Biblical truth. Venues can be done during the first 30 minutes of service or final 30 minutes of service. If you are also utilizing Summer to the Max Junior lessons, consider keeping one venue at the beginning and one at the end. That will keep costs down by allowing both groups to enjoy the same venue. Each lesson offers multiple venue options at different price points to accommodate your budget. Promoting the venues ahead of time will build excitement for Summer to the Max!

Venue Ideas

Choose one of the following venue options or create your own.

Mega Game Day

Fill the venue with board games, video games, and card games. Invite the kids to play together but keep a humble attitude.

Animal Masks Craft

Have the kids create their own animal masks using craft kits or DIY craft solutions.

Petting Zoo

Hire a petting zoo and let the kids spend some time playing with the animals.

Welcome

Host

Welcome to Summer To The Max! This summer we’re practicing living like followers of Jesus. There’s no better leader than Jesus.

Co-Host

Each week we’re discovering how following Jesus’ lead to changes in the way we live and causes us to see the world differently.

Engage 1

Prior to service, take a picture (or pictures) of a volunteers or staff person using silly filters found on social media apps. Load it on your system so that you can show it during this segment.

Host

Let’s check out today’s Big Point, so we can learn more about what Jesus taught about being His follower.

Co-Host

We need everyone to help us count down from three, and then we’ll read the Big Point.

Host

Let’s all say it together, I Am Humble! That can be a challenging attitude.

Co-Host

Have you ever met someone who did not act humble? Did you like being around that person? It’s difficult, right? Describe some ways that non-humble people speak or act.

Interview a few kids.

Host

We usually think of not humble people as people who brag a lot about themselves or act better than everyone else, but that’s not the only temptation we face.

Co-Host

Some people think of themselves too highly, but others think of themselves as too lowly. Those people speak very negatively about themselves and tend to put themselves down, too.

Host

We all have a way of seeing ourselves, but a person who isn’t humble sees themselves in way that isn’t true. It’s like these pictures we took, using filters. See if you can figure out who is in this picture.

Show the pictures taken prior to the service.

Host

What if a person really thought they looked like that guy/girl did in that picture? Would it change how they acted?

Co-Host

It probably would. How we see ourselves matters. The right way to see yourself, and the only way to look at yourself in humility, is to see yourself the way God sees you.

Host

This means not putting yourself down, but also not placing yourself above everyone else. That is real humility.

Co-Host

When you choose a humble attitude, God is able to entrust you with greater parts in His big plan.

Engage 2Materials: Flag Football Belts, Inflatable Obstacles

Co-Host

Let’s say our Big Point again,

Co-Host

I Am Humble!

Host

Let’s see what Jesus said in the Bible about humility by looking at the Big Verse.

Co-Host

Everyone, count down from three, and then we’ll read the verse.

Host

Matthew 5:5 (NIrV), “Blessed are those who are humble. They will be given the earth.” What Jesus explained in this verse felt like the exact opposite of what people had been told for their whole life. But it’s not just them. People still believe wrong things about humility today.

Co-Host

Let’s demonstrate with a game. It’s a classic game of tag. To make it a little easier, we’re using flag football flags. When both flags have been removed, then you’re out. The last one standing wins.

Host

Let’s see who the ultimate tag winner is.

Optional, play game music. Play the game. Use as many kids as your space allows. Consider setting up obstacles to give kids places to hide and maneuver around.

Co-Host

Let’s give our winner a big hand. Many people believe that the way to get ahead in life is by taking everyone else down and dominating, kind of like what it takes to win a game of tag.

Host

Jesus taught that life is different than a game. Instead of dominating to get ahead, Jesus said that the way to receive God’s best is to be humble. That word can also mean gentle.

Co-Host

Humility is the opposite of violence. Many of the Jewish people in Jesus’ day thought that the only way to win was to be more violent than the bad guys in order to overpower them.

Host

Jesus wanted His followers, and us, to know that God’s way is different. People may not act kindly or justly towards us, but a Christian can still respond with gentle humility. Let’s see how Jesus demonstrated humility.

Big Story

Humble people are also willing to be truthful and believe what God shows them about themselves. If you believe a lie, any lie, about yourself, then you won’t be able to choose humility. Close your eyes and think for a moment about how you see yourself. Do you see yourself as better than others? Do you see yourself as worthless? Or do you see yourself the way God sees you? Take a moment to ask God to help you believe the truth about yourself and use that truth to live with a humble attitude. (Pause) I’ll pray for all of us. (Pray)

Engage 3Materials: Monopoly Game

Co-Host

Can you believe that Jesus knelt down and washed smelly feet? I’m not sure there’d be many of us who would be willing to do that. Jesus did, and He showed us what it means to follow the Big Point. Let’s say the Big Point,

Co-Host

I Am Humble!

Host

That brings us to this week’s Big Do.

Host

Be like Jesus and do a job for someone else that you don’t really want to do. Show humility by serving someone else.

Co-Host

Family game nights are extra fun in the summer because you have more time to play. I used to love to play Monopoly with my family. The goal of this game is to dominate the competition. It is fun, but it’s also the opposite of the attitude Jesus expects us to show.

Host

Think about how you can be gentle this summer instead of trying to push others down to get ahead. Choose humility. Let’s connect in our Small Groups and discuss this summer of new attitude.

Small Group

Gather the kids into Small Groups and discuss the following.

  • Do you think that most kids struggle with thinking too highly or too low of themselves? (Allow for answers) Why is it important to see ourselves the way God sees us? So we don’t mistakenly think we’re better than others or get so down thinking we’re not able to do anything right. God created us and says we’re good creations! We should believe what He says because it’s the truth.

  • Would it have been hard for you to wash the other disciples’ feet? Why? What if you had to wash your friends’ feet at school? How would you feel? Why do you think that Jesus said humble people will receive good things from God? If we’re humble, then we can be trusted with greater parts in God’s big plan. Humility honors God and gives God an opportunity to bless us. It’s an obedient attitude.
