Countdown From 10

Optional Music For Lesson:

  • Soft instrumental music for Big Story
Rules
WelcomeMaterials: PROPS: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Old-Fashioned Pajamas, Trick Blindfold

Host enters.

Host Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! I wonder where our friend, (Co-Host), is.

The Co-Host enters wearing old-fashioned pajamas (think Ebenezer Scrooge) over his/her overalls. The Co-Host also wears a trick blindfold that makes it seem as if he/she can’t see, but in reality, he/she can. If you don’t have one, simply omit this prop. The Co-Host sleepwalks, bumping around the stage.

Host (Co-Host), are you okay? Why do you think our friend isn’t answering? What kind of clothes does he/she have on? (Pause) That’s right; they look like pajamas. Do you wear pajamas when you go out to eat at a restaurant? No. When do you wear them? (Pause) Yes, you wear them when you go to sleep. That means our friend must be…asleep. We need his/her help. Let’s quietly whisper, “Wake up.”

The Co-Host still bounces around the stage while making snoring sounds.

Host Jr. Conductors, that didn’t work. Let’s say it louder. Wake up! (Pause) He/She is still asleep. I think we need to say it really loudly. WAKE UP!

The Co-Host wakes up.

Co-Host Where am I? Hey, how did all of you fit inside my bedroom?

Host We’re not in your bedroom. You sleepwalked all the way to the Train Station!

Co-Host I was having a dream that was so interesting I didn’t want to wake up.

Host I’m glad you’re awake. Today we’re going to hear about someone in the Bible who had an important dream. Since we’re all awake, everyone, stand up and say a big, “Choo-choo!”

Engage 1Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host It sounds like we’re going to meet even more people at the Train Station who had dreams. Engineer Kelly had one, too.

Host Her dream was about helping people. She thought that was silly, but our Big Point reminds us that we can believe the things God says. Let’s practice our Big Point again,

Host Believe What God Says!

Host God has a big plan to help people, and He wants you to be His big helper. Everyone, point to yourself and say, “Me?” (Pause) Yep, He wants you.

Co-Host How do we know if God says it or not?

Host One important way to know if God is speaking is to match what you hear with what you read in the Bible.

Co-Host What if I thought God told me to take everyone’s toys without asking, so I can have the most toys? Let’s scowl, like this, and pretend to snatch a toy. Laugh like a bad guy. Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Host The Bible says not to steal, so taking toys isn’t something God would say.

Co-Host What if I thought God told me to pray for my grandma who was sick with the flu? Pretend to cough. (Pause) Feel your forehead, like your mom does when you’re sick. Is it really hot? We must have a fever. Should we wipe our faces with hot towels or cool rags? (Pause) Cool rags. Pretend to wipe your face.

Host The Bible tells us to pray for others, especially when they’re sick. So that is something God would say.

Co-Host What if I thought God told me to use mean and unkind words when I talk to my mommy or daddy? Let’s growl like we’re angry and say, “No! Go away!”

Host Oh my, would that be a good choice? No. The Bible tells us to respect and listen to our parents, so God wouldn’t tell us to say mean words to them in a disrespectful way. I’m glad the Bible helps us learn what God says so we can believe it. Let’s see what Engineer Kelly discovers next.

Engage 2Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Helium Balloon (2), String

Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host (Yawns) I think I’m still a little tired. Can you stretch your arms out and yawn, Jr. Conductors? Maybe I’ll have a fun dream about God’s plan, like Joseph did.

Host You might, but whether we have a dream or read something in the Bible, we want to be sure to follow the Big Point. Let’s practice singing the Big Point again,

Host Believe What God Says!

Co-Host I’m not sure, though, that I understand the verse Conductor Carl shared. We should probably read it again.

Co-Host Isaiah 55:9 (NIrV) says, “My thoughts are higher than your thoughts.” Whose thoughts are higher?

Host God’s thoughts are higher. God knows a lot more than we do, and He can think of more important things than we do. Let’s look at some different pictures, and you tell me if the animal can think bigger thoughts than you or me.

With each picture ask the kids to name the animal, mimic its sound, and discuss some things it can do. Then discuss what it can’t do (that we can do), such as talk, read, play certain sports, go to church, etc.

Co-Host I guess we can think and do lots of things animals can’t do.

Host That’s right. We can think about lots of things.

Show one helium balloon, anchored by a weight, so that it is about as tall as a person.

Host But God, He can think of so much more. He created the world. God is the strongest and smartest of all. That’s why it’s a good idea to listen to Him. His thoughts are higher.

Show another helium balloon, anchored by a weight, which reaches much higher, possibly up to the ceiling.

Co-Host That second balloon is much higher. I can’t wait to hear about the dream God gave to Joseph, but before we head to the Big Story Station, let’s stand and sing a song to worship God.

Big Story

Optional: Play soft instrumental music

I’m glad that God has a big plan to help our world and that God wants us to be part of that plan. Each one of you can be God’s big helper if you say, “Yes,” like Joseph. Let’s take a moment to quietly think about God and His big plans for us. Let’s close our eyes and tell God, “Thank You” for sharing good things with us and that we will believe and do what He says. (Pause) I’ll pray for all of us now. “Dear Jesus, thank You having a big plan for us. We’re glad that Your plans are good and that we can be Your big helper. Amen.”

Engage 3Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

Host and Co-Host enter.

Co-Host Engineer Kelly believed God, and now she’s helping lots of people.

Host I’m proud of her for believing that the Big Point is true. Let’s all practice our Big Point again,

Host Believe What God Says!

Co-Host I’m surprised that God asked Joseph to be the leader of his family, even though he was young. It reminds me that God has a place for all of us to help in His big plan.

Host We can talk with our family about God’s plan when we do the Big Do this week. Conductor Carl gave us a fun idea.

Host Share something true with your family. Think of anything that is true and talk about it.

Co-Host I have a fun idea. Let’s see if the Jr. Conductors can tell if something we say is true or not true.

Use simple true or false statements such as the ocean is blue, the sky has pink polka dots, lions bark, fish fly, frogs are green, etc.

Co-Host They did a great job. I think you are ready to believe true things.

Host We know that God only says what is true. Let’s say our Big Point once more,

Host Believe What God Says!
