God Wants Me In His Family!

God wants us to be a part of His family, just like Jesus has His own family. Through engaging activities and storytelling, children will discover how Jesus’ birth at Christmas made it possible for everyone to become children of God. The lesson concludes with a reminder that being in God’s family means He loves us and invites us to talk to Him, worship Him, and be His helpers.

Host

Welcome to the Train Station, Jr. Conductors! Are you excited for the big holiday that’s coming soon?

Co-Host

I am! I can’t wait to celebrate my birthday.

Host

Your birthday isn’t this month.

Co-Host

Are you sure? I know we’re celebrating a special birthday on December 25. It’s not mine?

Host

Nope, it’s not your birthday. Whose birthday do we celebrate at Christmas? (Pause) Jesus! He was born at Christmas. Today we get to learn why that is good news for everyone.

Co-Host

Usually we celebrate our birthdays with our family. Let’s play a matching game and see if we can match the faces of different family members like grandparents, cousins, and more.

Play the PowerPoint matching game. With each match, ask the kids questions about their family, like what they call their grandparents, aunts/uncles, or others. If you aren’t able to run the PowerPoint, then print off the activity page and play a matching game with the included cards.

Host

We can learn a lot about God’s family from the first Christmas. Let’s listen closely and find out.

Co-Host

I can’t wait. But first, let’s say, “Choo-choo!”

Engage 1Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2), Paper or Butcher Paper

Host and Co-Host enter. Prior to the Engage, fold the paper multiple times and draw a simple person shape on the first page. Cut out that shape and keep the paper person chain together, to be revealed at the end. This is the classic paper chain of people, but if you have a larger room, use a roll of craft or butcher paper to create a giant-sized chain.

Host

Did Mr. Rios seem sad? Why?

Co-Host

You’re right. He was sad because his family couldn’t visit for Christmas. Do any of you travel to visit family at Christmas?

Host

Does anyone have to travel a long way to visit your grandparents or cousins? Let’s pretend that we’re airplanes, flying high up in the sky. Stand up and hold out your arms, like wings.

Pretend to fly. Make airplane sounds and “fly” high and low.

Co-Host

I think our Big Point might help Mr. Rios. Let’s practice it together,

Host

God Wants Me In His Family!

Co-Host

Did you know that God has a family? We know that Jesus is God’s Son, but who else is in the family?

Host

God’s family is big because everyone who’s ever believed in Jesus and follows Jesus as their leader is part of God’s family.

Co-Host

God must have a giant Christmas list with that many people. Jesus came at Christmas to invite us to become part of His family.

Host

God wants all of us to be in His family. It’s only possible because of Jesus. That’s why Christmas is such good news.

Co-Host

So that means that Mr. Rios isn’t alone this Christmas because Conductor Carl, Engineer Kelly, and Engineer Courtney are in God’s family with him. That means we’re not alone either.

Host

The next time you feel all by yourself (Show the folded paper chain), remember that’s not the truth. God is with you, and you have lots of other people who are part of the family of God and love you, too.

The Host and Co-Host reveal the paper chain of people. You may need some additional volunteers to help support the middle portions of the chain.

Co-Host

That’s a big family. Let’s see if Conductor Carl and his friends can share that with Mr. Rios.

Engage 2Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

Host and Co-Host enter.

Host

I love that Engineer Kelly and Engineer Courtney are learning about Mexico. That’s the country that Mr. Rios is from. I’m sure they’ll find lots of ways to help Mr. Rios this Christmas. Let’s practice the Big Point again,

Host

God Wants Me In His Family!

Co-Host

Inspector Nigel shared an important Big Verse.

Co-Host

John 1:12 (NIrV) says, “He gave them the right to become children of God.” Because Jesus came to help us at Christmas, we can become God’s children.

Host

That means if we follow and believe in Jesus, God is our Father. He’s such a loving Father.

Co-Host

Let’s think of some things that we do with our families and why we like them so much.

Show the slides and have the kids act out the different scenarios. Then talk about why each thing is fun and helpful. Explain why God is the perfect example of how to love us.

Bed: Pretend to take a nap. Talk about how fun it is to snuggle with our parents when it’s time to go to sleep. Explain how God makes us feel safe and comforted no matter where we are.

Food: Pretend to eat dinner and share funny foods that you eat. Talk about how it’s fun to tell our family about our day and share funny stories when we sit to eat. Explain how God likes to listen to us, too. He enjoys talking with us anytime.

Games: Pretend to play a game with the group (like Duck, Duck, Goose). Talk about the fun we have when we play games with our family. Explain how God created fun, and that He wants us to enjoy fun things that are safe and good for us.

Band-aid: Pretend to hurt your knee or elbow. Talk about how our family takes care of us when we get hurt. Explain that God cares when we get hurt and how God can heal us and help us feel happy when something sad happens.

Host

God is the best Father. I’m thankful that God loves us so much.

Co-Host

It’s fun to know that we have such a big family. Not only do we have our mommy, daddy, grandparents, and brother or sisters, but we also have each other in God’s family.

Host

In just a moment we’ll visit the Big Story Station and hear how Jesus had a family, too, when He came to earth at Christmas.

Co-Host

First let’s stand and worship God!

Big Story

Let’s take a moment to thank God for inviting us to be part of His family. Close your eyes and bow your heads. Talk quietly to God and tell Him “Thank You” for giving us such a great family because of Jesus. Do that now. (Pause) You did great. Now I’ll pray, too, and thank God for the good news we hear at Christmas. (Pray)

Engage 3Materials: Overalls (2), Train Hat (2), Handkerchief (2)

Host and Co-Host enter.

Host

Mr. Rios is having so much fun celebrating Christmas. He learned that even when his family couldn’t come for Christmas, he could still enjoy time with God’s family. Let’s practice our Big Point,

Host

God Wants Me In His Family!

Co-Host

You can tell your family all about Mr. Rios and how Jesus came to invite us to God’s family when you do the Big Do this week.

Host

This week’s Big Do is to create a picture of your family at Christmas. Draw the fun things you do and the yummy food you eat during the holidays.

Co-Host

One thing I love to do with my family is sing Christmas songs. Would you like to sing a fun Christmas song with us?

Host

Stand up, and let’s sing together.

Sing a few fun, simple Christmas songs. Try to find some with motions. You can sing them acapella or with music track or videos.

Co-Host

That was a lot of fun.

Host

Have fun with the Big Do and don’t forget our Big Point,

Host
