Large Group Instructions
Host
Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I’m so glad that you came to visit.
Co-Host
We’ve had so much fun learning about a special Helper, the One God tells us about in the Bible. Do you remember who our Helper is? Our Helper is the Holy Spirit.
Host
Today we will discover another way the Holy Spirit helps us. But first I think we should play a silly game. It’s freeze dance, but we’re going to make it a silly freeze dance.
Co-Host
Everyone, find a friend beside you and link arms like this. (Link arms with the Host) When we play the music, you get to dance! But the challenge is to keep your arms locked together the whole time.
Host
Let’s see if you can do it.
Play some fun dancing music. Play several rounds of freeze dance, stopping and starting the music at different times. Encourage the kids to stay connected the entire time.
Co-Host
That was silly and fun. It was hard to keep our arms stuck together. Do you think our helper, the Holy Spirit, ever tumbles away from us?
Host
Nope, the Holy Spirit is with all of Jesus’ friends all the time. That’s how we know He will help us every day. If you’re ready to learn more about our Helper, say “Choo-choo!”
Host and Co-Host enter.
Host
Lionel seems upset about losing his pillow.
Co-Host
Now he doesn’t want to sleepover at his grandparents’ house. Sleepovers at Grandma and Grandpa’s house are so much fun.
Host
Let’s think of some of the fun things that we do when we sleepover with our grandparents.
Allow the kids to suggest different activities that can be done at their grandparents house. If possible, act them out with the group.
Co-Host
A sleepover sounds like so much fun. We have to help Lionel feel better even if he doesn’t find his pillow.
Host
I have an idea! Let’s practice the Big Point again and see if it will help him,
Host
The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter!
Co-Host
That means that the Holy Spirit can help us feel calm, peaceful, and not worried, even when things around us feel scary.
Host
Let’s look at some things that kids use to feel safe and comforted.
Show the pictures and ask the kids in what situation would a kid use the item and talk about why it makes you feel comforted.
Host
Those things can all break or be lost, like Lionel’s pillow. But we heard already that the Holy Spirit is always with us. We can never lose Him.
Co-Host
That’s why the Holy Spirit is the best comforter. We should definitely share that with Lionel.
Host and Co-Host enter. This Engage uses a tabletop Bed of Nails science experiment that can be purchased online. If that is not available, you can make one easily, using instructions found online. Example videos are also available online.
Host
Engineer Kelly and Lionel went on a big adventure, but did they find his pillow? (Pause) No. I wish he knew the Big Point. Let’s practice it again,
Host
The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter!
Co-Host
Conductor Carl shared a great verse from the Bible with Engineer Kelly about the Holy Spirit.
Co-Host
Acts 9:31 (NIrV) says, “The Holy Spirit helped them.” That verse is talking about the people who followed Jesus.
Host
Many people were mean to Jesus’ friends and followers. That could have made them so sad and scared, but the Holy Spirit helped them.
Co-Host
So, the Holy Spirit can comfort us, even when bad things happen.
Host
This reminds me of a science experiment that Professor Beaker made. Look! What are these? (Show the Bed of Nails) That’s right; they are nails. Is there a lot of nails or just a few? (Pause) There are a lot of pointy nails on this. Pretend to touch the point of a nail and say, “Ouch!”
Co-Host
If you touch a balloon to a pointy nail, what will happen? It will pop. Everyone, shout, “Pop!” Let’s see what happens when we place a balloon on these nails and push down.
Place the balloon on the nails and push down with the wooden top. The balloon will squish, but not pop.
Host
The balloon didn’t pop, even though it touched pointy nails. When bad things happen all around us, the Holy Spirit is there to comfort us. He helps us feel calm and peaceful, so we don’t pop.
Use a nail to pop the balloon.
Co-Host
In our Big Story, we’re going to hear about a young man whom the Holy Spirit comforted when something really scary happened. But first let’s stand and worship God.
Play optional soft instrumental music
Let’s bow our heads and close our eyes. Think of the last time you felt worried or alone. That was scary, I’m sure. We learned today that we aren’t alone when we follow Jesus. Let’s pray and thank Jesus for sending us the Helper. “Dear God, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to comfort us. We are thankful that He helps us when we feel sad, lonely, or afraid. We are glad that we have a Helper. Amen.”
Host enters.
Host
I’m so glad that Lionel decided to go, even though he didn’t find his pillow. He learned that our Big Point is true. Let’s practice our Big Point,
Host
The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter!
Co-Host
Stephen’s story from the Bible reminded us of how much the Holy Spirit helps us. You can tell your family Stephen’s story when you do the Big Do.
Host
Here’s what it is: build a pillow fort with your family and then talk about how the Holy Spirit comforts us. Let’s see if we can build a fort with boxes and blankets. We have chosen a few friends to help us on stage. Everyone else can help us decide where to place the boxes and blankets.
Use boxes, pillows, blankets, etc. to build a fort on stage. Have some kids help you arrange them on stage as the rest of the kids shout suggestions on what shape to make the fort. If time/space permits, consider having the kids break into groups and build multiple forts.
Co-Host
That was so much fun, I’m sure you will make a great fort with your family.
Host
Let’s say our Big Point once more.
Host
The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter!
Let’s practice our Big Point again. Hmm, did our Big Point say The Holy Spirit Makes Us Scared or The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter?
Let’s pretend to squeeze a snuggly teddy bear. (Pretend to hug it) Do you have a favorite stuffed animal or blanket? (Allow the kids to share about it) What did Lionel lose today? Pillow How did that make him feel? Worried
I’ll choose one of you to help me stand up. When I pick you, walk over and grab my hand to pull me up. (Choose kids to help you stand up from a sitting position as you use your other hand to push yourself up) What does our Big Verse say? Acts 9:31 (NIrV), “The Holy Spirit (hurt/helped) them.”
Pretend to lift a big, heavy rock. Who was hit by big rocks in our story? Stephen Was Stephen a kind helper to other people? Yes Who helped Stephen stay calm during this scary moment? Holy Spirit Can the Holy Spirit help you stay calm when you are scared? Yes
What did Conductor Carl share with us to do in the Big Do? Build a pillow fort and talk about how the Holy Spirit comforts you
