Large Group Full Program Instructions
The following music selections are suggested. “Heavy Action” by Johnny Pearson
Host and Co-host enter. Co-host is dressed as a football.
Host Welcome to the Lab! I hope you are ready for a big day. It’s time for…
(Play "Heavy Action" music)
Co-Host Super Bowl Sunday!
(Co-Host runs across the stage and “spikes” himself/herself as if he were a football being spiked by a player. Then, he/she gets up and dances.)
Host What was that?
Co-Host My touchdown celebration. I’ve been practicing it all day. I don’t know why, but my head has been pounding today.
Host Maybe you should leave the touchdown celebrations to the pros.
Co-Host Great idea. Where am I?
Host I think we may need the injury tent. While I help our friend, stand up and tell your neighbor if you think the Kansas City Chiefs or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will win tonight. Then let’s check in with Herman and see how the Super Bowl preparations are going.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host Who do you think is going to win tonight?
Host Oh, I know who will win.
Co-Host How do you already know?
Host I know that the winner of the big game will be the guys who play best as a team.
Co-Host Isn’t it all about the quarterback? He is the star of the game.
Host The quarterback is important, but every player on that team helps get the win. That’s the point of today’s Big Point. Let’s choose an assistant to help us reveal it.
(Host and Co-Host choose a kid to volunteer.)
Co-Host Help us count down from three, and then read the Big Point. 3…2…1!
Co-Host Let’s all say it together, I’m Part of God’s Team! Ok, alright, there’s no way I’m more important than someone like Pastor (Pastor's name). He’s the pastor of the church. He’s a way bigger deal than I am.
Host Let’s test that thought with a game. We’re going to choose two teams. The goal is to pop all the balloons of the same color. These are the colors of the teams playing tonight.
Co-Host Who’s gonna be on these teams?
Host You can choose eight kids to be on Team One. I’ll choose one adult volunteer. He/She is Team Two. Who do you think is going to win?
Co-Host (To the adult volunteer) It’s been nice knowing you.
(Play the game.)
Co-Host The kids blew him/her away.
Host That’s because it was one person versus a team. When they all worked together, it wasn’t hard for them to beat one adult…but it took them all.
Co-Host So you’re saying that every person in here who follows God is important in His big plan. That’s exciting. Let’s check out this classic Super Bowl episode of the Herman and Rusty Show.
Host and Co-Host enter.
Host Which of Herman and Rusty’s Top 5 was your favorite?
Co-Host I love the Halftime Show. Aha! I found something about the game that doesn’t fit with a team. The Halftime Show is all about the main singer.
Host Wrong again. It takes between 2,000-3,000 people just to pull off one Super Bowl Halftime Show. That’s a big team, but not nearly as big as God’s team. Remember our Big Point,
Host I Am Part of God’s Team! Let’s choose an assistant to help us discover where in the Bible we find that truth.
(Host and Co-Host choose a kid to volunteer.)
Co-Host Count us down from three, and then you’ll read the verse. 3, 2, 1!
(Allow the child to read the Big Verse:)
1 Corinthians 3:9 (NIrV), “We work together to serve God.”
Co-Host How do we all work together to serve God?
Host Let’s use a football team as an example. I’m going to bring up a volunteer to represent one of the positions on a football team. We’re going to see if you guys know what each person does.
(Choose different kids to represent different players.)
(Show the pictures of well-know players who play that position. Feel free to change the pictures to current players in this year’s Super Bowl.)
Co-Host Each of those positions work together to score or to keep the other team from scoring.
Host Yes, and it’s that way with Jesus’ followers. Let’s show some of the different kinds of jobs we can do as Christians and think about how they help God’s big plan.
(Give each kid on stage a different position such as pastor, greeter, usher, missionary, worship leader, nursery volunteer, camera operator, golf cart driver, etc.)
Co-Host Each of those jobs serve God, so that makes them all important positions on God’s team.
(Dismiss the kids.)
Host Yep, any job that God gives us is important in carrying out His big plan. That’s why we need all of you to join the team and serve. There are different ways to serve like volunteering for an outreach like grocery giveaway, helping an older neighbor with a tough job, praying for missionaries in other countries.
Co-Host Don’t forget that we can give, too. The Big Point reminds me that anyone can make a difference on God’s team. Let’s stand up and worship the captain of our team, Jesus.
You may not be sure of what part you play on God’s team. That’s okay. There are all kinds of cool jobs on God’s team. Some people teach people about God, some people are great at giving. Others are amazing at listening and comforting people. The list goes on and on. No matter who you are you have a place on this team. One job isn’t better than another. They’re all important to God, just like a football team has all kinds of important positions. God has a place for you. Let’s take a moment to chat with God. As you chat with God ask Him to help you find the perfect part on His team. Listen to God, and trust that He will let you know exactly what part you play on the team. Then do it with all your heart. (Pause) I want to take a moment to pray for everyone, too. (Pray)
Host and Co-Host enter.
Co-Host Those five friends in the Big Story were a true team.
Host When one of their friends was down and out, the others picked him up. That’s what Christians do for each other. We work together to serve God, and we build each other up. It’s way better to work as a team. Remember the Big Point,
Host I Am Part Of God’s Team!
Co-Host (To the kids) What if you aren’t in the spotlight? What if you aren’t the one who is up teaching people about Jesus or leading the worship? What is another way you can do your part on God’s team?
(Allow kids to answer.)
Host You’re right. We can pray for our teammates. We can look for ways to assist them. One of the best things you can do is cheer them on. That’s what we’re going to do in this game.
Co-Host It’s called Impossible Shot! We’re going to have an adult volunteer move throughout the audience holding a hula hoop. We will choose two teams of kids who will try to throw a football through the hoop.
Host Even though you aren’t up here throwing, it’s your job to cheer them on. You are all part of the team!
Co-Host Go!
Play the game. If time permits, play multiple rounds.
Co-Host Great job! That game was so much more fun when everyone worked together. How many of you plan to cheer on a team tonight as you watch the big game?
Host Never forget that we are all a team. We all work together to serve God. Let’s say our Big Point again,
Host I Am Part of God’s Team!
Co-Host And don't forget about this week's Big Do!
Host Gather with your family and decide on a task to do together as a team.
Co-Host That's a fun one!
Host Yes it is. Now let’s gather with our small groups and discuss what we learned today.
Gather the kids into small groups and discuss the following.
- How did the guys in our Big Story act as a team?
- What might have happened had one of the friends decided it wasn’t worth helping the one who was sick?
- Did it surprise you to learn that you are just as important to God’s team as the person who speaks on stage? Did any of you feel like God spoke to you about what your part on His team might be? How can you be part of God’s team at school? At home?
