Question of the Day: What candy bar is the hardest for you not to eat?

WelcomeMaterials: Lab Coat (2), Egg (2), Spoon (2), Tarp

Host and Co-host enter.

Host

Welcome to the Lab!

Co-Host grabs the Host’s hand and shakes it as hard as he/she can. This should be really exaggerated and over the top.

Co-Host

Thanks, pal! Wow, this is a real treat to be here with a friend.

Host

Can you give me my arm back while it’s still usable?

Co-Host

Sorry, ol’ buddy, ol’ pal.

Co-Host slaps the Host on the back nearly knocking him/her over.

Host

Your friendship hurts.

Co-Host

Just using the Fruit of the Spirit. That’s right; I am a living example of gentleness. Come here, you big goof.

Co-Host gives the Host a big side hug.

Host

I would hate to see how you’d act if you didn’t like me. I think you might need to rethink your gentleness. Why don’t we play a game that requires these kids to gently, but quickly, perform a relay race.

Co-Host

This is the classic egg and spoon relay race. You will race from one line to the next and back to the start, then repeat two more times. The goal is not to drop your egg, or else the game is over. Whoever makes the most laps without dropping their egg or whichever contestant completes all three trips first wins.

Play the game. You can play with real eggs, hard boiled eggs, or plastic eggs. If using real eggs, be sure to race over a tarp. Instead of making this a relay race, this version just has two competitors racing against each other. It can also be done as a relay.

Host

Let’s give our winner a big hand. Today is all about gentleness. We need to check in at the lab, but first stand up and give someone a gentle handshake.

Engage 1Materials: Lab Coat (2), Giant Marshmallows, Skewers, Butane Torch, Electric S’more Maker, Graham Cracker, Chocolate, Pan

Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host

I think I may have gone a little overboard with the friendliness.

Host

That’s okay. At least you were giving it your best shot. Let’s choose a Lab Assistant to come up and help us reveal the Big Point, so we can understand gentleness better.

Host and Co-Host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-Host

After we count down from three, read the Big Point.

Co-Host

Let’s all say it together, Use Your Power To Help! Power? I think this Big Point was meant for someone like a mayor or president. What kind of power do I have?

Host

We all have power. It doesn’t matter whether you are a kid or an adult. What kind of power do kids have?

Interview a few kids. Give them suggestions such as how we influence friends, our interactions at school (being a bully or tattletale versus a helper), our words, etc.

Co-Host

I never thought about me having power. So the Bible wants us to use that power in a gentle, helpful way?

Host

That’s right, because power used the wrong way can hurt, but used the right way, it can change someone’s life. Let me show you guys what I mean. Who loves S’mores?

Choose a few kids to come up on stage.

Host

I’ll give each of you a skewer and giant marshmallow. Now use this electric s’more maker to roast your marshmallow.

Allow each kid to roast a marshmallow. Consider having an adult volunteer onstage to help them. You can also use the S’more Maker Jr. that uses a special S’more Sterno to heat the marshmallow.

Co-Host

When you roast marshmallows, you need power. Watch this.

Co-Host roasts a marshmallow over a metal pan using a butane torch. Roast it until it lights on fire.

Co-Host

I think I had too much power.

Host

That’s what happens when you use your power the wrong way. You damage other people. Let’s check the other marshmallows.

Show the perfectly roasted marshmallows.

Co-Host

Those look much better.

Host

Gentleness is using the power God has given you to bless others. It’s using what you have to help but doing it in a way that won’t hurt or damage someone. I think you guys can use these graham crackers and chocolate to finish your S’more and enjoy a snack.

Co-Host

I wonder if Slater will use his new power to help. Let’s see.

Engage 2Materials: Lab Coat (2), Water Balloons, Buckets (4), Plastic Tarp

Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host

I can understand why Slater is upset with Skip, but I don’t think he’s handling it the right way.

Host

No, he’s kind of showing the opposite of what we’ve learned about the Fruit of the Spirit in the Big Point,

Host

Use Your Power To Help!

Co-Host

We should choose a Lab Assistant to help us reveal the Big Verse.

Host

It’s a great reminder of how to live the Big Point.

Host and Co-Host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-Host

After we count down from three, we need you to read the verse.

Host

Philippians 4:5 (NIrV), “Let everyone know how gentle you are.” Some people don’t think gentleness is a good thing, but God does.

Co-Host

I would rather go with what God says than what people say. Why do you think it’s important to be gentle?

Interview a few kids.

Host

It is good to let people see you producing the Fruit of the Spirit. Let’s see if we can spot how gentle you guys are in this next game.

Choose two teams of kids and have them remove their shoes and socks before coming on stage. Lay a plastic tarp on the stage, spanning the distance between the buckets.

Co-Host

In this game, you will put a water balloon between your knees and walk from the start line to a bucket on the other end. Once you get to the end, drop the balloon in the bucket. Be gentle, so it doesn’t break. The team who gets the most balloons in the bucket wins.

Host

Go!

Optional, play game music.

Play the game and count the balloons.

Co-Host

Great job to our winners. You were definitely gentle.

Host

I hope you guys will put your gentleness on display for everyone. Let’s take a moment to stand and worship God.

Big Story

Let’s bow our heads and stay quiet at our seats for just a moment. You may have never tried this, but you can actually pray the Bible. That means you can use scriptures in the Bible as part of your prayer. When you pray them over and over, it’s called meditating on God’s Word. It’s a great way to help you get the Bible into your heart. I’m going to bring up our Big Verse again, (VFX: Big Verse Slide) and for the next few moments, let’s quietly use this verse as our prayer to God. Everyone, repeat the verse with me. “Let everyone know how gentle you are,” Philippians 4:5 (NIrV). Now turn it in to a prayer. Say, “God, help me show everyone how gentle I am.” (Repeat the verse several times) That’s something you can do at home. You can pray this week’s Big Verse and believe that God will help you be gentle. Let’s stand and take a moment to praise God.

Engage 3Materials: Lab Coat (2)

Host

Paul used his influence to help Onesimus. Onesimus was a slave. He couldn’t do a lot for Paul in return, but that was okay because Paul wanted to help.

Co-Host

I think Philemon used his power to receive Onesimus back into his house and probably forgave him. I’m sure everyone was amazed when Philemon followed the Big Point,

Co-Host

Use Your Power To Help!

Host

We should check out this week’s Big Do.

Co-Host

The Big Do is blow up a balloon. See how big you or your family member can blow it up without making it pop. Use your breath to make the balloon into a fun toy, but be gentle.

Host

Let’s think about some times when kids have the opportunity to be gentle. We have some potential scenarios that kids might face. We’d like to know what you think.

Interview several kids.

Co-Host

Great ideas. You guys are ready to do the Big Point,

Co-Host

Use Your Power To Help!

Host

Let’s gather in our Small Groups and discuss what we’ve learned.

Small Group

Gather the kids into small groups and discuss the following.

  • How is Jesus gentle towards us? He is all powerful, yet he chose to love us and die on the cross for our sins

  • How can you be gentle towards others in that same way? You can choose to treat your younger siblings with love and kindness, you can forgive people who have mistreated you, etc.
