Materials: Lab Coat (2), Tape Strips
Hosts
  • The Host and Co-Host enter wearing lab coats. The Co-Host has tape over his/her mouth.

Host Why do you have tape over your mouth?

Co-Host shrugs.

Host How will you teach if your mouth is covered up?

Co-Host shrugs.

Host Okay, let’s take that tape off.

  • The Co-Host shakes his/her head. The Host chases the Co-Host around the stage in a fight to take off the tape. As soon as the Host removes a piece of tape, the Co-Host replaces it. This goes on several times. Finally the Co-Host places the last piece of tape on the Host’s mouth. He/She rips it off.

Co-Host I was afraid I would say something silly, so I thought it was safer to keep my mouth taped shut.

Host Are you kidding me? You have a lot to offer during this service. We want you to talk, and I trust that you can do it.

Co-Host Are you sure? Because I have a whole roll of tape, if needed.

Host I’m sure. In fact, today we’re reminding ourselves that everyone can step up and serve God. Stand to your feet and tell someone nearby, “I’m glad you’re here.”

  • Play: Herman and Rusty Act 1

Materials: Lab Coat (2), Mouth Opener (2)
Hosts
  • Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host Skip was not very nice to Sophia and Ethel. He made them feel like they had nothing to offer.

Host Have you ever known the answer to a question in school, but you were too nervous to speak up? What happened?

  • Host and Co-Host interview a couple of kids to hear their story.

Co-Host Speaking up can be a little nerve-wracking. That’s why I had such a big roll of tape. You might worry how the kids will react if you say the wrong thing or if whether an adult will like what you have to say.

Host I think it’s something we all struggle with at one time or another, but let’s see what the Bible says by checking out our Big Point. Let’s choose an assistant to help us reveal it.

  • Host and Co-Host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-Host Press that button, after we count down from three, and then read the Big Point.

Host Let’s all say it together, Use Your Gifts! To do that you have to be okay with stepping up and serving, even when you’re nervous. God used the guy in our Big Story today to speak to a king.

Co-Host Let’s play a little game that challenges you to speak up. You may have played those games where you have to wear a mouth opener and say a phrase. That’s what we’re going to do.

Host We’ve chosen two contestants to say these different phrases. Your adult volunteer will be the team captain. Shout your answers to your captain, and he/she will run up and say it into the microphone. Let’s see how many you can get right in 30 seconds. We’ll let each team have a turn.

  • You can come up with your own phrases or use these ideas:

    • Worship song singer
    • Techy Teacher
    • Green grass gardener
    • Mighty meal maker
    • Preachy pastor
    • Big bear hugger
    • Swell sewing seamstress
    • Peppy preschool pal
    • Loving leader
    • Yummy bread baker
    • Kiddie book writer

Co-Host Those were some silly phrases, but they were also all gifts that we can use as part of God’s Big Plan.

Host Everyone has something to offer, but it only works if you’re willing to step up and use the gifts God has given you. He won’t make you serve, but He will help you serve to the best of your ability. Let’s see if Ethel and Sophia choose to step up.

  • Play: Herman and Rusty Act 2
Materials: Lab Coat (2), Large Jar, Ping Pong Balls
Hosts
Note:

Prior to the Engage or service, hand out the ping pong balls to different kids. Ask them to hold them until you call on them to bring them up on stage.

  • Host and Co-Host enter.

Host Don't you think that Ethel and Sophia have a lot more to offer Herman than Skip?

Co-Host I agree, but they are too afraid to use their scientific gifts. It would be good for them to repeat our Big Point. Let’s do that now,

Co-Host Use Your Gifts!

Host Do you really believe that everyone has a gift to share? Let’s see what the Bible says by checking out the Big Verse.

  • Host and Co-Host choose a kid to volunteer.

Co-Host Hit the button as we count down from three and then read the verse.

Co-Host 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIrV) says, “The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all.”

Host Every follower of Jesus receives the Holy Spirit. He’s the One who gives each of us gifts to share.

Co-Host We need all of these different gifts to complete God’s big plan. Let’s think of some different gifts that we can use.

  • Host and Co-Host interview a few kids.

Host Look at this empty jar. I need all of the fourth-grade boys who have a ping pong ball to bring them up and put them in the jar.

Co-Host It looks better, but we’re going to need more. Let’s have all of the boys who have a ping pong ball come forward.

Host It’s definitely fuller, but let’s get even more people to help. I need all of the girls to bring their ping pong balls and place them in the jar.

Co-Host Wow, we filled the jar up. It took everyone contributing something to do that.

Host God has a big plan, and God doesn’t intend for only one person to make the plan happen or even two or two hundred. We all have a place to serve and a job to complete, but we have to choose to use our gifts. Let’s take a moment to stand and worship God.

You may wonder if you really have a place in God’s big plan. A great place to hear God speak to you is through what you read in the Bible. When you read and mediate on God’s Word, you can hear God’s wisdom. Let’s practice meditating on our Big Verse. The way we meditate is to repeat that verse several times. It helps to get it into your mind. Then you can pray the verse. Let’s repeat it together, and then I’ll demonstrate how to pray the verse. 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIrV), “The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all.” (Repeat 2x) Let’s pray that verse. Jesus, I thank you for giving us the Holy Spirit to help us live out your big plan and help others. Amen.

Hosts
  • Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host I’m glad Ethel and Sophia were there to save the day.

Host Me too. They believed they had something to offer, and they followed the Big Point,

Host Use Your Gifts!

Co-Host Instead of being afraid to speak up, I want to be like Joseph and use my gifts in God’s big plan.

Host You can share what you’ve learned today when you do this week’s Big Do.

Host Talk with your family about someone who could use some encouragement, then go out and encourage that person.

Co-Host Let’s practice today. It’s time for an encouragement scavenger hunt. We’ll give you the description of a person, such as red hair or green shirt and glasses. See if you can find someone in the room that fits that description and say something encouraging like, “God loves you!” or “Don’t give up.”

  • Give the kids a few different descriptions of kids or volunteers to find in the room. Once some of the kids have found the person, move to a different one.

Host Everyone can be involved in God’s big plan to help others. Let’s turn and connect with our small groups and talk about what we’ve learned.

Have you ever been embarrassed to speak up in class, or nervous to start in your sports game? I have been there! We all have gifts and talents that God has given us, and it’s important to step up and use them. Aren’t you thankful we serve a God who wants to use us to show Jesus to the world? Let’s take a moment and worship Him for making us part of His big plan.

Materials:
Materials: Lab Coat, Ball, Bean Bag (3), Bucket or Net
Leader

You guys did a great job worshipping God! It’s now time to break up into your small groups. Go ahead and turn to your small group leaders now.

  • Split into groups

  • Optional: Play Game Music

  • Small Group Leader, Use these two minutes to introduce yourself to your kids and go over the rules you have for your group. This will set the expectation and show the kids clear boundaries, setting your group time up for success. The ball can be used as a tool to signify whose turn it is to respond.

  • Leader enters.

It’s time for Lab Wars! During this segment, each group will battle it out to earn points for their team. For tonight’s battle, I need one person from each group who is really good at this one specific thing…throwing! Small group leaders, send up the kid from your group who can throw with amazing accuracy.

  • Allow them to send up a child

Each of you will have three chances to throw these bean bags at the target. The team who hits the target the most wins!

  • Optional: Play Suspenseful Music

  • Give each team a chance to throw three bean bags at the target. Add suspenseful music to make the competition more dramatic.

Wow, what a nail biter! Each of these kids stepped up and used their talent of throwing to win points for their team! The fact is, we have all been given gifts and talents by God, even our friends in the lab. Let’s tune in to see how God is using their gifts as part of His big plan.

Materials: Lab Coat, Engage 1 Activity

  • Leader enters.

Skip was not very nice to Sophia and Ethel. He made them feel like they had nothing to offer, when in fact, they could have the very answer to solve the problem they are facing in their experiment! Have you ever felt like you had nothing to offer? Maybe you knew God has a big plan, but you weren’t sure if you could do much to help. I think our Big Point might be exactly what you need to hear.

I need a small group to help me count down from three to help reveal our Big Point.

  • Choose a small group to count down.

Use Your Gifts! Even though you may feel like you have nothing to offer, the truth is God has given us all talents and abilities. It’s our job to use them! Let’s turn to our small groups and do an activity to help us think of some talents God has given us.

Small Group Leader
  • Pass the Activity Sheet to each child. Have them draw a picture of themselves. Then have them add an object in their hand, signifying a talent God has given them. If time remains, allow the kids to share the talents they have. Then ask the following question.

How could God use your talent in His big plan?

Leader

Just like Sophia and Ethel are good at math and science, you all have talents, too! Someone, raise your hand and tell me something you are good at?

  • Walk around with a microphone allowing a few kids to answer this question

Wow, we have a talented bunch of kids. When we take those talents and use them to honor God, we follow our Big Point,

Use Your Gifts! Let’s see if Sophia and Ethel will choose to ignore Skip and help Dr. Herman solve the problem.

Sophia and Ethel need to stop listening to Skip. Skip is telling them that if they try to offer help, they will mess everything up, but that is not the truth. The truth is that God has given them amazing abilities in both math and science! I hope they choose to follow our Big Point. Let’s say it all together,

Use Your Gifts! I have a fun game that will help us practice our Big Point. We are going to try to solve a problem of our own. You see, Skip has taken all the Little Debbie cakes and locked them up! Your small group is going to solve problems that use different skills in order to unlock the safe. Let’s turn to our small groups and play now!

Small Group Leader
  • There are three Activity Sheets that use three different skills: math, spelling, and problem solving. Begin by asking which kids are strong in each area. When they complete the activity, the answer revealed will be a number. Combine the numbers to “unlock” the safe. If your small group succeeds, pass out the Little Debbie cakes for everyone to enjoy!

Leader

Little Debbie cakes for everyone! I am so impressed. Each person chipped in and used their gifts to help solve the problem, and now we all get to enjoy the blessing! It reminds me of our Big Verse, let’s check it out. I need a small group to help me count it down from three. Ready,

1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIrV) says, “The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all.” When we follow our Big Point and use our gifts, everyone gets to enjoy the blessing! Today it was for Little Debbie cakes, but God wants to use us in much bigger ways than that. It reminds me of a guy in the Bible named Joseph. He used his gifts and God used him in amazing ways. Let’s check out his story.

Materials: Lab Coat, Ball
Leader
  • Optional: Play Soft Instrumental Song

As much as I tell you that God has given you amazing talents and gifts, you may still wonder if you really have a place in God’s big plan. We have all felt that way, but I believe as you continue to think about and say our Big Point, you will grow to understand how God’s big plan includes you. Let’s turn to our small groups and talk more about this.

Small Group Leader
Note:

The goal in this segment is to create a place where kids can openly share and to bring accountability to becoming more like Jesus. Do this by truly listening, responding with love, and showing them what it looks like to be a friend and follower of Jesus. The ball can be used as a tool to signify whose turn it is to respond.

  • Have you ever felt like you have nothing to offer?

  • Why was it important for Joseph to speak up and use his gifts? (Because when he did, he ended up saving an entire nation during a famine!)

  • What might happen if you don’t use the gifts God has given to you? (You may miss out on being a part of something really special, you may miss out on helping people, sharing Jesus with people, etc.)

  • What would you say to a friend who felt like they didn’t have any gifts?

Let’s take a moment and meditate on our Big Verse. We can do that by repeating it together a few times. When we do this, the verse starts to get into our minds and hearts. (Repeat the verse a few times and then pray it over your group). 1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIrV), “The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all.”

Leader

God’s plan is so big, and He has a special part for you to play in it. As you follow our Big Point, get ready to see God use you in amazing ways. Remember,

Use Your Gifts! Let’s check back in at the Lab. Maybe Sophia and Ethel will realize that using their gifts will help.

  • Use this time to hand out any positive reinforcement tools (ie. Candy, stickers, prize coupons, etc.) Tell your group how much you enjoyed spending time with them this week. Finally, end your time together with a prayer and maybe even a group cheer.
